    3. I didn't find the name of the church, but I found an article in the Edwardsville Intelligencer that mentioned Reverend Joseph Kardos, Hungarian Presbyterian minister in E. St. Louis. But now at least you know his first name, and you know that the church was Presbyterian. Here is the relevant paragraph: February 10, 1921: ... Rev. Elliott in his talk told how Rev. Joseph Kardos, Hungarian Presbyterian minister, single handed saved his church from the rioters who were destroying property in the race riot in East St. Louis two years ago. My relative's obit reads that the funeral will leave the home on Piggott Ave and proceed to the Hungarian Church at 11th and Trendley with Rev. Kardos officiating. The Belleville Diocese does not have a church listed at list address in their archives and does not recognize the name Rev Kardos. Perhaps, this was not a Catholic Church. 1. Land Description and Location
    2. The following is from another List: ================= Ancestry Quick Tip Help with Property Descriptions George (Goodrich) Farrell In tracing ancestors you will frequently find references to property. It may be described in metes (metes) and bounds, or as section, 14 Twp number 20, or SW 1/4 of NE 1/2. What does it all mean and how can you locate the property? There is an excellent website that will take you through the whole procedure. It explains it very clearly. If on the other hand you encounter the word "portiones" (there are other spellings) it is Spanish for portions. This is a term used in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California to describe early Spanish Land grants. In dry country they were often very long and narrow, fronting on a river to give each holder access to water. 3. Rev. Samuel H. Thompson was presiding elder of the Illinois Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and minister of the 1st Methodist Episcopal Church at belleview, Illinois from 1840-41. Although he is mentioned by name only in several state genealogy books, little direct information is available about his family. Can anyone confirm that he and wife Nancy died and are buried in St. Clair county? He died 1841, she after 1857.

    2. Debbie Vietzke
    3. Hello List, I have a Priscilla Clara FERRELL (AKA Clara Priscilla FERRELL), who married John Louis WOODS 5 Jan 1866 in St Clair County, Illinois. Priscilla / Clara FERREL was born 2 Srp 1844 and died 25 Jun 1916. According to census records her father was either born in Massachusetts (1880 census) or Vermont (1910 Census). Her mother was born in Illinois. She and John had at 7 children, in 1910 only 2 were living, one of which was the son, Martin WOODS who was living in Missouri at the time of her death. I am a WOODS descendant, but would like to know about Priscilla's ancestor's as well. I currently have nothing for them. I also do not have a date of death for John L WOODS. Thank you very much, Debbie V. _________________________________________________________________ Is your PC infected? 3. According to 'Land Transactions in Illinois Prior to the Sale of Public Domain' by Raymond H. Hammes, in __Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society,__ LXXVII: 2, Summer 1984, p. 112-113: Claims rejected appear in American State Papers: Public Lands II. The first report of the Commissioners was submitted 31 Dec 1809. Approved claims are listed separately from Rejected Claims *with reason given*. This would include your period of interest. Congress accepted and confirmed these findings on 1 May 1810. A couple years later a second Board of Commissioners was established to review/approve/reject confirmations of claims made by Govs. St. Clair and Harrison --submitted to Congress 1813 and confirmed 1 Apr 1814 (also appears in ASP-PL) Hammes goes on to say 50% of all claims were rejected, commonly due to fraud, forgery, perjury, but also by testimony of witnesses when the claim was known to be false (p. 113). Anyone whose settlers had a land interest in Illinois during the territorial period and earlier, will find the above cited article summarizes the land issues quite nicely. The Belleville Public Library (http://www.compu-type.net/rengen/stclair/BPL.htm or their own new web site at: www.bellevillepubliclibrary.org ) has this article; as does the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield (http://www.alplm.org/library/published_materials.html - 112 North Sixth Street, Springfield, IL 62701-1507.)
