In a message dated 08/28/2002 9:30:11 PM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: > He died on > Dec 6, 1950 in E.St,Louis, Ill Did you call or write the county courthouse for a death certificate? Checked online and it says, Alfred Buxton, male, white, 46 years, certificate no. 0052567 death date 1950-12-04 Saint Clair. It will have the names of his parents on it, and frequently the funeral home and cemetary. Also the Belleville Public Library has an obituary index, and most of their newspapers on microfilm, so you may be able to get a copy of his obituary from them. That may say where he worked. Also he should be on the 1920 Census, however the only Buxton I could find for Saint Clair County was a household headed by Archie Allyn that included his married sister Geneva Buxton in East Saint Louis. If you do not have addresses for the County Courthouse or the Library, let me know and I will get them for you. Denise

    1. [ILSTCLAI] my father
    2. I am trying desperately to find out some information on my father. I know his name was Afred Buxton born aug 8, 1904 in Belleville, Ill. He died on Dec 6, 1950 in E.St,Louis, Ill but aside from finding out that he died I can't find anything! I have checked marriage license and still no data. If you can help I would certainly appreciate it. I am getting disillusioned with this search, you see he died six months after I was born and I never knew him. thanks sandi scott [email protected]

Would any one know this off hand or could some one look at the newspapers of the time for me? Cheryl Jordan Clinton County, Ohio

    1. Re: [ILSTCLAI] obtaining death certificates through the mail
    2. Diane Walsh
    3. Yes, the ISA is the only one online with the Illinois deaths originally reported to the Illinois Dept of Health 1916 - c1950 There may be errors in the index - or any index where we rely on information typed into a database/web page/publication. Like you, I would also send the St. Clair County clerk's office a copy of the page and ask them to kindly double check for the certificate and mention you already paid the fee whenever;[ providing the database said the certificate was filed in St Clair. ] I would also ask that if the record is not found because the person did not die in St. Clair and the certificate is filed elsewhere, that they contact the Ill Dept of Health to get the record corrected. I would presume this would happen if the village was in a neighboring county and really filed there. Then, once confirmed, I would also contact the ISA so that they could correct the information online --they would need a copy of the certificate to do so. Diane

    3. Greetings list, I just had a question, if anyone is familiar with the County Clerk's office and how their response is through the mail to requests for death certificates? I recently looked up on the Illinois Death Index and found who I believed was my ggg-grandmother listed. Because the Illinois State Archives is so swamped with requests, I decided to go directly to St. Clair County with my request. Even though I gave them the exact information from the index, they state that it is not in their county. I suppose the index could be incorrect, though I know they lived in St. Clair Co., so I doubt that. Is the Illinois State Archives now the only place with the records that are posted online? I have printed out the page from the website and have returned it with another request, but I was hoping for a little input. Thanks. KellyGet more from the Web. The consensus has been that the terms were not used interchangeably. Cousin was used somewhat more loosely than it is today, and it could include those we now consider our uncles and aunts. The term for uncle that was under question is "oheim" - which is not used that often. It means uncle, mother's brother, but in some cases, it can also refer to grandfather. Jim Bridges

    1. [ILSTCLAI] Re: German Terms
    2. Jim, Just a thought and I am not conversant with languages. But, back in the era you are working I believe you may bump into some of the idiosyncrasies of "High" and "Low" German. My grandparents one born in Belleville in the 1880's and the other born in 1890 in Western Missouri both spoke Low German or a combination of whatever when they didn't want their children to hear the conversation. One of my uncles studied German in High School and after bouncing his head against the wall for a couple of years, he still couldn't understand them. Sorta like the 50 years ago when it was difficult for some of us Yankees to understand the Floridians until we overpowered the population.
