Speaking of Allains, a great old St. Anne family, do you have any connection of Judy Lou Allain, b. 1940, daughter of Kenneth and of Darlene Dumontelle? Judy married my cousin Edward Paul Beaupre. They are now retired, still living on their farm outside St. Anne. --bob s.
Going thru my piles of stuff, I have just come across about 50 musty pages photocopied many many years ago, entitled Historical Sketch of the Parish of St. Anne and Its Noted Shrine, by Rev. Z.P. Berand, Pastor, 1923. It covers mainly the post-Chiniquy period, and includes the Academy before and after the fire. The interesting text is legible, but the many pictures are not of good quality (the photocopying must be of pre-Xerox vintage). There are several pages of ads, including Beaupre's Garage (Dodge and Hupmobile) and not one but two hotels. I wonder if anyone else has a copy of this book. If not, I might type up the text and make it available in .doc format if anyone wants. Eventually. ---bob s. in monterey

I'd like to join the celebration and invite my great great grandparents, John Baptiste Ladoux and Marie Paille/Payey. I'd like to know who her parents were. I'm doing the maternal DNA thing, but since that will only give me the vague long ago wanderings of my mothers' mothers, it would be nice to hear something more specific and recent from Marie. I have a number of pictures of John, but there are none of her that I know of. It would be great to be able to bring a digital camera along and take pictures of all these people. Meant to add I have some pics of hurricane damage to our area on my website. I don't think I can add a link to it here so wrote out the address to copy. (http://www.angelfire.com/fl5/ahrenskids/index.html) http//www.angelfire.com/fl5/ahrenskids/index.html Rab

Take care. . . . After seeing the storms this year we got grazed last year. Katrina really makes you think. It takes a community years to recover after a hurricane that is not so devastating, so it will take decades for the gulf coast to be back to what it was .....if it ever can. We thought last year was pretty rough in my area, though. We live about 3 or 4 miles from the beach but on the West side of the Indian River in Palm Bay. Having that many hurricanes come through in 1 year was a little frightening and we always seemed to be on the worse side of it. Now if they send Jim Cantore we expect the worst. <g> Seriously thinking snow wouldn't be so bad after all. LOL Our window blew in in the dining room, but the roof stayed on(leaked though) so we were lucky. The boards covering the window when Jeanne came through a few weeks later came off so it made everything worse. Basically we lost our dining room stuff and a little damage to wall in kitchen. . Repairs were completed this summer so we now have dining room furniture. again--yeah! Between the 2 hurricanes before the airport or most of us got electricity back I flew up to the St. Anne area. Flew home in time to meet Hurricane Ivan in Atlanta. LOL We were the last plane to land and the first to take off after the squalls. Would never want to do that again. LOL This year I think we jinxed ourselves by thinking if we made it through Sept. we were safe. Wilma sort of grazed us with 50-75mph winds. Nothing compared to last years 125mph gusts. It damaged more trees but not structural damage. It dumped a lot of water on us in a short time which caused a lot of flooding in the area but in my town it went down fast. We are all definitely tired of hurricanes. LOL Rab
As my recently discovered cousin already invited part of my family to the table, I too will not go back so far. I think I will invite the previous generation of my Dad-Bob Allain, his identical twin, Dick Allain, and the two older brothers who have passed away- Byron and Paul, so that once again we can all sit around Grandpa and Grandma Allain's table and hear all the stories of what it was like for them growing up. I'd also like to have my cousin Ginny as well as my other recently discovered cousin, Kathye there to hear the stories too. Bon Appetit! Here is Ginny's reply to my note..........
I do believe I would invited my great grandparents George Laflamme and Corrine Dellibac. (Let it be known I would like to have them all but that might be a little crowded). My great grandfather lost his leg as a child, his granddaughter, (who was put up for adoption and the age of 5 and I found her about 4 years ago and will 90 years young Nov. 30th), told me she had heard it was from jumping off the trains and I would really like to know how that happened. Everyone have a very Blessed Thanksgiving. Paula Kankakee, Illinois

How wonderful if you could ask the nuns aboutyour mother! Perhaps someone has an idea how you might turn up more about her. I have often wondered at what time of year the Allain family first saw what would become St. Anne. . . surely not in mid-winter or a cold grey day in March! But on a soft May day, the area would have ben irresistible! Maybe we can find out now. And the families that went to Nebraska in 1868 ??? What was the allure, I wonder. Free land, maybe. The horizon. A change of scene - surely! Inquiring minds want to know. We'll want to ask. This is shaping up to be a great group! Best to all, Ginny
I guess if I were inviting guests to the Thanksgiving dinner, I would probably not go back so far. My grandparent's died when my mom was a teen so I think I might just go back that far and invite Zoe and Francis Rabideau for dinner. Since they lived just a couple houses down from the Catholic Church , I think I would also invite the nuns who worked at the school so I could find out even more about my mom and her family. My mom and her sibs just would never talk about their lives before the younger ones got out of "The Friends of the Homeless Orphanage" ...... except for the story about my mom starting school. When she showed up for school not speaking any English in 1916 or 1917, the nuns asked my grandparents to send her next oldest sister to school with her so they could learn English together and then practice at home so the family would learn English also. Ginny, Carol Anne and Listers.....I would like to join you all around the Thanksgiving table. I had few ancestors who lived in St. Anne. My gr.gr.gr.gr grandfather Michael Allain was there right at the beginning. Michel Allain was born on 18 Apr 1786 in Chambly, Quebec, Canada About 1825, Michel left Montreal, Canada, migrating to the United States by way of wagon and team. He and his family made there way to St. Anne before it was. What interesting conversation it would be to learn first hand what the wilds of this part of Illinois was like. A long with Michael Allain and his family sitting around the table, would be my gr.gr.gr. grandfather Alphonse BOUDREAU (b. 1825) and his wife Cecelia ALLAIN (b. 1827) and my gr.gr.gr. grandfather Pierre GIGUERE and his wife Marie PROVENCHER, whose children were baptized by Father and Reverend Charles Chiniquy. In 1868, the Boudreau and Giguere families left St. Anne, with a group of French-Canadians and travel by cover wagon to Dakota County, Nebraska. I can hardly wait for Thanksgiving and hear all the tales. Mary Boudreau

It just happened that a couple of Chiniquys were first in the chow line, thanks to their sponsors (Carol Anne and Ginny) signing them up early. Of course you should be there, Bob - I'm glad you are sending a BOURGEOIS or two! Please describe them for us - and tell us how you think they would react to the strange food, the modern setting, ze wine - AND a bunch of Frenchies born anywhere between 1700 and 1900? What would they be thankful for???? Best to all, Ginny
Alors, I think I'll join the Chiniquy family gathering, since my 1st cousins 2x removed, the brothers Julius and Wilfred Beaupre, married Carole Anne's 1st cousins 2x removed, the sisters Henrietta and Nelda Bourgeois, whose uncle by marriage was Émile-Gaspard Chiniquy, great-grandpapa of Carole Anne and nephew of Charles Chinquy. As Cousin Les says so well, all French-Canadians are related. I suppose all St. Annans are very related. --Bob Beaupré dit Schwarz de Monterey
Bonjour John, A couple of years back there was a plan to put the Saga of St Anne on the Kankakee Valley Genealogy Society website. I had offered to type it and e-mail it to the society but the woman from the society who was to put it on their web site got busy and the plan fell through after a small amount was done. I would gladly pick up where I left off if someone from the KVGS would be willing to put it on their web site. As far as I know, only Ardis Boone has a right to sell copies to the Saga of St Anne. I know that Ardis will read your posting and respond to you. Cheers! Ginny Crawford
Hi John THE SAGA OF ST ANNE (12-107) is available on CD from www.chiniquy.ca as is the earlier THE HERITAGE OF ST ANNE (12-106) from 1950 Chiniquy.ca contains the 100 page catalogue of the personal archive of Father Charles Chiniquy. Beyond what remains of his personal letters, documents, photos, books, artefacts, etc there are items that were collected by his family and then later by myself. Everything has been scanned and is available as JPEG images in a 22 CD set or as custom orders. Allan Pequegnat
Ardis Boone, who is on this list is where I got My "Saga of St. Anne".
Can anyone tell me if the Saga of St. Anne is available for sale, and if so, where? The Kankakee Valley Geneologic Society website has plans, I think, to put this online, but it seems like this is still in the works. As always, Thanks for your help! John Farnen
