    1. Re: [ILSTANNE] surnames of married women & List
    2. Most of the early church records I have from St Anne's & St Mary's show the mother listed under her maiden name. The baptism records also show the maiden name of the Godmother. At first, this was very confusing to me...but then it became an excellent source to verify the maiden names of the wives. It must be noted that some of the spellings are very bad. St Mary's Church Records - Beaverville Page 58 #25 Henrietta Goyette b Sept. 12, 1860 Parents Jean Bte. Goyette & Sophranie St. Pierre of St. Anne. (husband & wife) Godparents: Alexandre Cambell & Angele Goyette. (husband & wife) Wisconsin church records were also recorded in the same fashion. St Luke, Two Rivers, WI Baptism: August 28, 1851 Edwarda Emilia Alli b: August 18 1851 Parents: Baptiste Alli & Adaline Lami (husband & wife) Priest: Jos. Brunner Godparents: Adolph Alli & Julia Marcheau (sic) s/b Manseau (husband & wife) A note regarding our old list & Welcome letter: Ginny Crawford- listowner, ILSTANNE family history list wrote, " - it would be great if you could modify it to suit our new circumstances and then continue to send it out as we have new people sign up." I don't know what type of modifications can be made. It is pretty simple and straight forward. It MAY be impossible to continue with our group list of e-mail addresses, names, locations, and surnames now that we are a Roots List. We will have to see how many new members we get. Many of the Roots Lists generate a large volume of mail...and people subscribe and unsubscribe at an amazing rate. The questions asked often become repetitious. I have unsubscribed from these lists because they were filling my mailbox and offering very little information. I am also concerned how this change will affect Lee Ann's St Anne section on the KKK GenWeb site. Ginny will have to write to each new member individually and ask them to submit their surnames to Lee Ann and me. Anyone having a website will understand how time consuming it is to add or delete information on a site. Lee Ann has spent a considerable amount of time just setting up a page for us. It will be difficult for her to keep changing and uploading the information to the GenWeb server. Ardis Boone asked that we NOT send her any messages until after April 1st when she returns home...to avoid overloading her e-mailbox and old computer. Now that we are a Roots list, members will have to "unsubscribe", then "subscribe" when they return. Sorry to say Ardis, but you will come home to a mailbox full of these new ILSTANNE-L@rootsweb.com messages. St Anne is a small place, so we may not have any problems. We will have to take a wait and see attitude to see if we experience any growing pains. Audrey

    1. [ILSTANNE] NARA improvement
    2. Please read the following article from Ancestry Daily News. If you think that this is a good idea, you may tell your Senator and Representatives to please support this plan by accessing the following Web sites. You might like to pass it on to other Genealogy related Lists. Thanks, Robert Roach http://www.senate.gov/ http://www.house.gov/writerep/ ============================================================ PRESIDENT PROPOSES BUDGET INCREASE FOR NARA <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ============================================================ President Clinton has proposed a budget increase of $77,755,000 for Fiscal Year 2001 that would enable the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to renovate the original National Archives Building in downtown Washington, D.C., and advance initiatives in four major areas under NARA's Strategic Plan: ~ Improve records management in the Federal Government ~ Meet special challenges posed by electronic records ~ Expand public access to records ~ Meet storage and preservation needs of growing quantities of records. For improving government records management, the budget requests an addition of $992,000 to extend NARA's Targeted Assistance Program to Federal agencies in more regions of the country as well as in Washington, D.C. Through this partnership program, agencies with particularly severe records management needs receive priority help from NARA. For meeting electronic records challenges, the budget requests an addition of $902,000 for helping Federal agencies manage electronic records by testing guidance within NARA itself, and for adding three high-level professionals to assist with the development and implementation of an Electronic Records Archives (ERA). With our base funding plus these funds, NARA will continue working towards this ERA within the National Partnership for Advanced Computational Infrastructure. Through this partnership, the San Diego Supercomputer Center has produced prototype demonstrations for preserving large volumes of electronic records such as email messages in a relatively short time. We now need to continue research toward building an archives that can preserve any kind of electronic record in a format that frees it from the computer system in which it was created, an archives that also can meet requests for that record using a variety of tools available today and advanced technologies that will be developed for tomorrow. All this could be a major breakthrough in NARA's search for a system to accession, preserve, and provide electronic access to electronic records of the Federal Government. For expanding public access to records, the budget requests an increase of $14,516,000 for the following initiatives: ~ Improving reference services for records needed by America's veterans ~ Expanding NARA's online offerings via the Internet to customers nationwide ~ Upgrading NARA's communications infrastructure to improve service capabilities for customers and staff nationwide ~ Meeting requirements of the Administration's records declassification order, and ~ Taking custody of and beginning to process the records of the Clinton Administration in compliance with the Presidential Records Act. For meeting storage and preservation needs of growing quantities of records, the budget requests an increase of $6,528,000 to ensure the survival of veterans' records in jeopardy, make NARA's facilities more secure, and move Administration records into temporary quarters in Little Rock in preparation for the Clinton Presidential Library. The major increase proposed in the budget is $88,000,000 for the renovation NARA has been repairing of the original National Archives Building, now nearly two-thirds of a century old. The work will include correcting mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire safety deficiencies; retrofitting the Rotunda to display America's Charters of Freedom (the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights) in new encasements currently under preparation; bringing the building into full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act; upgrading storage conditions to meet modern archival standards; and providing sufficient exhibit and public-use space to accommodate increasing numbers of visitors. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Best Wishes, Juliana Smith, Editor, Ancestry Daily News Jennifer Browning, Associate Editor Please feel free to circulate this newsletter to other genealogy enthusiasts! 2. Marcel Benoit
    3. Hi folks French Canadian young women always lost their names at marriage, this rule and tradition would have been retained in Illinois. However very old women 1)sometimes died and no one knew her maiden name, only knew her husband's name.2) Perhaps he married a distant "cousine", she lost her name and took a name identical. 3) I would gather from watching the religious situation down there (I live in Quebec) at that time, that the priest may have been Irish Catholic, hence not governed by well defined church rules. Some of the Irish priests followed accepted parctices of the British Isles, naming witnesses and no mention of the parents. In the case of burials, these acts tend to be shortened when compared to a priest who studied under north American influence.4) Worse even, no one had ever seen the written maiden name as they were unable to write. These are some of the items to consider in establishing a woman's real name. 1. [ILSTANNE] migration from St. Anne, 1880s
    2. Our member Bishop Theriault of the Christian Catholic Church has kindly sent some most interesting information. It is to be found on a University of Wisconsin web-site that focuses on Wisconsin French connections. The URL is: http://www.uwgb.edu/wisfrench/library/history/oldcatholic.htm Many of the Wisconsin French came there from the St. Anne area of Illinois, so Wisconsin is a good place to look for our surnames. Here's what the site tells us: <<<<The stories of French-Canadian priest, Charles Chiniquy, and French-born priest J. René Vilatte, are an interesting and important part of Wisconsin francophone history. Associated with the Christian (Old) Catholic and Gallican Catholic religious movement, Chiniquy and Vilatte came to Wisconsin and Illinois to minister to the French-Canadian, Swiss and Belgian residents of these states. Vilatte, who had lived in Namur, Belgium and who spoke wallon, the French dialect of the Belgian settlers in Northeast Wisconsin, arrived in Green Bay in 1884. Churches of the Christian Catholic tradition in the area today include the Church of the Precious Blood, Bruxelles-Gardner,(established by Vilatte in 1886) and the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Green Bay (established by Father J.B. Gauthier in 1909), both now part of the Episcopal Diocese of Fond du Lac, and the Robinsonville Presbyterian Church, Robinsonville, Wisconsin. The Current Bishop of the Christian Catholic Church, Mgr. Serge A. Thériault (Ottawa, Canada) graciously contributed the following introduction to the history of the Christian Catholic church in the states of Wisconsin and Illinois. Our translation of his French text follows along with further links to Fathers Vilatte and Chiniquy. Entre 1858 et 1860, 6,200 Canadiens-français (parmi lesquels se trouvaient des Français et des Belges) ont formé l'Église catholique-chrétienne (E.C.C.) en Illinois, sous le leadership du Révérend Charles Chiniquy: 375 familles à Sainte-Anne, 40 à Bourbonnais, 100 à Kankakee, 125 à Chicago, 30 à Petites-Îles, 50 à Momence, 35 à Middleport, 20 à Sainte-Marie, 15 à l'Érable, 16 à Barren, 50 à Ava et 30 à Châteauville. Réf. Rev. Baird, The French Canadian Mission in Illinois, AFCU, 1860, p. 3. Bristol, Atlas of Kankakee, 1883, p. 21. -------------------- Between 1885 and 1860, 6,200 French-Canadians, French and Belgians formed the Christian Catholic Church (CCC) in Illinois, under the leadership of the Reverend Charles Chiniquy. This included 375 families in Sainte-Anne, 40 in Bourbonnais, 100 in Kankakee, 125 in Chicago, 30 in Petites-Îles, 50 in Momence, 35 in Middleport, 20 in Sainte-Marie, 15 in Érable, 16 in Barren, 50 in Ava, and 30 in Châteauville. (Reference: Rev. Baird, The French Canadian Mission in Illinois, AFCU, 1860, p.3.) In 1860, the CCC joined the Presbyterian Church of Chicago, and later the Canadian Presbyterian Synod. Baptismal, marriage and death records were compiled by Mrs. Ardis M. Boone [an ILSTANNE list member] of Sainte-Anne, Illinois, and were published in a document entitled, Father Chiniquy's Ledger In 1883, 1,200 families that had been members of the Christian Catholic Church in Illinois, emigrated to Kansas and Wisconsin. (Reference Bristol Atlas of Kankakee, 1883, p.21). Two years later, some of these had joined French-speaking Christian Catholics (called "old Catholics" or "gallicans") from Switzerland and France, in founding an Episcopalian Synod under the leadership of Reverend J. René Vilatte. Fr. Vilatte had been sent to Green Bay on the recommendation of Father Chiniquy, who supported him by offering a series of well-received sermons in the Green Bay area in October, 1884. Fr. Vilatte was elected Bishop at an assembly in Duval (Kewaunee County, WI) in 1889. He was consecrated Bishop in 1892 in Malabar, India, in a church attached to the Eastern Patriarchate of Antioch. His successors have been: Monsignors Casimir F. Durand of Minnesota, consecrated in 1926, O'Neill Côté of Longueuil, Québec (1939-1986), and Serge A. Thériault, consecrated by Bishop Côté in 1982. My Illinois ancestors were: Narcisse L'Ecuyer (b. 1815, L'Acadie, Quebec; d. 1905, St. George, IL), married 1839 to Marguerite Le Claire (? - ?), with 10 or 11 children. I would appreciate any information or clues on the siblings and their spouses, as follows: John married Domtild Raimond; Napoleon married Mary Gadboid, he was wounded in the Civil War; Hermind married Edward Granger; Phelomene married Narcisse Granger in Kankakee, IL; Delima married Celestine Fortin; Florence; Ida married (1)Francis Graveline, also married (2) Napoleon Boudreau; Celia, a nun in the Sisters of St. Frances de Salle; Ferial (1847)--my ancestor-- married Mathilda Drolette 1866 at Manteno, IL; Auerlie (1852) died in childhood; Mary (1864) married Pierre Betournay. Beebbee is a name of a family, I think. Seems like there was a family in Watseka anyway. It is probably an area near Kankakee where the Beebee family lived.
