Well I solved my own puzzle.... Pierre Gelino is listed with his son Henry in the 1880 census as Peter Deleno age 76 in Shirley, Cloud County, Kansas. If you look carefully at the on line image the census taker did list his last name as Geleno but unfortunately the on line search for this record is spelled Deleno. I never knew there was a son Henry until I read this will. Thanks again. I also found the 3 young children of Pierre and Adeline in an 1870 census IL Iroquois County township Papineau. It shows Henry age 4, George age 10, and I believe Achille (misspelled) age 12. but no parents....They are in the household of an older Canadian couple Lewis and Adele Fertier??? Does anyone have a date and place of death for Pierre and/or Adeline? Thanks again, Nancy
yes I did and I thank you from the bottom of my heart! Thanks Barbara, My info matches yours. I am still adding to my information on this line and the Sanche line. As you know I am related by way of Octave Gelino who was the sister of Peter, Hubert, etc. She married Aurel/Orel Sanche. I have finally found the connection that solves the puzzle of when and how Aurel and his sister Adele migrated to Kankakee. Please let me know if this is of interest to you. I have just gone to your website where you have posted census records for Peter Gelino. The Peter Gelino listed in the 1880 Census (pt. 1 & 2) in Kankakee is the son of Pierre Gelineau. This Peter Gelino was married to Anna Bastien. They are the aunt and uncle of my grandfather. Sounds good to me. Many of the names are hard to understand. I did an advanced search on the 1860 census for Kankakee county, Illinois, leaving the surname and first name blank. I just asked for all white males born in Canada that lived in Kankakee county in 1860. There were 988 of them. I then had them ordered in the list by given name alphabetically. All whose name started with an 'E' would be on the same page or two. Remember that these are all indexed by someone unfamiliar with many of these 'foreign' names from almost illegible script. Here are the given names that start with an 'E' in the index Just for an example. I can guess at a few of the original spellings, but will have to leave others as is. Ebro BRUNO aged 50 (?) Ebro BRUNO aged 22 (?) There are 9 men with the given name of Edward. Egnes MANOR aged 22 (Ignace) Egzet JURANT aged 27 (?) Elair TOWNSEND aged 43 (?) Elam RASSETT aged 30 (?) 5 men named Eli and one Elie and one Eloi Elmer MARCOTT Emgele RENEAU aged 38 (?) Enos ROSETTE aged 60 (I have seen this one to be from Ignace) Eppollet BRASSAUX age 21 (?) Hello, I'm new to the St. Anne mailing list. I've been working on my family history, many of whom came from St. Anne - and have been trying to figure out how to correctly spell a name that has really got me stumped. The name appears three times in my family tree - however, the spellings that I have come across are all radically different, and it is an unusual name: Ulger/Eugere/Euchère. It is a man's name - two of my family bore this name as their "middle" name, one as the "first" name. Has anyone ever come across this name before in their family histories? Does anyone have an opinion about the correct spelling? My guess is that spelling #1 - Ulger - can't be correct. Spelling # 3 - Euchère - seems the most "French" sounding . The spelling Ulger came from Fr. Chiniquy's baptismal records, though, while the other spellings came from census records, which might be less reliably authentic. Of course, maybe they are really three different names altogether. I would greatly appreciate the thoughts of anyone on the mailing list. Thanks - John Farnen (descendant of André Changnon, St. Anne, IL)
From a small San Francisco newspaper, a lenghty article beginning on page 1) "More Than A Dry Bone "St. Anne Comes to Sacremento "St. Anne, the mother of Mary (and Jesus' grandmother), has come to Roseville; but not all of her, obviously. While her soul rests in heaven, and her relics are scattered here and there, a part of her skull has recently come to rest at California's newest Greek Orthodox church, St. Anna's. "The relic of St. Anne, the "Grandmother of God," are at several places throughout the world: most of her skeleton rests in Germany, while other portions of her remains are in France, Canada, Greece, and Cyprus (her left foot). But the last place one might expect to see any part of her--much less a sizable chunk of her skull--is in one of California's fastest growing suburbs. . . ." (And no mention of the relic of St. Anne, Jesus' memère, at the world famous shrine in St. Anne, Illinois. Hmmmph!)
