Doris, According to the Disciples of Christ history, some of your relatives were allegedly and regrettably buried in unmarked graves near Sullivan, Ill. (Moultrie County). http://www.bible.acu.edu/stone-campbell/Biogs/bastiann.html Virtually every denomination has an archive somewhere. an excellent resource for Disciples is at: http://www.mun.ca/rels/restmov/restmov.html The project is housed at Memorial University of Newfoundland. I would recommend contacting the librarian there and asking if they can help. It is possible there are Bastian Papers or a Bastian archive either by or about him. Diaries, newspaper clippings and other personal papers archived there. If not, they may know someplace more local where they might be. To find out, go to this link: http://www.library.mun.ca/ You'll see an "Ask a Librarian" link. Explain what you are looking for and they'll let you know if they have it. Typically you'll be told how much information there, how much it will cost for them to xerox it and send it to you, and whether you are willing to pay the cost. Some libraries will also charge a search fee. The fees are actually quite minimal in most cases and, depending on where you are, would certainly cost less than a trip to Newfoundland!! Best of luck to you. Judy Rosella Edwards - The Jasper Douthit Project http://www.ecolitgy.com/JLD/ --- "doriswaggoner@juno.com" <doriswaggoner@juno.com> wrote: > > I'm trying to track when N.S. Please forward information to me. Linda Pollock. I live in Idaho falls Id now instead of Manteca Ca.Thank u for any help from anyone.
I'm trying to track when N.S. BASTION, sometimes spelled BASTIAN, was the minister of the Christian (Disciples of Christ) church in Shelbyville. According to his Bible, which I have, he and his wife Eunice JEWETT had a daughter Eunice, my gg grandmother, b. there Jan 31, 1863. They did not live there a particularly long time, as they had children born in Mattoon in 1959 and in Tuscola, in Douglas Co., in 1869, but all I know of their movements is the dates. I have also found in a history of the Disciples in IL that Bastion served the church in Shelbyville, but it does not give a date. I even found the 1881 History of Shelby and Moultrie Cos that is online, and it doesn't give dates. Does anyone have dates for the ministers that far back? Would the earliest Christian (Disciples of Christ)church in town have such records? Is there a genealogical society that might? According to the book, written in 1915, there was only one Disciples church there at the time. Until I have the dates, I can't prove that the reason his daughter was born there was because he was living there as the minister. (I have the same problem with the places of birth of the other two children, and the place of death of one of them.) Hoping someone can help, Doris Waggoner Seattle
Hi - Happened to have this tidbit in my files - Will check later for more - Enjoy. Eileen B. Windsor Gazette - 17 Sep 1903 - Mrs. Sarah E. Duncan, who has been visiting her niece, Mrs. Sallie Sargent, left Monday for Iowa. She has also been visiting her sister, Mrs. Amanda Worley. Mrs. Duncan has in her possession a cup cake that is 63 years old next Sunday. It was one of the wedding cakes baked for Mrs. Worley's wedding, which took place Sept. 23, 1840. Another sister was sick at the time and Mrs. Duncan a rosy-cheeked lassie scarcely dreaming of a lover put the cake away for the invalid. But before she got to eat it she died, and Mrs. Duncan carefully put it away, keeping it with jealous care ever since. The cake was baked near Elizabethtown, KY where it was kept till 1845, since which time it has made its home as follows: In Missouri, 1845-66; Illinois, 1866-82; California, 1882-84; Nebraska, 1885-95 and from 1895 to the present time at Springfield, Mass. It was also present at Mr. and Mrs. Worley's golden wedding 13 years ago. Mrs. Duncan is a well pres! erved old lady and we hope she will get to keep the cake many more years.
I am looking for information on Amanda Temple Lawson Worley. Her husband was Harvey Bigler Worley. They came to Illinois from Kentucky in the 1840s, settling first in Coles Co, then in Shelby Co between 1870-80. Harvey died in 1892. Amanda was listed in the 1910 census age 90, living with her daughter Sallie Worley Chambers Sargent in Windsor City, Shelby Co. Sally married first John James Chambers and then William Rufus Sargent. Other descendants who stayed in the Shelby Co area were Richard Thomas Worley (husband of Mary Jane Mitchell), Edna Worley Curry (wife of George Francis Curry), and Stella Worley Hamer (wife of John William Hamer). Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

Its not just historyit is also genealogy. The host of the Shelby County Trail is organizing the First Annual Jasper Douthits Lithia Springs Chautauqua Conference in Shelbyville, Ill., and environs Aug 5-7, 2004. The conference will include a tour of the original Lithia Springs Chautauqua site, now owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers. This is not just history is is also genealogy. Our reenactor, portraying Ada Kepley, who spoke at the chautauqua, is a Shelby County native who knew some of the several dozen people who owned cabins at the site. Former Attorney General Howland J. Hamlin was among those private owners. Foundations of those cabins are still visible and we will tour them. Shelbyville resident, Mrs. Belle McCann, was among a number of local residents who benefitted financially by the little bit of extra business the Lithia Springs chautauqua brought to them for a couple of week every year for decades. McCann operated a dining room to feed the hundreds of hungry campers. Local livery driver H. W. Davis was busy providing public transportation and tours of the area. William Morgan lived at the site and sold refreshments during the annual encampments. Tents were available for rent. For a small fee, residents provided housekeeping and cooking services to campers, keeping their tents clean and their tummies full during the outdoor vacations. White Ribboners from local communities formed parades on the grounds. Many local residents attended the annual chautauquas. Douthit thanked local residents Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Reeve, W. F. Nehring, Mrs. J. A. Patton, Mrs. Largent, Roe Gardner, Mrs. Gallagher, John Wilson, Mrs. J. H. White and Miss Netttie Woods along with Springfield residents James Turpin and George Lozier and all the employees and thsoe connected with the work of the meeting. More details will be announced soon, but the conference website is now online for those who might be interested in participating or in attending in 2005. http://www.ecolitgy.com/JLD/ConferenceInfo.html Enjoy! Would there be any one on the list with access to cemetery books for these 4 Townships? I am making another attempt at locating the burial spot of my 2nd G-Grandfather William Webb. William was b. abt 1816 in IN and died sometime prior to 11 August 1877 in Shelby Co. William, wife Penelope Lineback-Webb and family came to Shelby Co. from Howard Co., IN sometime between 21 March 1862 and July 1865. They were enumerated in the July 1865 State census for Okaw Twp. William is listed in court records in Okaw Twp in December 1868. He was in Household 16 in Okaw Twp on 19 October 1869 and again on 10 March 1870 - when Penelope died and was buried in Foster Cemetery in Todd's Point Twp. He bought 40 acres in Section 24 of Pickaway Twp on 9 June 1870. He married again on 27 July 1870 in Sullivan Twp, Moultrie Co., IL to Mary Jane White. They resided on the 40 acres until his death sometime prior to 11 August 1877. William's probate records are in the Shelby Co. courthouse. I feel certain his 2nd wife Mary Jane buried him somewhere in this area or possibly in a cemetery in Sullivan Twp. Moultrie Co. I made a trip to the area 4 years ago, located Foster Cemetery and found Penelope's headstone plus other Webb family. There is no listing for a William Webb being buried in Foster Cemetery. I feel one of 2 things happened: Mary Jane did not bury William close to his first wife and family in Foster Cemetery or no monument was erected for him and his burial site has been lost. Any help would be most appreciated. Regards, Bill Webb
Thanks to all who responded. I finally used an actual telephone and called someone down in Shelbyville (I live more than 100 miles away!). Turns out their website will likely be down for several more weeks due to unforeseen circumstances. But the society is definitely active! In the search for a contact at the Society, I came across last Friday's local Shelbyville Daily Union and a FANTASTIC story about excitement going on at the Shelby County Historical and Genealogical Society. http://www.shelbyvilledailyunion.com/pdfversion/10222004/page1.pdf Judy
Judy, I was just on the site a couple weeks ago, and was at the historical society 3 weeks ago and e'thing was running just fine. I suspect there's either a problem with the server, or they have it down for some reason. This has occasionally happened in the past and it always eventually "comes back".
