    3. I agree... That PURKEY is a toughie. The closest I can find in my database is the name PERTHUIS (pronounced PAIR-TWU-EE --- actually TU-EE but the TU is a sound not said in English so you would have to be French to know how to say it). BTW... LALIME is a "dit" name for PERTHUIS (silent "s" ). One thing I have observed is that the sound THIER is often written by anglophones as CHY or KEY (as in GAUTHIER). Anglophones (English speakers) have a hard time with the French "TH" which does not sound like the English "TH" but is simply said as a hard "T" followed by a hard vowel. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brenda Hébert" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, April 17, 2003 12:20 AM Subject: [ILSTANNE] PURKEY? > Salut! Hi! I have a question -- in doing research on the PRAIRIE line, I came across the surname PURKEY from Momence. I have been wracking my brain all day trying to figure out WHAT French-Canadian name that could have been originally. Alphonsine PURKEY married Jesse PRAIRIE. She was the daughter of a Joseph PURKEY. 3. May I suggest that it is POURQUÉ. I don't personally know of such a surname, but if there is such a name, it would be pronounced and written as PURKEY by Anglos. Just a shot in the dark.
