Meents, 89, of Ashkum, will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday, with a 4:30 p.m. wake service, at the Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Assumption BVM Catholic Church, Ashkum, where he was a member. Rev. James Holup will officiate. Burial will be in Ashkum Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley or to Assumption BVM Catholic Church. He died Tuesday (Aug. 16, 2005) at his home. Mr. Meents was a lifelong farmer and had worked for Meier Oil Service. He recently retired after 31 years as an Ashkum Township Trustee. He was born April 21, 1916, in Ashkum, the son of Carl and Delia Fortemps Meents. His wife, the former Ruth E. Merkle, whom he married Nov. 16, 1940, in Ashkum, died July 9, 1990. He was a member of the Ashkum Lions Club and a charter member and former president of the Central High School Athletic Booster Club. He was an Ashkum Township fireman for 31 years. He enjoyed reading, fishing and bowling. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Fleurette Meents of Kankakee, Tim and Pat Meents of Wilmington; three daughters and one son-in-law, Pat and Parr Schoolman of Clifton, Mary Ann Westgor of Dixon, Karleen Yohnka of Ashkum; one brother-in-law, Edward Hebert of Bradley; one sister-in-law, Genevieve Fruin of Gilman; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and special friend, Irma Giles of Kankakee.
