    1. [ILSTCLAI] Request: 1870 and 1880 Census lookup
    2. Celia & Ritch
    3. Hello everyone, I find myself in need of a lookup, as I can't get to a library right now, and I've got to know soon! I have had a possible new cousin contact me, but our dates do not match up. Does anyone have the 1870 and 1880 census that would be willing to do a look up for me? I need a lookup for H.H. (or Hubert) Hartmann, most likely in St. Clair Twp, St. Clair Co, IL. In 1870, his family would have consisted of wife Pamelia, children: Louis, maybe Mary, Richard/Dick, Otto, Ida, Benjamin, Hilda, and Anna. In 1880, it would have consisted of new wife Katherine, and maybe children: Richard/Dick, Otto, Ida, Hilda, Anna, and maybe George and Conrad. 2. Darrell & Nancy Giles
    3. While reading microfilmed copies of the Daily Advocate, St. Clair county, Belleville, IL. I came across this article which I thought might be of interest to members of the list. Nancy Giles Class of 1899 Calls Reunion On Wednesday There were 30 members in the old Belleville High School 1899 graduating class which will hold a golden reunion dinner at six o'clock Wednesday night at Hotel Belleville. 1. [ILSTCLAI] FAMILY OF DANIEL GRIFFITH
    2. Daniel Griffith my ggggrandfather lived in St Clair Co. from 1814 until 1828. His probate records listed payment to a person for hunting and searching for Daniel for 19 days. This makes me believe that he may have met foul play. He was mentioned earlier in the Kaskaskia newspaper, so I gather they knew of the Griffith family. I wanting to know, from this newspaper or maybe a newspaper in Belleville , was there a write up about an incident describing his death. Daniel was a trustee, tax collector in the TWP of Silver Creek. He also was an overseer of road work crews in the opening of roadways in this general area. Any help will be appreciated. 3. Does anyone on this list have any information about Levi Wells listed on the 1820 St. Clair Co. ILL. census. I am trying to see if he is the same Levi Wells that is in Georges Twp. Fayette Co. PA in 1800. Thanks, Marcia

    1. [ILSTCLAI] Morgan, Talbot, Wilson families
    2. I am searching for information on the family of Arthur MORGAN and his wife (we believe) Sarah TALBOT. Coombs family tradition says that Arthur came from Washington County, Kentucky where he had married Catherine Jackson. Arthur was in St. Clair County about 1804, plus or minus a couple of years. He settled in the area that became Columbia in Monroe County. He had a large family, including Nancy who married Isaiah Mead Coombs and then John Carr, Maria who married Mark Anthony Coombs, and Lucinda who married John (or Nelson) Turner. Also sons, Edward T (for Talbot?), and John born in 1805. Through County Court records Arthur Morgan was involved with guardianship cases with Talbot and Wilson families. I would appreciate any help you can give me about the Morgan and Talbot families. Would the records for the time period before 1816 be in St. Clair or Monroe County Court houses, or other repositories?

    1. [ILSTCLAI] Researching MIDDLETON
    2. Robert Middleton
    3. I am researching the MIDDLETONS of St. Clair, Washington, Clinton, and Perry Counties, and allied families. At present we figure the Middletons moved into the area along the Kaskaskia River as early as 1804. At present this would be the north and north west part of Washington Co. Without getting into to much of the paper work, "some" of the Middleton marriages, To: Parker 1832 Newcomb 1845 Morgan 1849 Butler 1854 Browning Outhouse Burton Carter Smith (born Germany) Middleton 1901 Mallett Brenchand Vaughn McNab Graves Dixon Haden Nelson Hagerman Huggins As I continue my research, there could be more allied names. 3. The Treasurer's office has microfilmed 'early' tax records beginning c1859 for Lands North, and 1874-75 for Lands South (north and south as designated in the township and range description). They do not search these records, one must make arrangements for a personal visit. IRAD in Carbondale http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/irad/iradhome.html has scattered, earlier tax and assessor's records for St Clair and southern Illinois. They will search what is available if you provide the township. More information on tax records can be found in St. Clair County Research and Resources: A Genealogist's Guide available from the St. Clair CoGenSoc http://www.compu-type.net/rengen/stclair/stchome.htm (may have to cut and paste URLs) Diane ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cheryl Jordan" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, March 10, 2002 2:27 PM Subject: [ILSTCLAI] real estate tax records > Do Real Estate tax records exist for the early 1860's? 3. True. The Walnut Hill plot records are at Belleville City Hall (ph: 618-233-6810). Photocopies of the same are also at the Belleville Public Library through c1995. 1. [ILSTCLAI] Michael and William Miller in Hampshire, Hardy Co, WV and Monroe, St. Clair Co., IL
    2. Stephen von Hitritz
    3. I am researching Michael Miller and his brother William. Michael Miller was born on February 28, 1760 in Hampshire Co., VA (WV) (Ref is his 1832 pension record) His brother William was born in 1768, same place. (Ref is 1850 St. Clair, IL census) According to his Rev War pension, Michael Miller served under Gen Arteman, Maj Manaweather, Capt Neal and Lt. Fisher from August 1, 1781 to November 1, 1781 and participated in the Siege of Yorktown. After returning home, he volunteered to serve in the company commanded by Capt. George Jackson and Lt. William White to "protect the frontier and fight indians". He served in this capacity until the end of 1782. Michael Miller m. Mary or Cecillia ??? in the 1790s in Hardy Co. William Miller married Mary Hoffman on February 9, 1796 in Hardy Co. I believe both men traveled to Monroe and St. Clair Co IL in 1797. William and Mary settled in St. Clair Co and Michael settled in Monroe Co. William and Mary had at least one child, Margaretta who married Aaron Stookey, son of Daniel Stookey, one of the original settlers of Belleville. Michael Miller and Mary or Cecillia had at least 4 children of which, Mary Miller m. Emory Peter Rogers in Waterloo (namesake of Peterstown, Waterloo, Monroe Co., IL). Mary died in childbirth in 1828. Their child also died. Sarah Miller m. Jesse Wiswall and had 11 children, one of which, Elizabeth, is my ggggrandmother. In my historical research in Hampshire Co. at the State Library of Virginia in Richmond, I saw evidence of two Michael Millers on the tax lists in the 1780s. This leads me to believe that Michael and William's father was a Michael Miller also. This is only a guess. If anyone can help me fill in the blanks on this family in VA/WV or in IL, I would be very grateful. I particulary want to know more about Capt Jackson and Lt. White in the indian fighting in Hampshire Co. in 1782, and of course if anyone would know of Michael Miller's wife's surname or his parents. Thanks Steve in Quinton, VA

    3. I am traveling in early June leaving here the last week in May. I do not know much. My Uncle Bruce was a great guy. His wife, my Aunt, is gone and his daughter died young with no children. I am putting his info into my family history because I want something of him to go on. He was born in E. St. Louis, Feb 1893. He went to E. St. Louis years ago to see if he could find his birth cert. but could not get it. It was told him that he was delivered by a midwife and she probably did not record it. On the 1900 Census it has a Louis J. Syarse as a grandson born the same month and year as my Uncle Bruce (middle name James). Uncle Bruce told me his father and mother moved to Atlanta, GA.. So far I haven't found them listed in the city directories. I was told that he had a brother Herbert. My uncle had a career in the Navy served in WW I & was called back for WW II. I have his service number but cannot get any info because I am a niece and no one else is alive. By the way I found his Grandfather's marriage Bruce H. to Mary Hill, St. Gabriels Church, on line in Chicago Nov 1882. Going to write to them to see if they still have it. Thanks for all the comments. I am so grateful! Mary ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, March 05, 2002 5:12 PM Subject: Re: [ILSTCLAI] East St. Louis Hi, Mary! My name is Gloria and I live in Florissant, MO just north of St. Louis, MO. The other email that warns you of E. St. Louis, while not without merit, doesn't really reflect what you need to worry about. I feel your first stop should be Belleville, IL - their Public Library has a great genealogy section with people who can help you find just about anything. Your major problem is going to be time. You could easily spend a whole day there. If you resubmit your request and give more details, there are folks on this list who will look up the data for you. Tell them approximately when you expect to be passing through so they know how long they have to look up stuff. There are those who do this all the time. But they need time to do it. You might put out a request and ask if someone would be able to help you get this info before you come. The more details the better. Some folks might have the info you need already. What you need to worry about is having enough quarters for parking and the copier at the library. If you decide you want to venture to E. St. L. just make sure you have a good map, lots of gas (there aren't that many gas stations) and a companion would be nice. Day light travel is recommended. Also, have you tried the rootsweb.com site for finding info? Also try several different spelling variations when you search. Happy hunting. Gloria

    2. Wishing to contact persons researching families of Eliza Rees Bryan, b. 10 March 1780 in PA, m. to Unknown Bryan; d. 10 Aug. 1866 in New Madrid, MO. I would like to contact any of her descendants. (Eliza wrote an account of the 1811-1812 earthquakes.) Eliza and unk Bryan had one child, Frederick Bryan who married Eliza Unknown. When Frederick died, he was buried at Pt. Pleasant, MO, and afterwards his widow lived in Frederickstown, MO. Frederick and his wife had one child, Mary Eliza Bryan, who married first, Richard M. Phillips. (She later married Judge Jas. Houston Howard of New Madrid. There were no children to this union.) Richard M. Phillips and Mary Eliza Bryan had 7 children: Boyd Powell Phillips Frederick Bryan Phillips, b. 09 Mar. 1855, "a prominent lawyer in Belleville, IL in 1893." Elizabeth Reece Phillips, b. circa 1853 (died young) Laura Lee Phillips, m. unknown Nall; b. 1860 Maggie May Phillips, b. 1863 William Evans Phillips, b. circa 1854 (died young) Richard M. Phillips, b. 24 March 1876; m. "Kate" Rodgers of Benton, MO. (This last-named Richard M. Phillips and Kate Rodgers had two daughters, Mary F. Phillips and Laura Phillips, who apparently moved to the state of Oregon.) My interest in St. Clair County would be Frederick Bryan Phillips, the lawyer who lived in Belleville, IL., apparently in 1893. A New Madrid newspaper dated 20 Jan. 1906 states that Richard M. Phillips of New Madrid had received news of 'the death of his brother Fred B. Phillips of Belleville, IL." I am searching for any descendants of this Phillips family or for anyone who is researching same. Thank you for any clues. Mary Sue Anton, New Madrid native
