Hello, I am hoping that someone will make a connection on the name of my great grandmother. My gt-grandparents came to Indian Terr (OK)before statehood in 1906. I know they came from Shelby County. I recently found out that my gt-grandmothers maiden name was Strahl. My dads uncle died in 1934 and I guess in obituary it listed his parents as James M. Miller and Marguerite Ella Strahl Miller as his parents. I believe that she went by Margaret Ellen, because my dad said my older sister is named for her. Does this ring a bell with anyone? thanks, Anne Reynolds Moss
Do you have any idea of where in Shelby Co. they might have lived? Miller is a pretty common name. sue -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [SMTP:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, October 17, 2001 7:11 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [ILSHELBY] gt-grandmother Hello, I am hoping that someone will make a connection on the name of my great grandmother. I've been looking for Charles REYNOLDS, m Eliza Jane, b 1842. I found him in the 1870's with his wife and kids, but not in the 1880 census. Then I found the following marriage: STANLEY, HARVEY H REYNOLDS, ELIZA J SHELBY 12/27/1877 00E/0157 Could this marriage be Eliza Jane's new husband? Will someone please lookup in the 1880 census for STANLEY, HARVEY H. And ELIZA J? Thanx Susie
Surfing around I found 91 Charles Reynolds and 20 Eliza Jane Reynolds in the Illinois 1880 Census. Do you have additional information that might narrow down who you are looking for? To all the wonderful people who responded to my request for a lookup from Volume VI of the Inscriptions of Cemeteries in Shelby Co ILL, THANK YOU. My ancestral "journey" has been very rewarding, especially as I was able to spend this past weekend visiting "ancestors" going back 160 years from Shelbyville and Pana. THANK YOU, Debbie
Does any one out there have a copy of Volume VI of the Inscriptions of Shelby County Illinois Cemeteries. There were 10 volumes published in July 1972 by Ed Boedecker. This particular Volume VI covers the 5 cemeteries in Tower Hill. I visited the Tower Hill Cemetery this past weekend, but time did not permit me to locate and visit the other 4 cemeteries in the area. Any responses will be appreciated. Debbie Combest Beach of Waynesville MO.
Could someone look-up and see what if any info is available on Levi C. Cochran. From what I know he was a Postmaster of Cowden and possibly a Methodist preacher. I should know all this and I probably have it somewhere in my fathers diary but I can't find it. I am a direct descendant. He would be I believe my GGGrandfather. Thanks for the help. I believe the German Reformed Church merged with the Evangelical Church in the United States to form the Evangelical and Reformed Church, which in turn merged in the mid-20th century with the Congregational Church to form the present-day United Church of Christ. You can read about them all at <www.ucc.org/aboutus/shortcourse/index.shtml>. Presbyterian archivists/historians may be able to tell you how common it was for their churches to accept a non-Presbyterian as pastor. Maybe he was the only game in town/port in a storm/other bad analogies, so they left him preach. My relative was a Presbyterian elder in Neoga starting around 1870; I've read the original minutes of the elders' meetings, and they sound as though anyone who was not a signed/sealed/and delivered Presbyterian was going straight to a much warmer climate.
Hope someone out there has some information on the German Reform Church. My ancestor Henry K. Baines was a Rev. of this church in 1860, it had something to do with the Presbyterian Church as he officiated at the Shelbyville Presbyterian Church for a time. It was in 1859 and part of 1860 and he filled in between Joseph Wilson and Rev. M.P. Ormsby. Rev. Baines lived at Tower Hill and later became the Postmaster for Tower Hill. Hopefully someone will have some information on the early Presbyterian Church. Mr. Baines was born in England. Thanks, Sue from Idaho
Hi, In the 1860 census, I found no JAMES MARTIN. In the 1870 census there are 2 JAMES MARTIN listings but not with the exact same names of the children. The very DISAPPOINTING fact about the 1870 census is: the enumerator elected to omit the first name of most wives; using, instead, just "Mrs." and a lot of children's names are only listed with INITIALS....would you believe? I've also discovered that some names are not included in the indexes. I've had to literally read each one like a book to actually find some of our family. Here's all I found: 1870 Shelby Co. IL census MARTIN JAMES-----45-----farmer----200-----b. OH MRS. 50 b. OH GEORGE----19-----------------------b. IN MARY ANN--17-----------------------b. IN WILLIAM M.--15---------------------b.
