Hi Mike & List - Your message reminds me to ask how many of our listers' French-Canadian ancestors fought in the Civil War. In my last message, I forgot to mention that Etienne Regnier [Stephen Regne] enlisted in the civil war 18 November 1861 - at the age of 68! as a private in E Company of the 53th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry. He was discharged due to disability on 08 June 1862. At that time he said he was from Kankakee. Also enlisted the same day was Louis Regne; and Joseph Regne, who enlisted 26 January 1862. It's not clear how they are related as there are many Louis and Joseph in this family. I have to send for the records to see exactly who they are, but if they are the brothers, then they would also have been aged 70 and 64. According to the Regniers in North America, by Fr. Hopkins, people left this area for the same reason they came - Land. Some going to South Dakota like Mike & Carol Anne's families, and others going to Minnesota, Kansas and Iowa. A branch of the Regnier family bought railroad company land in Ghent Minnesota in 1883.
