It was for future demographic study. The original project resulted in a series of 47 volumes which are exact reproductions of the church acts in computer format, giving records up to 1765. This was not intended as a genealogy research tool, but it does replace microfilms, and a good way to read a microfilm if the handwriting is not clear. This series is known as the PRDH. About 4-5 years ago, the project was extended to cover the up to 1799, it was published in CD format which did not work as well, and then extended to Internet suscription. This extension will not be published in book form, because of cost and quantity estimated at 600 or more volumes. In 1983 René Jetté, part of this project published his book which ends in 1730. It is in family groups using the PRDH data plus historic and notary marriage contracts. A bit like Tanguay but very accurate. This book is still available. The Un. Mtl has no intention of telling anything else, only BMS plus census if applicable. This information is very available and fairly complex as parishes grew rapidly after the British conquest. French Canada had a moto, "La revenche du berceau" (The revenge from the crib) while the English tried to out populate and out vote Quebecers by immigration from England. ((It also helped to take land squatters off the farms to allow the cultivation of sheep for the textile industry there)). By mid 1850's French Canadians were allowed to immigrate freely to New England and IL, there was no attempt to retain these in Canada. In a 100 years 1860-1960 Quebec lost 6,000,000 people which is the same population today. Parishes are tricky and the only solution is a good map and a suitable book. The Un. of Montreal has a companion volume "Inventaire des Registres Paroissiaux Catholiques du Quebec 1621-1876" (1990) ISBN 2-7606-1526-X. That is a must reference 352 pages only in Fench. Provides all details needed about microfilms and church records. Oh yeas the book has maps inside for each period under study telling what parishes are in established. Becky: Hi again - tried www.genealogie.unmontreal.ca without success. Do I have it correct? Thanks Karen ----- Original Message ----- From: Becky Hatton <Bhatton@hplsck.org> To: <ILSTANNE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, 21 March, 2000 5:23 PM Subject: [ILSTANNE] PARISHES AND SITE MAP And especially for Marcel Benoit: Marcel, I just discovered this www site last eve. The infor on the parishes are great but the Site Map for the Parish Location - is very vague - no details - especially looking from the USA and KS and since my HATTON/CHARTIER/SHARKEY lines have not been exposed to the French/Canadian/Catholic influence since my great great grandmother's childhood. My first question and only one at this time - when I viewed the map for Chambly and for St Jean I.O. - the map looked the same. Is St Jean I.O. the older parish and was replaced with Chambly, or did boundary lines change? Hi Audrey, Jim says to type OCR software into your browser search window for info on what you need to purchase for your scanner. Most new scanners come with the needed software. Also, see Mechele's (Skeleton Closet) message. And Dave's. Audrey, The way PaperPort works is this: a) Scan the printed page as you would a photo or anything else b) Then drag the scan image to the Word icon in the window c) the Word application opens with your document just as edit-able & saveable as if you typed it. d) With multi-pages you may have to copy & paste to merge everything into 1 doc --Jim & Bev are right...The buzzword descriptor is OCR for Optical Character Recognition...S/W like OmniPage Pro can even do graphics or columns of #'s into Excel for example. If it was sent to you as a graphic (like a JPG or BMP) then I don't know how to do that -- I don't think you can change a scanned graphic document into text. The person who sent you those 3 pages would need to scan it in as text then send it to you and you could then open the text document in Word or whatever word processing program you have then copy and paste into your NOTES section of Family Tree Maker -- that's what I do. Did that make any sense?? Mechele In a message dated 4/9/00 1:20:20 AM Central Daylight Time, NiteOwl226@aol.com writes: << I recently received 3 scanned pages. << Saving it as a Word document saves it as if it were typed from scratch. If you need some help -- I'd be more than willing to help. >> I recently received 3 scanned pages. I would like to put the data into my Family Tree program but haven't had the time to retype it all in. Can you tell me how to save it as text....I didn't even know you could do that and I've been on computers since the 1970's. Audrey
Thanks, LeeAnn
Really looking forward to the completed work "The Saga of St Anne". On-line histories really help long distance researchers in between personal visits. Just for a by the way: There is scanning software available now that will easily scan a page of written text directly into a Microsoft Word document... We just got a new scanner at work a week or so ago. It's fast & easy & it isn't a zillion bucks, probably abt $100 for scanner + s/w. The make of the scanner is Visioneer which comes with PaperPort (looks like only $80 for both according to their website): http://www.visioneer.com/dynahome.html There may be some touch-up editing required depending on the quality of the originals. So far we've had pretty good luck. Hope this helps. Dave H. However, you can scan text from a book and save it as text -- in Word Format !!!! I do this very often at work and it saves me tons of time. Saving it as a Word document saves it as if it were typed from scratch. If you need some help -- I'd be more than willing to help. Glad to hear the SAGA will be on the site. A question--instead of typing, is it possible to scan the book, pictures and all, for posting on the site? Seems like it would save time. Re: A question--instead of typing, is it possible to scan the book, pictures and all, for posting on the site? Seems like it would save time. Scanning does not produce a very good screen image. It would also take up a huge amount of space on the server. I have a copy of a one page letter that was scanned. It takes up 42,139 KB. The same letter in a Word.doc format only requires 36 KB. Typing the text, then putting in only scanned photos is really the best way to go. Text will also load on the site much faster than scanned data. We often have to wait for the graphics to load even with a super fast modem. Many thanks to Carol Anne for typing her little fingers to the bone so we can all have The Saga of St Anne on-line. That was a huge job and we appreciate all of her time and hard work. She had sent me a sneak preview several weeks ago. I was having a hard time keeping it under wraps until the official announcement was made. Audrey
Many thanks for the hours of work you, LeeAnn, Marcia and Carol Anne, have put into this website. This is a wonderful book with lots of information for the people researching St. Anne. Elaine in Allyn, WA
Thanks to LeeAnn, Marcia and Carol Anne! This will be a treasure for all of us! Your work is much appreciated. Also... thanks to those who worked on the original book a number of years ago. (Lois Meier, etc...) I'll continue to check the sight for new information. It is working fine right now! Carol Anne. I write on the topic of drug (including alcohol )abuse and the family, so I'm interested in the Manual of Temperance in English. Do you know if it is available currently? It would be fascinating to see what was being said about the issue in the mid 1800s. Bill LaFountain P.S. Do you know anything about Fr.Christopher LaFontaine? He could be my distant cousin! ----- Original Message ----- From: <Chiniquy@aol.com> To: <ILSTANNE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, April 06, 2000 3:00 PM Subject: [ILSTANNE] The SAGA URL > Bonjour Everyone, > > The url that Ginny sent, http://www.kvgs.org/stannetwp/saga/ ,is a good one > and worked just fine for me. > > The Saga of St. Anne > > Be sure to copy and paste so that you will have the address correct or click > on the blue letters above. > > There is still a huge amount to be added to the web site, but at least we > have a start and it is out there for everyone to enjoy.
