Regarding obits, the Kankakee Public Library has told me that they will look up obits for people writing to them if they are only requesting one thing. I would suggest that anyone wanting an obit to send the exact information on the individual and include a small amount of money for their trouble. If they are looking for someone in an outlying township, you should tell the library the exact location since the early newspapers had separate columns for news from the other townships. If you can't get an obit that way or by writing to the Historical Society, who keep a file of all obits, the genealogy society will make a trip to the library but do request a donation of $10.
