    1. new queries posted to St. Clair web site
    2. Diane Walsh
    3. Folks, Some new queries have been posted to the St Clair Gen Web Project web site http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilstclai/queries4.htm Please send YOUR query to me for posting PUT POST ST CLAIR QUERY in the Subject line of your e-mail. The good thing about putting queries directly on a web page is web crawlers will index the query making it easier to find. I suppose there is a downside to this as well but have not heard any complaints. ALSO, keep in mind no one will be able to contact you unless you allow their e-mail to get through (EARTHLINK for one seems to have a security/spam block up). I do not know if there is a work-around, and not all responders will want to visit a web link to ask to be put on your approved list.... Diane StClairCoord@compu-type.net

    1. Charles Sargent of Belleville/Lebanon, Illinois
    2. Berlin
    3. I am looking for information concerning Charles SARGENT and his wife Sarah Smith. Charles was born May 27, 1792 in Massachusetts. He married Sarah Smith, daughter of Samuel Smith, in 1820. I am looking for information where they were married, Massachusetts or Illinois. He was the ovner of several business in Belleville and Lebanon, Illinois. We have a share of stock that he purchased in the St. Clair Turnpike Company. He died September 12, 1848 and is buried in Lebanon, Illinois A family rumor is he died as a result of a lost leg in either the Battle of New Orleans or the Mexican American War. He and Sarah had six children, two of whom died in infancy. Sarah married Matthew Potter after Charles death. Sarah died December 26, 1858. Charles and Sarah's oldest son, Henry, was the executor of his will, and my husband's greatgreat grandfather. We were wondering if anyone can confirm the answer to #1 & 5. Also when Henry moved to Marshall County, Illinois, did he bring his mother with him. We have visited the cemetary in Lebanon and found Charles and Jane's, their oldest childs, graves, but we couldn't find one for Sarah Potter. Any information on Charles, Sarah and their other children would be appreciated. Berlin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! 1. Re: Liquor License
    2. rbmc
    3. You may try checking out the Illinois Archives. Start with this: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/databases.html Also on this page, don't forget to check out the Illinois Vital Records search links for marriages & deaths. (and, use spelling variations!!) Right below that, is "Records in IRAD" (Illinois Regional Archives Depository) Click "Local Govt Records in IRAD". Another new page, click on the left side, "Record Descriptions". On this page, you will see that "County Clerks" MAY have Liquor License info. At the BOTTOM of this page, click the IRAD Research Policy link. You will need to find which district you want to contact. Nice, that they will look, and you can receive documents, for free. But, don't be in a hurry........as it can take maybe 2 or 3 months before you hear from them. (quite busy, and done by volunteers). But, worth the effort to obtain information. (MAYBE) Hope this helps find some Illinois data. Richard

    1. Need help with look up in St. Augustine Cemetery
    2. Hoping someone will be able to help me. I am trying to locate information on my great grandfather, Harry McDermott's parents and siblings. His obituary (below), says he came to Jerseyville (Jersey County) as a young child. I know one sister, Katie McDermott Caton, was married in St, Clair. From Harry's obituary I know one sister and one brother were living in St. Clair in 1928 - "Mrs. W.A. Caton of East St. Louis" and "Will McDermott of East St. Louis" Harry McDermott's marriage application says his father was Frank. Mother was not listed. I have not been able to find them on the 1880 census. The St Clair site shows there is a least one McDermott listed in St. Augustine Cemetery. I am hoping someone could look it up and send me the information. MC DERMOTT St. Augustine - St. Augustine Cath. * SW1/4 SE1/4 31 Prairie du Long Cemetery V 6: 4 p. 194 My great grandfathers obituary: Alton Evening Telegraph Alton, IL Tuesday August 14, 1928 Harry McDermott Funeral Set For Wednesday, 2p.m. Burial to be in Oakwood Former Member of Fire Department Funeral services for Harry McDermott will be held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’ clock (above says 2 p.m.) at the Streeper funeral home and burial will be in Oakwood cemetery. Services will be conducted by the Rev. N.C. Henderson, pastor of Main Street Methodist Church. McDermott died at 11 o’clock Monday morning. He had been in a poor state of health a long time but the fatal attack came upon him last Thursday. Up to that time he had been up and about. Sunday morning Mr. McDermott felt much better and he remarked to his wife that he did not think it necessary to have the doctor any more for a while. However, late in the day he became much worse and several physicians were called. Harry McDermott came to Alton about 35 years ago from Jerseyville where he had spent his boyhood. He was born in Vicksburg, Miss., but had gone to Jerseyville when young with his parents. When a young man he took a job with the C & A railroad at Jerseyville and the work brought him to Alton much of the time, so he located here. He was married 32 years ago to Miss Hattie Dailey who survives him. He leaves also one son, Glenn McDermott, of Upper Alton. Between 25 and 30 years ago when-Upper Alton was a separate corporation he served two years as village marshal. In later years after Upper Alton became part of the city of Alton, McDermott held a place in the fire department several years. It was is a collision of a fire truck with a Chicago & Alton passenger train at the ninth street crossing that Harry McDermott was hurt. He had a hip fracture, a severe scalp wound inflicted and he was bruised and otherwise badly hurt. It was said that McDermott was lying on the track between the tender of the engine and the baggage car when the train stopped. He was in the hospital many weeks following the accident. McDermott was an amateur baseball player of note in his younger days. There are several of the old time ball players of Upper Alton who recall many a game they played with McDermott catching. Besides his wife and son he is survived by two brothers, Thomas of Kansas City, and Will McDermott of East St. Louis; and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Ford of Dennison, Texas and Mrs. W.A. Caton of East St. Louis. A number of relatives were expected to arrive in Alton today or tomorrow morning to attend the funeral. Thanks for your help, Kathleen McDermott Mirabella

    1. Parking Innovation at St. Louis Public Library
    2. Smith, Kathleen
    3. Woo-Hoo, Folks, We now have free parking during the week! (Remember, parking is free at the meters all day on Saturdays). Here's how it works. The number of spaces is fairly limited - hopefully, if it is a big success, more spaces will be made available. The spaces are in the large parking lot on the corner of 15th & Olive. If you have a handicapped sticker or tag, use spaces numbered 58-60. The other spaces are numbered 32-44 in the center section of the parking lot. Once you have parked your car, stop at the issue desk (just inside each entrance - where you would check out books), and you will be given a parking slip. When you are ready to leave the library, you will turn your parking slip in for a token to exit the parking lot. The slip/token system was arranged to prevent misuse of the spaces by people paying parking tickets or doing other business in the area. If you get into the lot and can't find a designated space, park somewhere else and go into the Central-West building right next to the parking lot. There is a guard just inside the door to resolve the problem. Signs will be put up presently. So come down, park for free in a closed lot, and enjoy our outstanding services, staff <g>, and collections. Please call us at (314)539-0385 if you have any questions. Sincerely, Kathy Smith Librarian, History & Genealogy St. Louis Public Library
