    1. [ILSTCLAI] Request for Obituaries Info
    2. I just received a large amount of information on one of my Baldus family branches. Now I would like to obtain copies of about 25 obituaries. Can anyone tell me if 25 is too many to request from the library in Belleville at one time? I always send a check for the cost of copies and a small donation. I know the librarians are very busy and wondered if this was too much to ask. Conni in Ohio

Joffroix may or may not be his surname spelling in France. His surname on the 1880 Census is TOFFROY. Have always been looking for John SCHOFFRA as that is my mother's maiden name. Perhaps a member of this Sander family may know something about Joffroix. Thank you for your assistance. Edna

    2. How should I list Caseyville Township in my family history? In some recent information the location of birth for numerous family members, especially the ones born in the early part of the 1900s is listed as Caseyville Township. 1. [ILSTCLAI] Photocopies from Catholic parish registers
    2. Diane Walsh
    3. Listmates, If you know the Catholic parish your ancestor attended (or have a reasonably good idea) and have discovered that an index appears on the reel, http://www.compu-type.net/rengen/stclair/cathaid.htm a search is offered by the Belleville Public Library (BPL) to help you get photocopies. http://www.compu-type.net/rengen/stclair/BPL.htm The BPL will look in the index for the person. If shown in the index, they will then locate the entry in the parish register. Fee: $10.00 per hour plus expenses (copies at $0.50 each) and postage. My guess (from working with these reels) is it could take about 30 - 45 minutes to do this two-step process for each entry depending upon the parish. Children born of the same parents and found in the same index and register might save some time. The time ,ay vary widely because some of the indexes are buried amongst the registers (which were filmed consecutively). In other words, it is no quick look-up. >You need to know the film roll number to use the list. > The roll numbers can be determined by using this finding aid > http://www.compu-type.net/rengen/stclair/cathaid.htm >

I'd like some feedback from anyone with a Mac and a Netscape user or two to see if the page looks ok on those platforms. Thanks and happy hunting! Diane SCCGS Webmaster

    2. Believe the Mooney Motor Cars were manufactured in St. Louis. His descendants still live in St. Louis. I met a couple of them back in the early 80's. The grandson Corky has at least 3 of the original vehicles, one of which a Red Convertable was featured in one of the Muny Opera productions, (I believe this vehicle broke at least 3 arms of it's owners over the years). For the life of me I can't remember the name of the Equipment Supply House that his father owned, it was in the Industrial Complex East of Lindbergh at Bauer. The above vehicles were stored in the warehouse. You might contact the Muny, they just might have his name. 3. >From today's News Democrat Posted on Fri, Apr. 19, 2002 Whiteside students win national award Pupils honored for cleaning up a cemetery By Jaime Ingle Cleaning up the Whiteside family's cemetery on the hill by Whiteside School has won teachers and students national recognition. The Belleville school is one of 16 national winners in the National Service-Learning Leader School program sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency based in Washington, D.C. Whiteside eighth-grader Ashley Freeman smiled proudly Thursday when Superintendent Karen Meng announced the news to a core group of students who have helped rehab the cemetery, research the Whiteside family's history or tend the school's pond sanctuary and courtyard plants. ``We helped put in bunches of plants and called to get the lowest prices on plants and benches,'' Ashley said of her work with other students on the courtyard project. Science teacher Ellen Reilly said some students didn't like the idea of working in the cemetery, but quickly warmed up to the idea. ``Some were apprehensive at first, but most of them thought it was cool,'' Reilly said. Seventh-grader Jerrell Pittman said he enjoyed weeding the cemetery and seeing the old tombstones restored. ``It was worth it because we wanted to see it look better,'' he said Meng said the district has received $30,000 in grants in the past three years to make the improvements and plans to apply for another grant this year. Science and social studies teacher Marvina Jones said the restoration work provided hands-on science work and helped students hone their literary research skills by looking up facts about Whiteside family genealogy. Language arts and science teacher Monica Ybarra said students and teachers will create a Web site for the genealogy information and will burn a CD-ROM that will be sent to the Library of Congress.

    3. QUERY: LETTER; FROST SURNAMES Searching for info on my maternal grandmother, Louise Frances LETTER, b. 1884, in Belleville, IL, to William F. LETTER and Amalia (Emelia; Emily) FROST, both born in Prussia. Louise Frances LETTER married Ernest Jasper BROOKS about 1911 and moved to Kingsville, TX, where she died in 1930. Louise died when her only child, my mother, Helen Lucille BROOKS, was only 11, and after that they lost contact with Louise's family. There were several other children in Louise's family, but I believe she was closest to her sister EMMA, who married ???? GALLI and moved to California, where she died in Sept., 1967. I was able to find the marriage license of William LETTER and Emelia FROST, and William's occupation is given as Coalminer. However, at the time of his second marriage to Annie Mary KREITNER, he gives his occupation as Policeman. (In Belleville??) The only personal info I have about Louise is that she supposedly went to a convent school, perhaps as a boarder, because she is not listed with her family in the 1900 census. Any information about the LETTER/FROST families would be appreciated. Thanks! Jane H. Brown ([email protected])

    2. Diane Walsh
    3. 15 April 2002 The St. Clair County Genealogical Society is pleased (thrilled, excited, overjoyed) to announce the completion of their Catholic Records Project. Register entries prior to 1931 from all parishes in the Diocese are included in the project. Please read the Introduction and view the Finding aid that lists all microfilm available http://www.compu-type.net/rengen/stclair/cath.htm There are plans to put a Guide to each roll of film (170) online to help researchers prepare prior to arrival at the library. This Guide will provide specific beginning and ending dates for each register on the roll and the sequence in which it appears. In the meantime, both libraries below have this Guide. A complete microfilm set is now available at the Belleville Public Library http://www.compu-type.net/rengen/stclair/BPL.htm . The microfilm Guide to each roll of film is available at the Archives Desk -- ask for it. St. Louis County Library http://www.slcl.lib.mo.us/slcl/sc/index.html will soon have a set available and will be announced on this maillist when that time comes. These are the only two microfilm sets for release. After you read the Editing Process you will have a better understanding why. Happy researching!! Diane Walsh, Project Director

    3. I saw in the St. Clair Co. Genealogical Society Newsletter that the society is making duplicate copies of all the parish registers in the Belleville Diocese. The article also noted that there would be copies available at the Belleville Public Library and the St. Louis County Library. I was wondering if a copy was going to be available through the LDS Family History Library? Since I live in California, it would sure be nice if I could order a copy of the film to read at my local Family History Center. Marilyn Lane Researching MOELLINGER & HEBERER in St. Clair Co.
