Hello Everyone, Eileen has been a wonderful help and must be a really great person for helping someone who has lost all her research. I am putting my some Nichols below if anyone has anything on them they would be willinf to share as they lived in Shelby CO. for so long I am sure they married into many other families and I hope there are some of you out there that might be willing to share as I am starting back to step 1. Thanks for any help, Barbara eor@saber.net This is right so far except it seems Thomas P. Nichols may be wrong as when he died he was married to Delinda Rhoads unless there are 2 Thomas P. Nichols and they have his wife spelled Malinda and the marraige book say Melinda. But below are some of my Nichols. also it says George Lewis is buried in Shields cemetery his death cert. says Union cemetery. Again thank you so much for all your help. Hello Everyone, Dose anyone know of this cemetery that is now the Williams cemetery that was the Britton. I could use any help you can send my way. I have Nichols and Ginger family members there when it was the Britton cemetery in Shelby Co. ILL. Barbara - I am not familiar with Old Mode or Britton Cemeteries. They do not appear on the Shelby County list. There is a cemetery inscription book with Union in it. It stated that at one time it was called Williams Cemetery. Perhaps others may know of the other two. Listed in Union Cemetery were: Charles E. Nichols and Martha A. Nichols and infants - I found these and am attaching them to this email. Listed also was William H. Nichols, 1889-1861 Hardin Nichols, 1884-1958 Gertrude Strohl Nichols [1887-1969 Johnny J. Nichols [1938 - 1956 I was rushed for time this a.m. and did not find the above four but I am sure they are there. There are a couple of newer Nichols stones which are not in the book. There are no Taylors listed other than Julia A. Taylor. If others are buried there, there are no remaining stones for them. I will not be back down to that cemetery anymore this fall but can check again in the spring, if you will remind me. I don't know where to tell you to find the others. Have you checked for a Britton cemetery in perhaps Fayette or Effingham County. I just don't recognize the name. The following http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/databases.html is a good place to check for deaths after 1916. These records can be obtained by following instructions. The records might give burial places. Anyway, I'll send Charles, Martha and infants by email. Hope these come through without too much time involved in downloading. I cut them down in size and you can enlarge them after receiving them. Good Luck - Eileen

Hi! I will be traveling through Shelby County tomorrow (Sat. 11-05-05), and would like to stop and search for some ancestor graves in or near Stewardson. I know the names and some other info., but not which specific cemeteries they are buried in. The surnames are: CARTER, SWINDLE (SWINDELL/SWINDOLL/etc.) If anyone has any knowledge of families with these surnames being buried in the Stewardson area, or anywhere in Shelby Co., for that matter, I sure would appreciate any info. on the cemetery names, and directions. (My g. grandmother was Julia Lucinda (Carter) Butler. I know that she is buried in the Smyser Cemetery, but am looking for her parents/siblings/grandparents/etc.) Thanks!
Does any one have a Rosa Nowlin (maden name Beck) maybe that married a Robertson in Fayette County,Il.?Thanks...S.Beck...
Hello, I went to your site and it is a wonderful site. I will send you a picture of the gravestone of Henry Ginger Sr. if you so wish so you can add this to your site as you don't have his. His gravestone says his Rev. war information. My ggg-grandmother Melinda Ginger Nichols isn't on your site I was really wishen you may have found her grave with the Gingers but I think she is with the Nichols somewhere in Shelby ILL. I think Melinda was their oldest or next to the oldest child of Henry and Channa Luster Ginger. I think she must have died very young but I am unable to find anything on her except her name in the marraige book. I had a friend I went to school with Annabelle PROBST,she lived with her maternal grandparents NOWLIN west of Vandalia, IL. I believe their old farm land is now under Vandalia Lake. Her grandparents were such sweet people. I have tried to find Carolyn's married name and where she lives now. If anyone can tell me I would really appreciate finding her now. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Vh.2ADE/883.1 Message Board Post: I have a connection to the Miller family in the 1800's of Shelby County, Illinois. My GGG Grandmother was Milly Reed Green a sister of Elizabeth Reed Miller. Here is some information that I have gathered over the years. The name Reid was mispelled and should be Reed. John Miller, Jesse Miller and other family members came from Warren County, Tennessee in the early 1820's. One account in the Reed family says that Edward Reed stayed at John Miller's home when Edward first arrived in Shelby County. History of Shelby County p932 Jesse Miller-Farming has grown to be an accepted business, and is conducted as any other line of work, intelligently and profitably. The rich Illinois farm lands yield good incomes for those fortunate enough to possess them, and the farmers living in Shelby County enjoy every advantage of climate and soil. Jesse Miller, who is one of the prosperous farmers of Shelbyville Township, was born five miles southeast of Shelbyville and three-quarters of a mile from his present home, June 16, 1832, a son of Jesse and Elizabeth (Reid) Miller, both natives of North Carolina. From that state they removed to Tennessee, and then to Illinois in 1820. The father of the elder Jesse was John Miller, while the father of his wife was Edward Reid. John Miller settled on the present farm of Charles Gladman, where he died in middle life. His children were as follows: Lowrey, John, Abraham, Thomas, William and Jesse-all of whom were farmers of Shelby County, and there reared families. Thomas, the last survivor, died when about sixty-five. Edward Reid settled first on the home place of Mr. Miller and the Millers and he were near neighbors. Here he died when about eighty-six, and his wife Sarah (Martin) Reid died about the same age. The Reid family was as follows: Moses, who reared a family and died in Shelby County at an advanced age; Andrew, who move to Nevada, Mo., where he died; Allen B., who also reared a family in Shelby County and died at an advanced age. Jesse Miller had a nice little farm of prairie land, on which he died when thirty-five years old, his widow surviving him twenty years. Their family was as follows: William, a farmer of Shelby County, who died at the age of forty five; Moses, a farmer of Shelby County, died at the age of forty-four; On the 1830 Shelby County, Illinois Census, page 147A next to Felix and Milly's family is the Jesse Miller family. Jesse Miller's wife was Elizabeth Reed the sister of Milly Reed Green.
Do you know anything about a Jesse Reed and his wife Matilda Montgomery Reed? I don't know about him but she was buried in a cemetary in Shelby County and her children were raised in Shelbyville. Matilda was a sister to my great great grandmother, Martha Louisa Mointgomery Elder Bell. They were both born in North Carolina but had most recently lived in Rutherford County Tennessee. Just thought I would ask.
