In the summer of 1918 the deceased suffered a stroke of apoplexy, from which he never recovered, though he was able to be about most of the time until the end. Mr. Roudebush was converted several years ago and later joined the Free Methodist Church at Christian Neck [7 miles east of Rushville on Hwy 24), remaining a member until the end. Grandmother Nora Mae Fulk and Jonathan Roudebush started house keeping in a log cabin at the back of the farm close to what in 1930's and 1940's was Elzi Robinson Farm. His farm was right against the Ashwood Farm. The house we remember being Nora Mae Fulk Roudebush's is on the northside of the land and the log cabin was on the south. That farm was the one owned by Levi Fulk. Levi Fulk's house was back by the spring. It must have been a log cabin. Harriet Robinson, who lives in that area, says she has a picture of a log cabin that must be the one that Nora Mae and Jonathan Roudebush started housekeeping in. Harriet told that to Geraldine Toland Roudebush. Grandmother Nora Mae Fulk Roudebush taught Grandfather Jonathan Roudebush to write his name but his Granddaughter Betty Roudebush Bader says that she thought he could also read a little and write a little but neither very well. She figured that Grandmother Nora Mae Fulk Roudebush had taught him what he knew. Her son, Alva talked about his mother's large garden and fruit trees. I remember him saying there was several apple, peach, pear and plum trees. She also had grapes, blackberries and raspberries. She even grew watermelons and muskmelons along with all the vegetables and beans. Alva told that in the root cellar, they kept watermelons and muskmelons past Xmas wrapped in straw. Nora even has special sheets (just used for this) she'd put on the roof to dry the produce she grew. First thing in the morning (after the dew was gone on a sunny day), they put anything out in one layer and every evening all there pick up until the next morning or they were dry. Her granddaughter, Betty Roudebush Bader made a drawing of the inside of her house and told about the furniture in it. Betty lived north across the field from her when she was growing up. Work at Ray Tile Works, Ray, Illinois. Lived Ray, Illinois. Farmed Rushville Township, Schuyler County, Illinois most of his life. After retiring from farming, became Assessor for Schuyler County, Illinois until 1979. Around the same time they moved into Rushville, Illinois and were in the same place until both had died. When he went to work (about 1921) at the tile works in Ray, Illinois, he had been ill for a year. I'm (Sara) quite sure how the illness started but he ended up with rheumatic fever which causes problems with left leg. In later years, big boils would show up above the knee. They would break by themselves or if they hurt to much before breaking, the doctor would lance them. Out of the boils would come splinters of bone. As long as I (Sara) can remember the left leg was shorter and stiff. It only bend a inch or so at the knee. He always walked with a limp but it never stopped him from walking anywhere. He would go to work on crutches and come home crawling on his stomach, to tired and worn out to walk. Once I asked him what he did there and he said he kept the fires for the kiln. Later on he stacked bricks in and out of the kilns too. After World War I (he was exempt because of being a farmer), Grandfather Alva bought a car (Model T) from a soldier's family who died during the war. The Model T had been kept up on blocks during the war. Grandfather Alva did know how to drive but he got it home. Grandmother Freeda had been taught to drive by her uncle, Herschel Ashwood before she was sixteen years old. Grandmother Freeda then taught Grandfather Alva. The closest place to get gas for the car was in Ray, Illinois. Just south of the village was a very steep hill. Unless the tank was completely full, you couldn't drive up it, only back up it. The cars in those days didn't have fuel pumps. They were gravity feed. Grandfather Alva fixed that. He got an extra gas tank cap, put a hole in it where he attached a valve stem. Grandmother Freeda would sit in the back seat (where you put the gas in was under the front passenger side seat), change the regular gas cap for the one Alva fixed up. Then she would put on the air pump (what we called a bicycle pump) and pump it while Grandfather Alva would drive up the hill. People couldn't understand how they could do that since they hadn't got any gas. When Alva went back to farming (about 1923), he did all the farming with horses. All the farmers walked all the time behind the horses while working the fields. Because of Grandfather's leg, he couldn't take all that walking. He fixed up a way to ride while going straight down the row only getting off to turn and go back down the next row. He did that to all his equipment. Grandfather Alva's tractor caught fire and severely burnt him. He had to stay in the hospital and had skin grafts taken from (either back or right leg) and put on (either back or right leg). It looked like some strange patchwork quilt. The first fall that the old village near Governor Dodge's home (by Cassville, Wisconsin) opened, They were looking for people who knew how to harvest corn, etc. Grandfather Alva and Grandmother Freeda came to visit and we went over there. Grandfather Alva showed them how to corn knife. A corn knife was a blade attached to leather then strapped on the hand. It wasn't much bigger than his hand. I didn't pay attention to how it worked (there were horses). Now I wish I had. Grandfather Alva never graduated 8th grade but he was the most intelligent person I thing I ever met. He read everything he got his hands on and knew everything going on in the world. He was a Republican and complained about Chicago getting all the taxes instead of the rest of the state. There was a Christian Neck grade school close to his farm house and Grandfather Alva always made sure there was a fire, firewood and water for it. Grandma Nora Fulk Roudebush went there and all her children went there also. I (Sara) was told that all of Alva Roudebush's children went there before going on to high school in Rushville, Illinois. Christian Neck Community Building was built by the community and Grandfather Alva helped built it while still on crutches. Grandfather Alva's father was a woodsman besides a farmer. When the circus would being coming to town, Alva would make barrel lids and sell them to have money to go. Warner GOULD was my g grandfather. In 1876 he married Martha MOORE in Oakland Twp, SCHUYLER CO, IL. By 1900 Martha married again. What happened to Warner M? In 1877 Warner purchased property from brother (Robert H. GOULD) in Schuyler Co. The document is dated March 14, 1877 and signed Robert GOULD and wife Mary(HILLS). Warner's siblings were Robert H. Gould, John Walker Gould, Sarah Gould, and Joseph Henry Gould. They were all born 1840 era, in Ohio. In OH they lived in Summit, Keene and Franklin Twp, Coshocton, OH. Joseph is the only Gould that stayed in OH. Warner's father was Jason Gould aka Joson. Joson appears in the 1860 census of OH asliving in Coshocton, Franklin Co, OH. Joson married Eunice Walker in OH. Robert and Joseph both served in the Civil War in OH. Robert was wounded in the Battle of Mission Ridge. Jason/Joson was born NY. Jason's father John Gould was also born NY. I have reason to believe John GOULD may have lived in Auburn, NY for awhile which I believe was called Black River Country at the time. John Gould married Olive ? Possibly Thompson. Any knowledge of the above Gould's? Laureen wite@icanect.net
Hi everyone, I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Robin Petersen, and I am the new coordinator for the ILGenweb site for Schuyler County. This is a dream come true as I've spent years researching my family from Schuyler Co., and have come to love the county as if I actually was born there! I've corresponded with many of you privately, but hope that everyone will share their ideas on how the webpage should evolve. What would you like to see? Afterall, this is a website for all of us! This past week, I've had two very good ideas from researchers - the inclusion of marriage records, and maps showing cemeteries, churches, and schools for the individual townships. As of tonight, you'll find on the page a new section of links to some of the cemeteries in Rushville Twp., and a new section on the newspapers of Schuyler Co. Please check often - things are being added almost daily. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilschuyl/ If you have _any information you'd like to share that is in the public domain, or that you've written, or gathered in your research - please contact me. I'm begging :) Unfortunately, at this time we can't accept gedcoms, but family group sheets are ok. Lastly, I want to thank Ken Huffman for all the great work he's done on behalf of the Schuyler page for the past year! Robin robin@firedragon.com

I am looking for any information on Zachariah Lansdon who purchased land in 1837. He is listed in Precinct 1 in the 1840 census. Where is Precinct 1? I believe he in the father of James from Adams Co., IL and Lafayette from Washington Co., ID but I have not been able to make the connection. I look forward to hearing from someone. Thanks. Abby
Looking for any information on a G. TAYLOR and his wife, Nancy Ann ___. She was b. abt 1779 and d. in 1842, at Schuyler Co., IL. She is buried at Mt. Harmony/Davenport cemetery and on her tombstone, it says Nancy Ann TAYLOR, wife of G. They probably m. abt 1800 and possibly in KY. They had at least two daughters, Elizabeth Ann TAYLOR, b. 1816 in KY, m. 1833 to Daniel JAMES; and Nancy Ann TAYLOR, b. 1818, m. 1834 to Elias HARRIS. The older Nancy signed for both of these daughters to marry in Schuyler Co., IL, so her husband was probably deceased.
