Can someone on the list tell me if copies of original marriage licenses (from 1877) can be obtained from IRAD or Belleville Court? I received copies of the Marriage Register from IRAD which has a license # listed. 1877 is a transition period for vital record in St. Clair County. That December Births and Deaths were just beginning to be officially recorded at the courthouse and are few and far between. Marriage registers begin to take on a new look too [1878] and reflect questions asked on the application and license. The courthouse may have the license for 1877 but ordinarily do not for any before 1878. They forwarded all of the paper licenses through the 1976 to IRAD many years ago. IRAD's cost is super cheap compared to the courthouse fee of $10.00 If you specifically asked IRAD for the marriage license in your original request, and, they specifically replied the register was all they had, you may be out of luck. Write IRAD again and tell them you need a copy of the actual paper license from Accession group/record group 6/0008/01, not the index.
