    1. [ILSTCLAI] Virginia Militia
    2. G.E. (Dutch) Schupp
    3. Hi All! I see in the latest newsletter (St. Clair Gen. Soc.) that the library has a new book "Virginia Milita in the War of 1812" (2 Vols.). Could someone please do a look-up for me in those books? I am looking for information on my G-Grandfather Daniel Schupp/Shupe/Shoop, who served in the war of 1812. Thanks in advance for your help. 1. [ILSTCLAI] McFARLAND, DURFEE, CHURCH, FRANKLIN (maybe TAILOR/TAYLOR?)
    2. ron heiskell
    3. My major brick wall is my g g grandmother Martha Adeline McFARLAND b. 17 Jan 1852 Belleville, St. Clair Co, IL d. 12 Jan 1933 Monroe Co, IL m. Nathan S. DURFEE on 21 Mar 1869 Monroe Co, IL. No additional info is known from their marriage documents. On Martha's death certificate the informant was her son-in-law John ALLEN, and he wrote for her father "don't know, b. don't know" and for her mother "--- CHURCH[or CHINCH?], b. VA". Martha's obituary provided no info on her parents. >From the book "The Descendants of Thomas Durfee of Portsmouth, R.I." by William R. Reed, her father was George McFARLAND and mother was Mrs. Cynthia McFARLAND. A George McFARLAND married a Senda FRANKLIN on 20 Dec 1849 St. Clair Co, IL. The 1850 Belleville, St. Clair Co, IL census lists: McFARLAND, George 50 M Carpenter b. TN Syntha A. 43 F b. VA FRANKLIN, Jane 16 F b. IL Silas 11 M b. IL Isaac 8 M b. IL So far, I have been unable to locate George or Senda/Syntha A. McFARLAND on any other census, but found whom I believe to be my Martha on the 1860 Red Bud, Monroe Co, IL census: TAILOR, Alozo[Aloso?] 43 M b. MA Lucind 46 F b. TN FRANKLIN, Silas 21 M b. IL Jos 17 M b. IL McFARLAND, Martha 9 F b. IL Martha is listed with her husband Nathan on the 1880 Monroe Co, IL census which lists her father b. VA, mother b. KY. On the 1900 Monroe Co, IL census, her father is listed as b. IL, mother b. IL. On the 1920 St. Clair Co, IL census her father is listed as b. KY, mother b. KY. I'm not sure how, or if, this fits in, but found this entry on the 1860 Prairie du Rocher P. O., Monroe Co, IL census: CHURCH, Lewis 28 M Farmer b. IL Virginie 28 F b. VA Ausilla 5 F b. IL William 3 M b. IL FRANKLIN, Silas 21 M Laborer b. IL Possibly two similar Silas FRANKLIN's, or appears same Silas FRANKLIN was in Red Bud in the same household as Martha on 22 Aug and in the household of Lewis CHURCH on 25 Aug, 1860. Is Lewis CHURCH possibly related to Martha's possible mother "---- CHURCH[CHINCH?]"? Does anyone connect to any of these families? Any additional info will be greatly appreciated. Jan Heiskell

    1. [ILSTCLAI] German terms
    2. Rev. Jim Bridges
    3. Is there anyone on this list who knows anything about German as it was spoken and written about 200 years ago? I have a letter written in German in 1834 to relatives in Germany which refers to individuals as cousins. However, these individuals were not his cousins but were instead his aunt and uncle. Recently, I have just come across a German marriage certificate from 1819 which refers to two individuals who I think are cousins by marriage as uncles of the bride. We do not have proof of the actual relationships, but age wise, it would not seem possible to have the individuals be her uncles. My question: Is it possible that these terms, "cousin" and "uncle", were used interchangeably, or even oppositely, to what they mean today? Any insight would be appreciated. Jim Bridges

Just mentioning to this list that I'm planning on traveling sometime in 2003 (probably September or early October; possibly June) to the Frankfurt area, with some side travel to the black forest and the area east of Frankfurt (possibly taking in Munich & Salzburg as well). Since many of you also have ancestry from that region, I invite someone interested in this itinerary to contact me if wishing to know more. I'll be looking for travel companion(s) as this is not my husband's cup of tea [he'll be with his golf buddies traveling to Scotland!]. My address is: [email protected] Marsha St. Louis

    1. [ILSTCLAI] Heinrich Hennecke and widow Maria Elizabetha
    2. Looking for info on Heinrich Hennecke. From the Trinity Lutheran Church records I recieved Heinrich died Oct. 8, 1851 (Millstadt). It appears he had a daughter before he married Maria. But that is all I have found on him. His widow Maria Elizabetha married Johann Friedrich Gerhard Buccholz, but I don't know her maiden name. She was born "Mar 30, 1817 in Altweilnau Herzogthum, Nassau, Amt. Usingen" and died Jan 21, 1870. There appear to be quite a few Hennecke in this area, and I am trying to figure out how they connect. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx! Sonia Researching: HENNECKE, WEBER, PREUSSER, FRANKENBACH
