    3. Yes, they do deserve a huge thank you for doing this work for the benefit of the rest of us. I can't imagine the years and years of trying to decipher the handwriting and making the translations. The spelling in the US census records are full of errors and they were written in English! -----Original Message----- From: Chiniquy@aol.com [mailto:Chiniquy@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, April 27, 2005 3:56 PM To: ILSTANNE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [ILSTANNE] Ledoux/Ladoux and Payet/Payette In a message dated 4/27/05 12:41:02 PM Pacific Daylight Time, bob.powell2@comcast.net writes: > Thank you! They were very hard to read and the gals that made all this possible for us did the best they could at the time. All of our french-canadian names took a real beating. 1. Re: [ILSTANNE] RE: Regnier/Graveline
    2. Thanks! Next question. Any idea what Community School Teacher might mean in the context of those times? I am having trouble finding what happened to Pierre Beck as he doesn't appear in the 1870 census anywhere that I can find (wife does in Iroquois). While I can track much of the family and events for the 1860's and 1870's through church records he just seems to disappear. Pike's Peak? Now there is an interesting occupation! It lists his occupation as Com Sch Teach. I would guess that to be Community School Teacher. There were 2 living in Kankakee that year. Bourbonnias did not have St. Viatruse College listed that year. Another interesting occupation was that there were quite a number of young men whose occupation was listed as "gone to Pike's Peak". -Cyndi -----Original Message----- From: Candismom@aol.com [mailto:Candismom@aol.com] Sent: Tuesday, April 26, 2005 9:50 PM To: ILSTANNE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [ILSTANNE] RE: Regnier/Graveline My family is the Beck/Clouatre line but wondering if St. Viatruse College or Notre Dame Academy were functioning in 1860? I'm sure of Jean Baptiste Ladoux's name. (He spelled it with an a in later life) What I'm not sure of is: (a) how the record keepers could have mispelled it, and (b) Marie's name. I had looked seriously at Restitute Robich because of these records, but Father Albert Ledoux told me he had received a set of cards with documentation on this Ledoux branch, and that he felt sure Marie Payet was her name. I know Jean B. Ladoux had no sons, so that does rule out Restitue since you've given me data showing she had two. (It was a big deal in our family that he had had 12 daughters (counting his step daughter by Martha) and that he had no sons.) A distant cousin (now gone) told me Jean's first wife's name was Marie Payey. That would jive with the record you found which gives the day. Now I don't know if Jean B.'s last name was mispelled in the record (probably) or if my cousin chose this date for the marriage because she found this record and assumed this was our John B. At least it gives me something new to work on. And, a new spelling (Payai) for Marie (Payet/Payette/Payay)'s last name. Do you find any entries for Agnes or Josephine's births? My great grand-mother Agnes was still alive when I was a girl and lived nearby. We also went to visit the "Ida May Ladoux" who I knew Ida as my Aunt May Johnson. Your information sent me back looking for a second JB Ledoux. I had seen one in the 1960 census, but the search said he was 89 years old, so I had discounted him. This time I went to the record, and found the JB Ledoux married to Restitute and with four children ranging from 3 to 12. (The ages were obviously misread and he was 39 instead of 89) Now that that couple is accounted for, I still need to find my JB Ledoux, who would have been 22 in 1860 if I go by his age in the 1870 census. Thank you again. You've given me a big step forward. 3. This is very helpful. 3. I believe that I found him. I searched for a John born in Canada between the ages of 20-29 and white and male and living in Illinois in Kankakee county in 1860. There were 21 listed John LEDOUD looked to be close enough. They are living in St. Ann. House number 2171, Family number 2083. John Ledoud age 22 Farmer 225 born Canada Marie " age 18 Female Born Canada And I did send you these two births from St. Marie of Beaverville. The records begin in November of 1859 so their marriage would not be there. You would want to send for that record from IRAD and find out who married them.
