Work at Ray Tile Works, Ray, Illinois. Lived Ray, Illinois. Farmed Rushville Township, Schuyler County, Illinois most of his life. After retiring from farming, became Assessor for Schuyler County, Illinois until 1979. Around the same time they moved into Rushville, Illinois and were in the same place until both had died. When he went to work (about 1921) at the tile works in Ray, Illinois, he had been ill for a year. I'm (Sara) quite sure how the illness started but he ended up with rheumatic fever which causes problems with left leg. In later years, big boils would show up above the knee. They would break by themselves or if they hurt to much before breaking, the doctor would lance them. Out of the boils would come splinters of bone. As long as I (Sara) can remember the left leg was shorter and stiff. It only bend a inch or so at the knee. He always walked with a limp but it never stopped him from walking anywhere. He would go to work on crutches and come home crawling on his stomach, to tired and worn out to walk. Once I asked him what he did there and he said he kept the fires for the kiln. Later on he stacked bricks in and out of the kilns too. After World War I (he was exempt because of being a farmer), Grandfather Alva bought a car (Model T) from a soldier's family who died during the war. The Model T had been kept up on blocks during the war. Grandfather Alva did know how to drive but he got it home. Grandmother Freeda had been taught to drive by her uncle, Herschel Ashwood before she was sixteen years old. Grandmother Freeda then taught Grandfather Alva. The closest place to get gas for the car was in Ray, Illinois. Just south of the village was a very steep hill. Unless the tank was completely full, you couldn't drive up it, only back up it. The cars in those days didn't have fuel pumps. They were gravity feed. Grandfather Alva fixed that. He got an extra gas tank cap, put a hole in it where he attached a valve stem. Grandmother Freeda would sit in the back seat (where you put the gas in was under the front passenger side seat), change the regular gas cap for the one Alva fixed up. Then she would put on the air pump (what we called a bicycle pump) and pump it while Grandfather Alva would drive up the hill. People couldn't understand how they could do that since they hadn't got any gas. When Alva went back to farming (about 1923), he did all the farming with horses. All the farmers walked all the time behind the horses while working the fields. Because of Grandfather's leg, he couldn't take all that walking. He fixed up a way to ride while going straight down the row only getting off to turn and go back down the next row. He did that to all his equipment. Grandfather Alva's tractor caught fire and severely burnt him. He had to stay in the hospital and had skin grafts taken from (either back or right leg) and put on (either back or right leg). It looked like some strange patchwork quilt. The first fall that the old village near Governor Dodge's home (by Cassville, Wisconsin) opened, They were looking for people who knew how to harvest corn, etc. Grandfather Alva and Grandmother Freeda came to visit and we went over there. Grandfather Alva showed them how to corn knife. A corn knife was a blade attached to leather then strapped on the hand. It wasn't much bigger than his hand. I didn't pay attention to how it worked (there were horses). Now I wish I had. Grandfather Alva never graduated 8th grade but he was the most intelligent person I thing I ever met. He read everything he got his hands on and knew everything going on in the world. He was a Republican and complained about Chicago getting all the taxes instead of the rest of the state. There was a Christian Neck grade school close to his farm house and Grandfather Alva always made sure there was a fire, firewood and water for it. Grandma Nora Fulk Roudebush went there and all her children went there also. I (Sara) was told that all of Alva Roudebush's children went there before going on to high school in Rushville, Illinois. Christian Neck Community Building was built by the community and Grandfather Alva helped built it while still on crutches. Grandfather Alva's father was a woodsman besides a farmer. When the circus would being coming to town, Alva would make barrel lids and sell them to have money to go.
