2. I am so happy that several of you have written to say you FOUND relatives on the site. GREAT!!!!! Re: What can I be doing wrong? Dear NiteOwl - please advise! Try leaving some of the fields blank. My grandfather's brother had his mother listed as : Schamhorn BUELL GEORGE 05/20/1880 SCHAMHORN BUELL M ILLINOIS LOS ANGELES 06/12/1952 72 yrs Nothing came up when I input Schermerhorn which was his mother's name. It was spelled wrong in the database. Also, the church records show he was born in 1875 NOT 1880. We should be used to rotten spelling by now. Just using the last name and various spelling may take quite awhile....but it is well worth the effort if you find a missing relative. I forgot to add the companion database CA Birth Records Records: 24596236 Surnames: 984961 Data contains records from 1905 thru 1995 http://userdb.rootsweb.com/ca/birth/ It's really surprising they give dates to 1995...guess CA has no privacy issues. I ran a friend of mine's name and came up with the birth of all three of his children in the 1980's. This is almost as much fun as having the IL Marriage Index and the Kankakee Cemetery Index on-line. Wish CA would put their marriages on-line too. George Buell had two wives and three children I'd love to find dates on. Do know their mother's maiden names, so I ran out of time viewing all of the pages. The birth index asks for the mother maiden's name, but not the father's name. If I found the marriages, I could probably find the children. Audrey

2. Try leaving out some info, because the person who gave the information may not have had all the information correct. Search using just his first and last name, and see what comes up (unless his last name is SMITH or JONES or ANDERSON)

1. [ILSTANNE] Clarification
2. Hi listers: I am soooooooooooo embarrassed. I think I need to clarify what I said in my first e-mail so no one thinks that I intended to be mean to Richard. My sister started this thing in our family where we all call each other "animals" based on some movie she once saw. Anyway, we all call each other that, and I was just being "cute" as I thought the mail was going to my mother. I never intended to insult or hurt anyone's feelings. This will NEVER happen again. I know this sounds incredibly dumb, and it is. Please take it for what it was, a silly mistake. Michelle :-( p.s. feel free to refer to me as an animal anytime you wish.

2. Elaine, I, too, picked up on the Ducharme name. What I had not picked up was your last name and the name of my great-grandmother-Eliza Fregeau Ducharme! I am not sure how I came to the Fregeau spelling, but these must be the same family. My grandmother, Emma Ducharme, was the daughter of Philip and Eliza Ducharme. I have a photo of Eliza, her brother August, and Eliza's children with spouses (my aunt told me the photo must have been taken after Philip's death). So-brothers Philip and August must have married Fregeau-Frigone sisters? Eliza was a full-blooded Indian. I have not researched much into this family; maybe you have?? I will scan my photo to you, soon. Bev Goyette Mieure St.Louis EEFrigone@aol.com wrote: > The postcard of St. Anne's Church was a surprise. When it said Made in > Germany, L. 3. The following quote refers to the St Pierre that Bob Gieber mentioned on Friday. "Joseph St PIERRE - Born at St Anne d'Yamachiche, diocese of Three Rivers, PQ, Canada, in 1842. Came to Bourbonnais in 1863 with his parents, Francois and Euphrosine nee Bellemare..." This parish in Canada might be worth checking out. This you already know but beware of all the Honore St. Pierres. Just a few miles south of Kankakee in the parish of St John the Baptist in L'Erable, Illinois a Honore St Pierre was born July 9 1865, the son of Honore St Pierre and Julie Grenier. 1. Re: [ILSTANNE] ST.Pierre's
2. Hi Jan and everyone, I haven't posted to this list in a long time, so let me reintroduce myself. I'm Susan Vaughn Turner. My French Canadian ancestors came through Kankakee Co, and ended up in Riley, Clay, Cloud, and Washington Counties in KS. Surnames include: PERREAULT / PERRAULT / PARO, MARTEL, and MARSAN dit LAPIERRE / MARSAN / MARSANDT / MARSANT I'm responding to Jan's query concerning the St Pierre's. I don't know if this has been mentioned in the ongoing discussion (as I said, I haven't been active on this list for several months) but Jan's St Pierre's may have originally been Marsan dit Lapierre. The descendents of this line used many variations of Marsan and Lapierre as well as St Pierre when they shortened the name. Perhaps you should try looking under some of the alternatives. I've received a lot of assistance in my search for Marsan dit Lapierre ancestors through l'Association des descendants de Pierre Marsan dit Lapierre at www.genealogie.org/famille/marsan-lapierre/marsan.htm . Jean-Guy Marsan, the president of the organization, has been extremely helpful. There is a fee to become a member, but it's reasonable. Well, just thought I'd touch base with you all. Take care, Sue :)

2. It is good to hear first-person accounts, good and bad, about the reception accorded genealogical researchers at these various churches. We need to be candid about our experiences so as to inform others and, eventually perhaps, to effect change where it is needed to inform family historians. Don't forget, though, that sometimes it is only one cranky underpaid person who sets the tone for a facility - and maybe the facility itself doesn't know that people are being turned away or that an employee is rude or disinterested. (Sometimes they call me Pollyanna!) Let's keep on exchanging experiences and information - there's strength in numbers. Salut to all from, Ginny Admin- ILSTANNE-L VCrawf@aol.com Carmel Valley CA USA

2. << I have a complaint about St. Rose's, though. Yes, they may have a nice church, but they are VERY reluctant to help genealogists. >> I wrote to them three years ago and received a short note verifying the death: Letter from St. Rose Church May 1997 says: "Funeral Record found on Adeline Lami - spouse of Jean-Baptiste Allie. Died 2/17/1905. Funeral 2/20/1905 by Rev. A.D. Granger, Pastor of St. Rose of Lima Church, Kankakee, IL." Burial was verified at St Rose Catholic Cemetery. They were not able to locate her husband's burial records...from 1870's. I was told the cemetery records had been stored in the local bank vault and the bank burnt destroying the records. Audrey
