    3. Sherry, There was a Primitive Baptist Church called Cold Spring which was organized by 1833 or earlier, which in the latter years (1930's) had a "meeting house" about 2 miles southeast of Hanson, in Fayette County. It was also called Beck's Creek church in early pioneer days. Elder Z. S. Price was probably the last pastor. John K. Beer, Miles H. Abbott, James Beck, and others were earlier ministers there. In early years it is sometimes described in the Association minutes as being located in Shelby county. I have not tried to find a deed yet, but surely one could be found, at least for the Hanson site. I would love to find a picture or the records. I have quite a few Beck's in my database. There was a church called Mount Olive in the early minutes of the Association (Kaskaskia) but I haven't figured out where it was located. There was also another church called Clear Spring which was mentioned as being in the Kaskaskia Association as early as 1836, and located in Shelby county. Guy Beck was a member of Clear Spring. He may have been a member of Cold Spring or some of these others, as the members tended to move and organize new churches in those days, close to their homes. (Putting up another log church wasn't so expensive). The Shelby county churches I have listed at present are: Okaw, near Shelbyville (4 miles northeast, in Sec. 13), org. in 1827. Hopewell, in Shelbyville (org. in 1828/29) New Hope (location not determined) org. by 1830. Cold Spring (as above) Clear Spring (as above) Union, at Pleak's Corners, org. in 1844 in Flat Branch township, first in a log building on land owned by James Tolly, and later in a frame meeting house built on land donated by James R. Scribner in 1868. Both were in Sec. 12. Center, location unknown. Wabash, location unknown. I really know very little about most of these compared with other counties. We do have part of the records of the Union church in our collection. And a history of Okaw church which lists most of the earliest members names. 3. ROBERT, The Cold Spring should be located in Cold Spring Twp. It's an actual spring. Makes the most sense to me, anyway. Wakefields, Crockers, and others (most my relatives) first settled there. Not sure about their religious affiliation. The town of Williamsburg, which has disappeared was an important town in the area on a hill, and Mount Olive is literally on the road to old Williamsburg. Mount Olive is in Dry Point Township. Think the Beck's Creek Church was in Bowling Green Twp., but I am not positive. I have gone back to my earliest McDaniel/King records, and I do know that while I cannot find my ancestor's name on the "Traveling Church" records of 1781 or therabouts, he left Spots Co VA about 1782, owned land jointly with Benjamin Craig and his wife near the Forks of Elkhorn Church, etc. Moved to Bracken County. Everything suggests that my relatives were Separate Baptists. I understand that most Separate Baptists are now considered Regular Baptists. I am not a church historian, so this is somewhat confusing to me. It's particularly confusing, since I also have distant in-law connections to the Fee family, and John Gregg Fee was a famous KY churchman but not a Baptist! Finally, some of my Baptist relatives intermarried with German Brethren (aka Dunkards) who were really Baptists. I do not live in Shelby County. I live just outside Chicago. I do have photos of the cemetery at Mt. Olive. It's also known as Sellers/Bryant Cemetery. I could also send you a list of those buried there--the cemetery has been transcribed several times, and I copied almost all for myself one time, because nearly half the burials are for my relatives. (Elza King who was clerk of Beck's Creek not buried there. I'd have to look for him.) Maybe you will find some names on other lists. A caveat, however. A couple of those in the cemetery were definitely Methodists, but they apparently wanted to be with kin. I'd be happy to look up the references to Beck's Creek Church and copy here, if that would be of interest to you. If yes, please be patient, but I will get to it ASAP.
