Hi all, I am searching for the parents of Malinda / Melinda SCOTT who married William WOODS 13 Jul 1830 in SCC. According to a Rootsweb WorldConnect file, she was born in 1810 and died in 1849. William WOODS is the son of John WOODS and Delilah HILL. Thank you, Debbie V.
St. Augustine Catholic Parish at Hecker is part of the Belleville Diocese. All parish registers through 1930 are available at the Belleville Public Library on microfilm. Here is the Finding Aid http://www.compu-type.net/rengen/stclair/cathaid.htm Determine the Roll number, then click the link for that roll at the top of the page. Scroll down to find your parish and read the list of sacramental registers available with dates as they appear on film. This was a project of the St. Clair County Genealogical Society which is now accepting memberships for the coming 2005 membership year :) http://www.compu-type.net/rengen/stclair/stchome.htm (the bottom of the page has society info and application blank). I was looking at LDS film # 1317835 "Conveyance Records 1816-1900, Monroe County" a few weeks ago for the land records of my "possible" ancestors. Their 1846 town of Tamarawa land record included the phrase "land described by town diaries". Does anyone have info about these "town diaries"? Tamarawa was near Hecker, Monroe County. According to the land records, Tamarawa was partly in Monroe County, and partly in St. Clair County. Dan Daniel J. List, St. Clair queries (questions) submitted by those with ancestors in our county are posted on the St. Clair USGenWeb Project pages free here http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilstclai/queries.htm Here is a helpful guide to composing queries directed to libraries, other researchers, and governmental agencies. A sample query is also included. Although located on an Ohio web site, the guidelines are universal. http://www.bgsu.edu/colleges/library/cac/genealogy/gnquery.html (The site is part of the Center for Archival Collections at Bowling Green - they have local governmental records of several northwest Ohio counties you might explore if it applies to your research http://www.bgsu.edu/colleges/library/cac/lgrmain.html ). Hi all, Here is a link to an old message that was posted to this group back in 1999. There are two obituaries, from Aug 1943, both mentioning quite a few names and information about this man, fellow veterans and other historcal information that might be of interest to all. http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ifetch2?/u1/textindices/I/ILSTCLAI+1999+592804019+F Debbie V.
My book, Grand Army of the Republic, Department of Illinois: Transcription of the Death Rolls, 1879-1947, contains records of 404 members of the various G.A.R. posts in St. Clair County, including 200 members of Hecker Post #443 in Belleville. If I can do look-ups for anyone, please let me know. More details about the book are available at www.ngpublications.com Dennis
This is the only Monroe Co. GAR post I find in Arrowheads to Aerojets: JACOB C. GAUEN POST, NO. 563, GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC The Jacob C. Gauen Post, No. 563, Grand Army of the Republic, was chartered March 1, 1886. There is no record of charter officers. Peter P. Rau was the last surviving member of the local GAR before he died August 7, 1933. The members took part in all parades in the county. The charter members were: Edwin Nixon, Louis Arns, Oscar O'Neil, Adam Wildt, Anton Meyer, Conrad Herman, Joseph Keilback, Stephen Schaefer, Henry Meyer, Louis Tiechgraeber, George Schaefer, Mathias Schmeids, Louis Simplemann, Dan Schultheis, Christian Boedecker, Philip Heusohn, William Schlingmann, Christian Dobrman, William Hillyard, John Martin, William Rogers, Daniel Zimmer, Joseph Maudinger, and Jacob Satter. The book doesn't mention a separate chapter in Hecker, but the authors of this book seemed to focus mainly on the Waterloo area. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cheryl" <cjordan3@cinci.rr.com> To: <ILSTCLAI-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, September 07, 2004 6:31 PM Subject: Re: [ILSTCLAI] Hecker GAR list? > Please reply to the list as I am interested in this information also. > Thanks, > Cheryl > Clinton county, Ohio > > Subject: [ILSTCLAI] Hecker GAR list? > > > Hi all, > I am looking for information about the Hecker GAR (Grand Army of the > Republic, Civil War Veterans group). Marsha, is this the FRIEDRICH HECKER (1811-1881) family? at this link http://www.umsl.edu/~whmc/guides/whm0451.htm I don't connect to this family but he had dealings and kept papers that document land deals with the PADFIELD family. Please post your findings to the list as I would be interesting in hearing about it. I am very interested in creating a list of persons who are researching Hecker or who have a substantial interest in the development of Freedom/Hecker/Winstanley and their beginnings. If you are among these, please send an email to the list identifying yourself as a Hecker researcher. We might work together to compile a comprehensive literature for our libraries on the history of Freedom/Hecker; to my knowledge, such a history has not been printed--I would love to be informed otherwise. Thanks. Marsha Clark
Please reply to the list as I am interested in this information also. Thanks, Cheryl Clinton county, Ohio Subject: [ILSTCLAI] Hecker GAR list? Hi all, I am looking for information about the Hecker GAR (Grand Army of the Republic, Civil War Veterans group). Does anyone happen to have a roster of members? I am specifically looking for those of the WOODS family. Thanks, Debbie V.
Thanks to all of you who helped answer my questions! BTW, the book I'm reading is SHAMAN, by Noah Gordon. It is set mostly in Rock Island, IL, but mentions St. Clair Co and Belleville -- not that I knew that when I bought it at the local library's used book sale --- a quarter well-spent. :) Jane
go to http://www.lbah.com/Canine/demodex.htm Seems not only dogs and cats but also humans can get the mange
Would anyone know what the term "Illinois mange" would refer to, in about 1840? I've been reading a novel, set in southern IL in that time period; apparently it was some sort of seasonal affliction that struck pioneers who were breaking the soil for the first time. If left untreated too late, apparently it was fatal. I tried to google this, but google, in its wisdom, decided I just can't spell and gave me references to things MANAGED in Illinois -- and also a recipe for blanc mange. Thanks, Jane

Jerry: I just got back from Branson a couple of days ago and was inundated with phone calls and e-mails about the destruction of this historical old building. I can't believe it! The sneakiness and backhanded way in which this was done is low, even for politicians!! These short-sighted political hacks will be gone in a few years, but the destruction they leave is forever. It is particularly sad to me, as my 3rd gr-grandfather, Joseph W. HILTON, built the hotel in the 1840's. I have done much research and believe it was the first Hilton Hotel in the country. Since the majority of Waterloo's ancestry came to IL way after the Revolution and Indian wars were fought and won, many seem to have no respect for the Colonial Americans who made the land on which they settled safe for them and their families. If Monticello or Mt. Vernon were in Waterloo, I'm sure they would have been torn down long ago. More concrete on the land is so necessary! I personally, and as an officer of the Monroe County Historical Society, am disgusted with this brazen destruction of early county history, as are many members of the Society. St. Clair County residents suffered a like experience when their beautiful old Grecian-style courthouse was covertly razed and the ugly concrete bunker was erected. What a shame! Janet
