SCCGS has posted an 1876 history of St Clair county first published that year by Edward Wm. West and committee. The direct link is here http://www.compu-type.net/rengen/stclair/1876hist.htm The history was first reprinted in St. Clair County Genealogical Society Quarterly volume 3 number 1, Spring 1980. It is reproduced here in its entirety and provides a glimpse of county life with notes about agriculture, breweries, distilleries, grains and fruits, mills, mining, newspapers, religious denominations, schools, transportation, and watercourses. Some "facts" are not quite right, a few names are misspelled, and the prose is typical of the time. Sources cited by the original committee include _My Life and Times_ by Govenor John Reynolds [known to have a few factual errors as well]; the _County Atlas_ [1874] ; the _History of Belleville_, by George A. Harvey, and the _Annals Of the West_, published by Dr. John Mason Peck For those new to the site, be sure to explore the home page link for database indexes that may help your research. Diane
Tianne and all, SCCGS only has the 1907 Bio-sketch index (and others) online. Technically it is a 'do-it-yourself' lookup. And, while SCCGS does offer to make photocopies of the respective sketches to anyone who wants one, the society does *not have exclusive rights* to make the photocopies; any library with this particular book can, any individual can, as this 1907 source is out of copyright. The society would frown however on wholesale scans being sent out of material published by the society (cemetery books, church records, quarterly articles, online indexes converted into a different format for sale) unless permission has been obtained in advance. SCCGS hopes the indexes help in your research. Judging from the wonderful orders, we know many researchers take advantage of these resources the society offers. And, so as not to miss a chance, think about joining! Thank you Diane for your handy link. My mailbox is jam packed with requests as you can well imagine. Just wanted to share with everyone something that I came across this weekend..... While attending the Waterloo, Illinois, Christmas Walk today, I went to a store called Mill Street Treasures, 125 W. Mill Street, Waterloo, IL 62298; ph: 618-939-3125. While there, I noticed a basket of old professional photographs that they are selling. Most pictures were taken at St. Louis, MO photographers but none of the pictures have names on them. I looked through them but didn't recognize anyone from my family tree....but there may be something from someone else's family tree. If you have any questions; don't hesitate to contact me. As mentioned before, the only things that are noticeable on the pictures (I didn't have time to look on the backsides inside the picture holders) are photographers names; no names of those pictured. Good Luck; Kelly Koehler [email protected]

Paul, My GG Grandparents were married in the Church on 8 November 1864, election day for Lincoln. I had no problem, just write the parish priest, offer a stipend and provide as much information as you have. Fishing expeditions will most probably be ignored, i.e. at least provide the names of the brides and groom, and year of the event. Same sort of data for Baptism. Stipend should probably be between 2 & 5 dollars per item requested. Here is an explanation about the various nonpopulation schedules. http://www.us-census.org/research/other.htm For Illinois, the extant 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 schedules (originals) are at the Illinois State Archives and can be ordered on interlibrary loan from a variety of institutions through your local library or the Family History Center near you. I believe the majority of schedules are extant for Illinois.
Is there someone in E. St. Louis that could do some lookups and coping of the 1926-27-28 City Directory for E. St. Louis. I'm looking for verification of my father and mother living in the town during that time period.\ Their names are: Frederick Willard and Beatrice Edwina DITTMAR I understand that the Directory is on microfilm at the Public Library. The St. Clair county genealogical society (SCCGS) has just added the 1870 Agricultural schedule to their web page. Included are the name, number of acres of improved and wooded land, and the dollar value of the farm and machinery. A farm was that which was owned or leased by one man and cultivated under his care. Farms of fewer than three acres were not reported unless five hundred dollars worth of produce was sold off from it during the year. This is one of those resources with many misspelled surnames. The surnames are spelled just as they were found (or interpreted) on the original schedule. For this reason, your search may be more successful if you read the lists from the area your ancestor was know to live in - instead of using the search box at the bottom of the home page. The introductory comments provide background and photocopy information. the link: http://www.compu-type.net/rengen/stclair/stchome.htm Diane
I am trying to contact anyone who might have a copy of a recent obit for great uncle, Odis W. KINZY who died on November 4, 2001. I believe that the notices were published in the paper on or about November 6, 2001 possibly November 7, 2001. Since this is such a recent death, I'm hoping that someone might have a copy of the obit and are willing to email me the contents. I would think both communities would have obituaries appearing in the Belleville News Democrat as well as their local newspapers, which are weeklies. The News Democrat obituaries are indexed in the Belleville library, where the papers are stored on microfilm. Write to Ms. LouAnn James, Archivist, Belleville Public Library, 121 East Washington St., Belleville, IL 62220; (618) 234-0441, ext 22. I believe they charge a pro-rated fee of $10.00 per hour research time; plus $0.25 or $0.50 per page copying from the microfilm. Good luck! Jim Bridges
