    1. [ILSTANNE] Cemetery headstone photos
    2. Kathye Knight
    3. While going through some of photos... I discovered that I'd forgotten about a few headstone photos that some of you may be interested in. Most of these people are not connected to my line... I just went "cemetery mad" and took a bunch of pictures. These cemeteries are all in Kansas. I'm sending only the names.... If you want to know more, let me know. If you want me to attach pictures to email... I can do that. I know many of you have been to these cemeteries already, but for those who haven't... perhaps this will help. 1. [ILSTANNE] Balthazor/Benoit
    2. Pat Hanrahan
    3. My ancestors who came from Quebec and eventually settled in Outagamie Co., WI. I recently learned that they both had relatives in the St-Anne area. They were: Charles BALTHAZOR (son of Martin BALTHAZOR and Sophie Hebert of St-Mathias,Rouville,QC) and: Domatilde/Mathilda Benoit (daughter of Charles Benoit & Marie Morin of St-Luc,St-Jean,QC) They would have been married sometime in the 1840's, somewhere in the USA. Does anyone have any information on these families? Or know of where I might look for a marriage of this family in Illinois? Thanks, --Pat Hanrahan hanrahan@teleport.com

    1. Re: [ILSTANNE] PARISHES AND SITE MAP
    2. Marcel Benoit
    3. Hi you all In regards to the question below, St Jean I. O. would most likly be isle D'Orleans near Quebec City. This parish date from 1688. Upstream on the the St Lawrence to Montreal then south inland on the Richelieu River is St Joseph de Chambly which was opened a bit later in 1706. Boundry did not change its something like 200 miles apart. As a rule, those that settled at Quebec City and the Island of Orleans (1700) went inland to the Beauce/Bellechasse/Dorchester (1800) areas and then took the Canada road to Maine. Bob Chenard has quite a site on this. "The French Connection" Those who arrived to Montreal (1700) went inland to Chambly, or east to Vercheres then up the Richelieu River (1750) to populate this valley. Of course some went west up the St Lawrence. Those families in the Vercheres & St Denis, areas then often migrated to the St Hyacinthe areas.(1780) About 1830 the Chambly and St Hyacinthe folks started going to the Eastern Townships which is where I live. About 1860, with developing train connections, lots went to the New England Textile mills. As early as 1838, folks were leaving Chambly and going upstream to Chicago. Marlene Simmons has a good map of the part of the areas your ancestors left. Take a look at her maps at http://www.virtuel.qc.ca/simmons/acceuil.htm And if you can manage French this is the place to go http://www.toponymie.gouv.qc.ca/default.asp Ths government site is only in French and is even difficult for a native Marcel ---------- > From: Becky Hatton <Bhatton@hplsck.org> > To: ILSTANNE-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [ILSTANNE] PARISHES AND SITE MAP > Date: March 21, 2000 7:23 PM > > > And especially for Marcel Benoit: > > Marcel, I just discovered this www site last eve. 1. [ILSTANNE] BONVALLET
    2. Hello everyone! I am Ken Bonvallet. I saw a thread on my name on this discussion group and decided to join. My great grandfather was Pierre A. Bonvallet, who settled in St. Anne in the 1860's. He was in various businesses, such as wine, asparagus, and tomatoes. His company PA Bonvallet's Sons, is still in business, now dealing in gardening supplies. Pierre was not French-Canadian, having emigrated directly from France. The thread asked for information about Albert Bonvallet. Albert was a son of Pierre and my grandfather's brother. For more information about the family, please visit the Bonvallet Family website at freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com. For the person interested in Albert, I am in contact with one of his grandchildren. I would be happy to pass a name and address along to him to see if he wants to correspond. There are two family questions I am interested in: First is finding Pierre's roots in France. I know he was from Vitry le Francois. However, Bonvallet is a fairly common name in France. I correspond with a Bonvallet who is apparently unrelated. Second, there is a famous Chilean soccer player, Eduardo Bonvallet. I wonder if we are related. I hope I can contribute to this group.

    3. And especially for Marcel Benoit: Marcel, I just discovered this www site last eve. The infor on the parishes are great but the Site Map for the Parish Location - is very vague - no details - especially looking from the USA and KS and since my HATTON/CHARTIER/SHARKEY lines have not been exposed to the French/Canadian/Catholic influence since my great great grandmother's childhood. My first question and only one at this time - when I viewed the map for Chambly and for St Jean I.O. - the map looked the same. Is St Jean I.O. the older parish and was replaced with Chambly, or did boundary lines change? 3. hi folks, Exactly my thoughts also. In Quebec we need to this information to find where some of the families immigrated. After the 1850s, French Canadians immigrated west to Ontario and much more to the New England textile industry. Very little has been done concerning Illinois. It was by joining the St Anne groupe that I discovered this fairly considerable migration. When I joined the group, I made an offer which still open.If you have a couple, husband and wife, and need a marriage in Quebec, let me know and I will try to find the act. I must limit my offer to marriage acts as other BS research would use up too much time which I need for my own projects. Incidently I have just about enough information on the Saga of St Anne book, would appreciate if someone could give me the postal address of the author. the rep in Quebec Marcel Benoit ---------- > From: VCrawf@aol.com > To: ILSTANNE-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [ILSTANNE] Indiana Databases > Date: March 20, 2000 10:47 PM > > In a message dated 3/20/2000 12:18:49 PM Pacific Standard Time, > NiteOwl226@aol.com writes: > > << We may be able to trace amost ALL of the early St Anne families. 3. I am not sure if any of the French-Canadian families that moved to Benton County did so because of Father Chiniquy. Prior to 1871 there were no railroads running thru Benton County. Since this would cause a long trip to market there probably was not a great interest in the land there. Once the railroad came thru the county Benton County farmland became more desirable. Plus the railroad now had land for sale. I may be wrong about this but I believe that Fowler was built in the early 1870's also because/by the railroad. Richard Graveline

    1. Re: [ILSTANNE] Fowler, Benton County, IN
    2. According to an article in the Benton Review "Fowler was named after Moses Fowler of Lafayette, who owned the land on which the town was located and thousands of acres around it. It was platted October 26, 1872." >From the book: Benton Co. filled up with people when the east-west railroad through Boswell started operating in 1871 and the northwest-southeast railroad through Fowler started operating in 1874. The great railroad decade of Benton Co. was in the 1870s. It boosted the population from 5,000 to 11,000 by 1880, caused all the towns in the county except Oxford to begin and grow. All the towns and villages had depots, pens to load out cattle and hogs; some had elevators powered with steam. In 1883 a new railroad came through Benton Co from the south through Oxford, Swanington, Barce, Lochiel and Wadena. It was dismantled in 1946. In 1908 a new railroad went through Dunnington, Freeland and Sheff. It carried Benton County's first 100 car grain train from the Free elevator. Until WWII nearly everyone was a farmer, someone in business to serve mostly farmers or someone living there who had been connected with farming. Most were entrepreneurs, few depended on wage income. The above is from the book. I guess the farm land was the big draw before the railroad as my family went to Fowler in approximately 1850. Karen

    2. There's going to be a gathering of the Denault clan in Kankakee on the 8th and 9th of April to exchange genealogy info. I'm putting together a book and plan to donate it to the KKK library. Anyone and everyone is welcome. If you want more info just let me know. Karen

We may be able to trace amost ALL of the early St Anne families. I wonder what the 1860 Census head count was and how many of these families are represented by our group members.? Several of our members had not accumulated enough genealogy data to contribute their family notebooks to the KVGS and Kankakee Library last September. Now that we have the IL Marriage Index, KKK burials, and other great resources on-line more of these families may have come together or even been completed. Our members might like to start assembling notebooks to be donated. It is a great way to preserve your family history and help other researchers. I'm sure one of our members who belongs to the KVGS would accept your notebook by mail and hand deliver it to the library if you live too far away to visit. Audrey

    3. Hi Audrey, Yes, there is a place that I found several marriages in my family in Benton & Newton Counties, IN. Benton County is where Fowler & Earl Park are located. The site is: http://www.familytreemaker.com/glc_deny.html However, it is a "pay for play" site and will cost you $79.99 per year or $9.99 per month. They have 2403 databases (& growing every week) that are rare books, which include the above counties birth & marriage records. Newton County is directly opposite Iroquois County, IL & Benton County is directly south of Newton. My paternal g-g-father 2nd marriage to a gal who was "most Indian" was in Fowler and his mother died in Earl Park, but they both lived and were buried in Beaverville, IL. What was the attraction?? 2. Bonjour, everyone! As always, I am amazed at the interesting and valuable information this list unearths from its so-assiduous subscribers! I myself had no idea of an Indiana connection for the St. Anne area French, and find this recent exchange most fascinating. In fact, not sop long ago I didn't know anything about the St. Anne French having gone to Kansas and other western states - silly me, I guess I thought they all pretty much stayed in St. Anne - although now I think of it, there were two Chiniquy brothers who went to Minnesota. I guess I should have known. Knowing that a number of the families went to Indiana should help us find some thought-to-be-lost relatives - just as some of our list have found family in Kansas and elsewhere, using clues developed through first our St. Anne interest eMail group and now though this RootsWeb list. It's exciting! So many thanks and cheers to all, Ginny List Admin - ILSTANNE-L@rootsweb.com VCrawf@aol.com Virginia E. Crawford

    3. A vague family story reported that my gggrandfather Moses LaFountain went to Fowler because of "some religious ruckus" involving Fr. Chiniquy. He may have remained Roman Catholic (his son Lewis is buried in the Catholic cemetery near Fowler). Could there have been a group emigration from IL to IN connected with the reaction and unrest surrounding Fr. C's activities? I know my family was divided over religious issues for generations. 1. Re: [ILSTANNE] ST. Anne, IL to Fowler, Benton Co., IN
    2. My family (Goyette) moved to Kentland, IN , about 10 miles NW of Fowler, in 1954 and remained there for many years. I was not aware of a FC presence in that area until my father discovered a DeMeers (sic) family there who were part of the St.Anne group ; that was around the late 1960's. The towns are all small, so we knew the kids in all the surrounding towns. Everyone had regular Anglo-Saxon names except me. I do remember reading about the roundhouse in Earl Park, but it was non-existent by 1954. No one seemed to work for the railroad, but Fowler had a small factory and, of course, the farms on which most everyone worked. After hearing of the moves to Benton County, I, too, have wondered why.
