The CD should work fine Apple, if you have a word processor that can convert MS Word files, and you have an image viewer, such as Internet Explorer, for the image files. Cindy -- For future reference, when writing a query it helps a LOT if you can put years in. For instance, you state you found Prudence as a widow in the Kansas Census -- what year(s)? Also, when was Henry born? Thankfully, there IS a reference book which condenses the French-Canadians which appeared in the Kankakee and Iroquois Counties Censuses in 1850, 1860, 1870 & 1880, but if I had had to go through them all manually, it would have taken me a looooooong time. :o) I DID find a family -- I don't know if it is the correct family, though, because I have no years to compare it with. You stated that the father's name was "Norris". There is no French name of Norris, but it does sound like Narcisse which IS a French name. I also know from experience that one Anglization of the name Narcisse is "Nelson", soooooo that being said, this is what I found in "French-Canadian Families of Kankakee and Iroquois Counties, Illinois" by Rev. Albert H. Ledoux, on page 149 (in the First Edition): Under Kankakee City, 1870 ST. PETER 01936 Frank 57 day labor C[anada] Eliza 48 C. Frank 14 C. Georgiana 16 C. Nelson BENMORE 25 farm laborer C. Jane 23 C. Nelson 4 Ill. Henry 1 Ill. Apparently they lived with a St. Peter family -- I don't know if that's Jane's family, or they worked on the St. Peters' farm, it doesn't state relationship in the 1870 Census. I don't see them in the 1880 portion of Fr. Ledoux' book, but that doesn't necessarily mean they weren't in Kankakee in 1880. Don't know if this helps, but it LOOKS like your family. I just returned from Beaverville where I was allowed to digitally photograph the records from 1876 to 1908, and the burial records up to 1920. I did not go any further back than 1876 because Ardis Boone had already transcribed the records from 1856 to 1882. My plan is to transcribe these French/Latin records into English text and include the whole of St. Mary's records from 1856 to 1920, plus the digital photos, on CD-ROMs, for anyone interested in these records. I will have to charge a nominal fee for the CDs, but it will not be any more than what we have paid for these type of records in printed form from other sources. Please advise if you are interested in these records and what you are willing to pay for same. It will be some time before I complete this project and I am simply trying, at this time, to get a feel for the interest. Thank you. Les Fountain Valley, CA

Do you have any idea where i could get a copy of the book you refer to? even just to skim through it would be a big help. I did get a copy of the St. Mary's catholic church records of Beaverville that was wonderfull and goes until 1882 but i believe my family moved about 1880 and would be in the the Iroquis and Kankakee book . Thanks for your help and being so kind. Rita

Hello: Your best bet might be to find out where the four youngest children were married. If they were married in the United States, the County Marriage Register will show the maiden name of their mother (providing the register was filled out correctly). What might be an interesting note is what relation, if any, Francis Ungos might be to either of the Labbe's. He was living in their household in the 1870 Census and was listed as a blind pauper. Jack, I would gladly post it to the list, but all I have is a scan of the records. I tried to transcribe them, but I can't make out the spelling of some of the French words. I will gladly forward the scans to anyone who would like to try translating them. The scans were sent to me by a fellow researcher, Dan Joubert. He found the records on the microfilm called; "St-Athanase-de-Bleury, parish register". He copied the microfilm at the "Archives Nationales du Québec" in the city of Hull, Québec. Vernon

Hi, My French skills are nowhere close to the levels that others in this group possess, particularly in deducing writings from 150 years ago, but I'll give it a try if no one else volunteers. It seems as if your names match my own family: a Louis Demers married a Julienne Joubert, and both sides of the Demers and Joubert family were present when their 18-year old daughter Elena (Eleanore, Ellen or Lena) married Julien (Jules, Julius) Giroux on 24 Feb 1873 in St. Marys (Beaverville) Illinois. Julius and Lena were my ggrandparents.
