Thank you for the people who emailed from Clinton and St. Clair County. >From ithe 1880 Census and Auerbach, Hessen, GERM baptisms it looks as if Johann Hendrich "Henry" Walthes and Maria Margaret Seitz left GERM after the birth of son Peter in 1844. They were in IN, Dearborn, Lawrenceburg in 1853. They were in IL, Clinton, Looking Glass by 1866. 1900 They were in IL, Clinton, Looking Glass. 1920 They were in Clinton, Looking Glass & St. Clair, Mascoutah. >From the baptism record of Johann Peter Walthes bp 13 Mar 1844 Auerbach, Hessen, Germany mentions settled in Mascoutah, USA. Searching censuses I found a Peter Walthes in 1880 & 1900 living at Looking Glass, Clinton County, IL In the 1920 census found most Walthes in Looking Glass and East St. Louis but found a William Walthes in Mascoutah, St. Clair, IL This family looks like they settled in Indiana abt 1850 and then IL around 1860 in both Looking Glass Township and Macoutah. Between 1860 & 1870 did a group of Germans settle this area? Were they just individual families or a group? Judy Ullman
I understand there will be a Donnewald family reunion in Carlyle, IL on August 3rd, 2002. I just found out from cousins in St. Louis yesterday and don't know all of the details yet. The Donnewalds settled in St. Clair County about 1846 coming from St. Vit, Westphalia. Englebertus (Albert) married Christina Vahlkamp in 1849 in St. Libory, St. Clair County (my ancestors). Englebertus came to the USA with his sisters, Maria Catherina (Hartlage), Anna Christina (Vahlkamp), Maria Anna (Rickelman) and possibly his brother, Johann Henrich Donnewald. Contact the Illinois Comptroller's Office -- Cemetery Care and Burial Trust Department by phone, toll-free, at 1-877-203-3401 or by e-mail, [email protected] Their website has current legislation http://www.comptroller.state.il.us/CemeteryCare/ <snip> How do I find out who is responsible for the caretaking of [the Padfield] cemetery? ... I am also interested in finding out if there might be any grants available to help cover the expense of cleaning this place up. > Susan Carroll Kelley [email protected]
If the cemetery tombstones have been recorded by SCCGS (they've done more than 150), you can narrow the cemetery in which your ancestors reside by searching this surname index http://www.compu-type.net/rengen/stclair/CEMETA.htm Or, you can also phone the archives dept. at the BPL and ask them to look in their St. Clair county Burial File which they compiled from the same SCCGS cemetery publications plus Walnut Hill in Belleville. Contact info is here: http://www.compu-type.net/rengen/stclair/BPL.htm Be aware not all cemeteries have been inventoried. For those still needing transcription, see this list which can be scanned for keywords by township using the Find feature on your browser. The word [blank] in the far right column means it has not been published/inventoried by SCCGS. Diane Diane

Hello, I have recently found out that I have relatives buried in one of the cemeteries in St. Clair. |Can anyone give me any suggestions as to how to find which cemetery they might be in? Or who the caretakers are and how to contact them? Thankyou, Sally Havens
Just in case anyone hasn't already seen these- [Forwarded from the Schleswig-Holstein List originally from the GERMAN-BOHEMIAN List] The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) launched its redesigned website today. Hi listers, I hope you can send me in the right direction on this one. There is a cemetery in eastern St. Clair county, near Summerfield, that is commonly referred to as the Padfield Cemetery. It is severely overgrown and I would like to do something about it. How do I find out who is responsible for the caretaking of this cemetery? It hasn't been used in a very long time, so I assume that the caretaking was turned over to the county. You have to go through private land to get to it, but the owner is very generous when it comes to this. Their field road goes right by the cemetery, and the lady of the house encouraged us to use it. In addition to finding out who is responsible for the cemetery, I am also interested in finding out if there might be any grants available to help cover the expense of cleaning this place up. I really don't know if this is possible, and I am willing to organize this myself without any extra funds, I was just curious. Any information an! yone might have that could help would be wonderful. Thanks in advance! Susan Carroll Kelley

If anyone happens across an obituary from any of the local Illinois papers for Cleon Stevenson, I would be very grateful for a copy. Cleon Stevenson was born July 10, 1909 in Illinois, the son of Edward Andrew Stevenson (1879-1940) and Sadie W. McCauley (1887-1971). He moved north to Ann Arbor, Michigan to work at the Hoover plant there until he returned to Marissa, Illinois to farm. He took care of his elderly neighbors, Irvin and Eva Patton Dunn, who left him their adjoining farm when they died. Cleon married Jewel Tuttle (b. 1912) on April 23, 1930 in Bowling Green, Ohio. Their children are Dean Ornell, Ruby Joann, Lloyd Cleon, Loren, and Dennis. Cleon passed away June 3, 2002, just short of his 93rd birthday. Cleon's father Edward played in a band with his brothers called the Stevenson Boys. They played at parties and dances around the area. Edward moved to Michigan and worked at the Hoover plant in Ann Arbor until his death. His wife, Sadie, returned to Illinois and lived in Sparta. She used to make quilts by hand. She always had a box of chocolates for her great grandchildren, and a quilting frame in the living room. Sadie was the daughter of Archibald McCauley (1851-1920) and Mary Elizabeth Hemphill (1856-1936). Her maternal grandparents, Hugh Hemphill (1822-1919) and Nancy McKenny (1828-1914), came to the U.S. from Ireland in 1867 and lived in Marissa. Sadie's paternal grandparents, Archibald McCauley (1816-1890) and Mary Ann Sands (1826-1891), also came to the U.S. from Ireland. Archibald homesteaded land NE of Tilden, Illinois and it is still in the McCauley family. Cleon's paternal grandparents were Robert S. Stevenson (1821-1888) and Elizabeth Sands (1837-1931). Robert was born in Barrhead, Renfrewshire, Scotland, the son of Michael Stevenson (1798-1884) and Janet Telford (1799-1860). Robert is listed as a harness maker in the 1850 census, living with his parents. Michael brought his family from Scotland to Illinois and received a land grant in Randolph County in 1843. Michael's parents were Michael (John) Stevenson (1761 - ?) of Paisley and Margaret Pollock (1761 - ?) of Barrhead. His grandparents were Robert Stevenson and Christian Reid, married in Low Church Parish, Paisley, Renfrew in 1744. Margaret Pollock was the daughter of Robert and Janet Pollock, married June 22, 1757 in Neilston Parish, Renfrewshire. Dear List, Does anyone on this list have John C. Graeser, Hotel Keeper, in Springfield, IL 1880, among your records? I am trying to make a connection between the Graesers and a laborer, Adam WOLF,age 48, who was at the hotel at the time of the 1880 Census. I am researching the Christian Wolf family of Mascoutah, IL. I believe his father was John Wolf. I found a John Wolf, age 58, on the 1870 Census in St. Clair County with a George Graeser. Christian Wolf had a brother named Adam. I am trying to locate Adam Wolf. Thank you for your help in advance. Darlene [email protected]
Dear Listers, I believe I have found the Christian Wolf death that had been my brick wall. Christian Wolf died in St.Louis on 8 Feb 1910. The name of his parents on the death certificate are John Wolf and Elizabeth Wagner, birth place for all three is "Germany." The informant was Christina Dockery 306 Market St., St.Louis. Do any of you have anyone listed in the subject line? The Haas and Wolf families were in St. Clair county at least for some time. The Acker-Reis-Helms-Goedelman-Rosche families were in St. Clair and or Monroe Counties. I would like to share information. Thanks to all in advance. Darlene Burzynski
