Good Afternoon, This seminar will be a great opportunity to learn more about our research, ask questions and network with fellow genealogists. Hope to see you there. GENEALOGY SEMINAR, hosted by Michael John Neill. Sunday, April 3 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (Lunch break Noon - 1:00 p.m.) YWCA of Alton, 304 E. Third Street $30 per person includes catered lunch / $20 per person without lunch. Call 618-465-7774 to register, space is limited. Topics Include: Interviewing Grandma and Things in the Attic This lecture will discuss techniques for interviewing relatives, including what kinds of questions to ask, how to ask (and how not to ask) questions, recording the interviewing, and more. The second half of this lecture will discuss a variety of home sources, ranging from photographs to personal papers and how to use these sources to continue your search for family history. Online Search Strategy This lecture will discuss a general online research strategy that is applicable to about just any ancestor and time period. The intent of this session is to provide the researcher with a framework to cut down on wasted online time and make the best use of their resources. Tried and Tested Tidbits Geared to researchers at all levels, this lecture discusses procedures and methods that are easy to forget and that once forgotten can significantly hinder research. Sometimes it is the little things than cause the most difficulty for the family history researcher. This lecture will provide the new researcher with ideas of things to not overlook and remind more experienced researchers of things they might have forgotten. Census Records From 1790-1930, census records are one of the sources most utilized by genealogists. This lecture will provide a summary of what is contained in census records, how to analyze them and the many ways that genealogists can now access these records, ranging from microfilm in a library to websites that bring the data directly to your own home. Michael John Neill is the Course I Coordinator at the Genealogical Institute of Mid America (GIMA) held annually in Springfield, Illinois, and is also on the faculty of Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, Illinois. Michael is the Web columnist for the FGS FORUM and is on the editorial board of the Illinois State Genealogical Society Quarterly. He contributes to several genealogical publications, including Ancestry Magazine and Genealogical Computing. -----Original Message-----

Do you know where in TN your Thomas Miller was from? And when he came to Shelby Co? I have a Sarah Miller b. in Davidson Co. 1809 who came to Sangamon Co (Springfield) in 1828 "with relatives." I have been butting my head against this brick wall for a long time. There are Millers in Sangamon Co. but none seems to be the right age to have come with her. She doesn't show up in the 1830 census, though I know she married there in 1835, so she was not the head of a household and must have been living with others. She died in 1850. I would really like to find her parentage. -- "Susan Trisler" <trisler@morningside.edu> wrote: My ggg grandfather was a Thomas Miller. He was born about 1824 in TN. He married and Elizabeth Reed 9/10/1848 in Shelby county, IL. They had children Annie, Mary, Isabella, Catherine, Antonia, Martha, Thomas, and Elizabeth. I believe they also had a son named Amos who died young. Isabella may have died in her 20's without marrying. Antonia married a Lewellyn Helton in Shelby county. Martha(my gg grandmother) married a Wesley Miller in April 1880 in Shelby county. Thomas married an Elvira Parker in Shelby county. Elizabeth married a Franklin Bentz in Shelby county. I know nothing about Annie and Mary or Catharine. Antonia and Thomas stayed in Shelby county and Martha and Elizabeth moved on to Decatur, IL(Macon county). Elizabeth Reed Miller died sometime between 1870 and 1880 and Thomas Miller sometime after 1880. I believe Wesley Miller's parents were an Andrew Miller and a Rosannah Lee. They were married in February 1850 in Shelby county. I believe Rosannah died in 1878 in Christian county. I believe Wesley had a least 1 sibling, her name being Mary. I am trying to figure out who Thomas Miller's parents were and who Andrew Miller's parents were. There was a family of Miller's( father John and son's Lowrey, Thomas, William, John, Abraham and Jesse, I believe) who came to Shelby county from TN in the 1820's and Thomas may be part of that family but I have no proof of that. If anyone else is researching Miller's in Shelby, Macon, Christian, and or Effingham county and could shed some light on my Miller's, the help would be greatly appreciated. Susan, do you have a Luther David Miller in your data? He eloped with Mary Murphy from her parents' household in Lovington, Moultrie County, and the couple were married in Piatt County, 22 Sep 1919. I have very limited information about him, but do have a few brief news clippings, including an account of the elopement. One of my cousin researchers has recorded that Luther was killed in an auto accident in or near Shelbyville, 22 Apr 1934. This source also notes that "Luther had a twin." I noticed in one census record (will find it later) that there was a Miller family living near Mary Murphy's parents in Lovington. Perhaps these Millers were related to Luther. Bob Brown
My ggg grandfather was a Thomas Miller. Sharon - Email me eileenb@consolidated.net - This is probably a different email from when we last talked. I didn't realize that you were unaware of the Flemings in Rutherford Co., TN. I have a will for Alexander Rankin of Rutherford Co., TN which states "the children of Violet Rankin, wife of Joel Fleming of Shelby Co., IL" Also a will of James Rankin of Rutherford Co., TN which also names collectively "Andy Flemming, Samuel Flemming, Franklin Frazier and Rowan Frazier". It also indicates "my half sister, Violet Flemming living in the State of Illinois." Eileen B.
