Meaning he didn't clear cut and he managed the woods so there was always old, middle and new trees growing. He would cut out some for lumber and thin smaller ones so the ones left could grow stronger and keep the scrub out. In Memoriam Jonathan martin Roudebush, youngest son of Christian Pierce and Margaret Jane Roudebush, was born in Schuyler County {Illinois} {died}March 4, 1924 at 5 p. m. , being at the time of his death 65 years, 11 months and 25 days old. Death was due to apoplexy. He was united in marriage to Nora may Fulk, March 5th, 1886, and to this union eight children were born: Ethel, Leona and Edward having preceded him in death. In the summer of 1918 the deceased suffered a stroke of apoplexy, from which he never recovered, though he was able to be about most of the time until the end. Mr. Roudebush was converted several years ago and later joined the Free Methodist Church at Christian Neck [7 miles east of Rushville on Hwy 24), remaining a member until the end. He leaves to mourn their loss, his wife and five children: Mrs. Minnie Redman, Dal {Dallas}, Alva, Delbert and Clarence and four grandchildren. Also two brothers and one sister: John of Tennessee; James of Rushville, and Mary Stockwell at Plymouth {Illinois}, besides a great number of old friends and neighbors. Mr. Roudebush, who was sixty-six years of age had driven to Rushville that afternoon in a buggy, and when he arrived at home and started getting out of the buggy , he was suddenly stricken, and died shortly afterward when Dr. V. Grandmother Nora Mae Fulk and Jonathan Roudebush started house keeping in a log cabin at the back of the farm close to what in 1930's and 1940's was Elzi Robinson Farm. His farm was right against the Ashwood Farm. The house we remember being Nora Mae Fulk Roudebush's is on the northside of the land and the log cabin was on the south. That farm was the one owned by Levi Fulk. Levi Fulk's house was back by the spring. It must have been a log cabin. Harriet Robinson, who lives in that area, says she has a picture of a log cabin that must be the one that Nora Mae and Jonathan Roudebush started housekeeping in. Harriet told that to Geraldine Toland Roudebush. Grandmother Nora Mae Fulk Roudebush taught Grandfather Jonathan Roudebush to write his name but his Granddaughter Betty Roudebush Bader says that she thought he could also read a little and write a little but neither very well. She figured that Grandmother Nora Mae Fulk Roudebush had taught him what he knew. Her son, Alva talked about his mother's large garden and fruit trees. I remember him saying there was several apple, peach, pear and plum trees. She also had grapes, blackberries and raspberries. She even grew watermelons and muskmelons along with all the vegetables and beans. Alva told that in the root cellar, they kept watermelons and muskmelons past Xmas wrapped in straw. Nora even has special sheets (just used for this) she'd put on the roof to dry the produce she grew. First thing in the morning (after the dew was gone on a sunny day), they put anything out in one layer and every evening all there pick up until the next morning or they were dry. Her granddaughter, Betty Roudebush Bader made a drawing of the inside of her house and told about the furniture in it. Betty lived north across the field from her when she was growing up. Roudebush Mrs. Nora may Roudebush, 85, died Thursday, April 5 {1951}, at her home in Rushville Township {Schuyler County, Illinois}; She was a life-time resident of Schuyler County. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Voorhees Memorial Home with the Rev. J. A. Mason, officiating. Burial was in Good Hope Cemetery near Rushville {Illinois}. Nora May Roudebush, daughter of Levi and Elizabeth Swope Fulk, was born September 6, 1865 and died at her home in Rushville Township on April 5, 1951, at the age of 85 years, 6 month, and 24 days. She received her early education in the Christian Neck School and lived her entire life in that neighborhood. On March 4, 1886, she was united in marriage to Jonathan M. Roudebush who preceded her in death, March 4, 1924. To this union were born eight children. Surviving her are one daughter, Mrs. Minnie Louise Rebman of Camden {Illinois}, {4 sons} Dallas, Alva, Delbert and Clarence of Rushville {Illinois}. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Blemling of Beardstown and Mrs. Nellie Roy of Los Angeles, California/ of Independence, Missouri. There are 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Roudebush was preceded in death by three children, Nellie Ethel, Leona Mae, and James Edward {Eddie}, and the following brothers and sisters: Frank, Edward, Charles, John, and Mrs. Anna Sellers. Early in life she was united with the Free Methodist Church, and served willingly and steadfastly in the faith until her death. Mrs. Roudebush's great interest was in her home and family, and she was always happiest when surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, by whom she will be sadly missed.
