    3. Hi Tricia, I constantly use the USGS site find places. http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html Simply type in the form what you are looking for and it will give you a list of placename matches. Select a likely match and from there you can select a map. For instance, looking for St. George cemetery, I would fill out the form with Kankakee for county, Illinois for state, and cemetery for feature type. If I did not specify the feature type, the resulting list would have pages of placenames in Kankakee county. I would leave the Feature Name blank in this case since I know the feature is in Kankakee County, just in case they spell St. George cemetery differently. After submitting the form, I get a list of all the cemeteries in Kankakee! There I can choose St. George cemetery and I go to the details for that feature. From the details page I have the choice of several maps. If I choose show feature location, I get a page with first a nearly useless large map showing the location in the United States, and then below it (the stupid US maps loads first) and excellent map with a red marker showing the location of St. George Cemetery. Like many map sites, I can zoom in or out. This map is very useful because I can see roads and figure out how to get there if I like. If I choose digital raster graphic, I get a USGS topographic map . (no marker) If I choose digital ortho quadrangle, I get a should get an aerial photo (no marker,) but apparently one is not available for the St. George cemetery. This view is kinda difficult to navigate, even when it is available, unless you have a real map or know the area very well, but in some cases it can be very cool. For fun, go to http://terraserver.microsoft.com/advfind.asp Enter your town or something really near your house. Select go If there is only a Topo Map available Image, and not also a photograph, go back and choose a different area you know well. Choose the Topo Map and then navigate and zoom until you find the location of your house. On the left side of the page, select photo. If there is a photo available for your area, you should be able to see your house. Where photos exist for the Kankakee area, the one I have found are from July, 1997 Lee Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: "tricia.A.Young" <patooch@earthlink.net> To: <ILSTANNE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 20, 2000 11:52 AM Subject: [ILSTANNE] Ganeer Twp - St. George Cemetary > I've had a question for awhile and not asked: the KKK Genealogy site > shows a number of my relatives at St. George cemetary and the Locations > says it's in a Ganeer township.
