    1. Re: [ILSTANNE] Churches
    2. << Was the alter lit at St. Rose? >> We got there rather late at night and the church was dark and locked. As we walked around the outside a car pulled up and asked what we were doing. The man in the car turned out to be the Asst. Pastor and was very interested when we told him we were a genealogy group attending the St Anne Pumpkin Fest. He asked us to wait a few minutes, while he parked his car, and entered the rear of the church. He unlocked the front doors, and turned on all of the lights. Then he spent a considerable amount of time showing us everything, and talking about church history, etc. We couldn't have planned it better. I have belonged to a rather modest (by comparison) Lutheran church my entire life. The building is only 60 years. I must say, I fully appreciate the beauty of these old ornate churches. Their statuary is lifesize and look as if they could reach down and touch you. Audrey

I, and others, have had a great deal of trouble in trying to get any help at all as far as their records are concerned. Records of several grandparents and gr. grandparents and gr. gr. grandparents are contained at St. Rose. A few years ago, my husband and I went to the office to try to get the records of my grandparents marriage. I had the date and everything. We were met with extreme rudeness on the part of the individuals working there, and we left unable to believe we had been treated so badly because of such a simple request. When we arrived home, I wrote a letter to Bishop Imesh in Joliet. It was only after a letter was sent to St. Rose from the Bishop's office, that I received from St. Rose the information I had requested. I've not been in any hurry to try and find any further information from that church. It's a real shame, because as Brenda mentioned, they have some very old records. Like Brenda, I too, have had much more success and have encountered nothing but friendly and helpful people in the churches of Quebec. I can only hope St. Rose has changed its attitude.......because what I ran up against was certainly far from a Christian attitude. Myrna

    2. I have a complaint about St. Rose's, though. Yes, they may have a nice church, but they are VERY reluctant to help genealogists. My great-grandfather, his parents and his grandparents are buried there, but sadly the grandparents don't have headstones, so I can't find information through the cemetary on when they died. I thankfully saw a snip in the KVGS newsletter about a probate notice on my gr-gr-gr-grandfather's estate, and so I was able to find out when he died and that he is buried at St. Rose, but I wasn't able to get a copy of the death record until one day a new woman was working in the office and she was very kind and photocopied the death record in the books. But I still have not been able to find out when gr-gr-gr-grandmother died. >From what I understand they won't do the research without a substantial amount of money (per person or per record), they won't let a genealogist go through the old books because they're "falling apart" and they have "private information" in them. Yet, they won't do anything to preserve what information is in the books, either -- and that is one of the oldest churches in Kankakee County -- they have records predating most of the County records. I don't know if they have changed in their attitude, but that has been the attitude I ran up against when trying to do research on my Kankakee ancestors. I know more about my ancestors in Québec than I do about them in Kankakee! Sorry for venting, Brenda

    2. I was really impressed with St Rose of Lima in Kankakee. Dave King took our St Anne group on a tour last Sept and St Rose was just spectacular. If any of our group are in the area it is a magnificent "don't miss" church to add to your list of places to visit. I am always amazed at the old churches that were built without modern construction equipment. They really surpass any of the new modern churches that are being built. The domed ceilings, woodwork, stain glass, etc are breathtaking. I agree with RAB (Anita) that it gives you a feeling of awe to know your ancestors had attended these churches over 100 years ago. Even the quaint little country churches have a real charm. Audrey

    2. Audrey and anyone else interested in pictures of St. John's Catholic Church in St. Anne, I still have pictures in my camera from my trip to Illinois in March. I took almost a whole roll at the church. When I get them dceveloped I will post the best or e-mail to anyone that wants them. The church is really beautiful. It was really cool walking down the aisle that you know your parents, your grandparents, and your great-grandparents walked. Rab
