The first nonpopulation census, a census of manufactures was taken in 1810. This census was repeated in 1820. Censuses were taken of mines, agriculture, commerce and manufactures in 1840. All estant schedules are at the National Archives. 1820 census of manufactures. The National Archives has microfilmed the 1820 census of manufactures (M279). Schedules exist for Conn. Del. DC, Ga. Ill. Ind. Ky. Maine, Md., Mass., N.H., N.J., N.Y., N.C., Ohio, Penn. R.I., S.C., Tenn., Ver., Va. The schedules show the name of the owner, location of establishment, raw materials used, articles manufactured, number of employees, types and numbers of machinery and other information. 1850-1880 nonpopulation schedules were taken relating agriculture, industry or manufactures and social statistics. In 1880 the social statistics schedule was dropped and supplemental schedules were taken for the insane, idiots, deaf-mutes, blind, homeless children, prisoners and paupers and the indigent.
