I am a near relative of Dann Norton and have been corresponding with him. He had trouble with his E-mail and has changed his address a couple of times. The last message I had from him was on the 5th. Everything to every address he has given me comes back. Could someone contact him and say I'm trying to send him stuff. Sara

You can also order a copy of the original grant papers at this site. It covers land purchases for Indiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi and Missouri. From: jmkoch@pacbell.net, Mary Subject: Chapman Connections in Schuyler County, Illinois I am looking for death records(s) in Schuyler County, IL for David Marcus Chapman (b. 1808 Jefferson, Schoharie County, NY) and second wife Angelina C. Burchard Chapman (b. 1824 NY/Mass). I do not know when or where they died or where they are buried. Below are the last records (census) I have for this couple. Angelia was 20 years younger than David, and may have married after his death. They are my Great-great grandfather and mother. A daugher, Minerva Chapman Murphy (b. 19 Apr, 1830)(d. 31 Mar 1912 Rushville, Schuyler, IL and is buried in Brooklyn Cemetery, Row 7, old part). Minerva is the first child of David, (b. 1808 NY) and his first wife, Eliza Harris Chapman. Minerva married Alan Murphy and lived next door to her father, David Chapman, in Schuyler county. 1850 U.S., Illinois Census, Illinois State Archives -- Surname card file: Chapman Chapman, Angelina, Age 1, bp: Ill, County, Schuyler, p 430, line 4 -----------? That is how she knows about David Chapman. Dolores corresponds with a descendant of Edward Ridenour who lived next door to Allen Murphy. This person did not know of Chapman, but sent Dolores her paperwork. Edward Ridenour's wife was Nancy Jane Quick. Benjamin Raymond, son of Uriah Raymond, and family moved to Reno county, KS about 1880. Benjamin Raymond's daughter, Fridelle, married Clarence Murphy. Dolores says she does not know if any Allen Murphys or Chapmans went to Kansas in the wagon train with the Raymonds. Taught at Rushville High School, Rushville, Schuyler County, Illinois where she met her husband, John C Kost (he was from Galesburg, Illinois), who taught there also. After marriage in the 1920's, they moved to Roswell, New Mexico where John had excepted a position as a Latin and Ancient History teacher at New Mexico Military Institute. Her daughter, Nancy K Kost Harvey says (June 1, 1998) she is still alive and is 95 years old and quite frail. She has lost most of her short term memory, but the long term is still there and she has told me many stories about the family. She remembers Jane Dean {Montooth} Walker, who was called Grandma Walker by all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She recalls that Grandma Walker occasionally went back to Ireland to visit. Of course, as a child, she did not pay attention to where she went in Ireland or who she visited there. We have a string of garnets beads which she brought back from one of her visits. My mother split the strand with her sister and we always referred to them as the "Walker Beads". We Also have a paisley shawl which she brought back and which has covered a table in my mother's living room ever since I can remember. We Have a blue pitcher with a gold rim which supposedly was brought to America in Grandpa Walker's sea chest. He said he didn't have a middle name, we guess he didn't like the name Delass. Work at Ray Tile Works, Ray, Illinois. Lived Ray, Illinois. Farmed Rushville Township, Schuyler County, Illinois most of his life. After retiring from farming, became Assessor for Schuyler County, Illinois until 1979. Around the same time they moved into Rushville, Illinois and were in the same place until both had died. When he went to work (about 1921) at the tile works in Ray, Illinois, he had been ill for a year. I'm (Sara) quite sure how the illness started but he ended up with rheumatic fever which causes problems with left leg. In later years, big boils would show up above the knee. They would break by themselves or if they hurt to much before breaking, the doctor would lance them. Out of the boils would come splinters of bone. As long as I (Sara) can remember the left leg was shorter and stiff. It only bend a inch or so at the knee. He always walked with a limp but it never stopped him from walking anywhere. He would go to work on crutches and come home crawling on his stomach, to tired and worn out to walk. Once I asked him what he did there and he said he kept the fires for the kiln. Later on he stacked bricks in and out of the kilns too. After World War I (he was exempt because of being a farmer), Grandfather Alva bought a car (Model T) from a soldier's family who died during the war. The Model T had been kept up on blocks during the war. Grandfather Alva did know how to drive but he got it home. Grandmother Freeda had been taught to drive by her uncle, Herschel Ashwood before she was sixteen years old. Grandmother Freeda then taught Grandfather Alva. The closest place to get gas for the car was in Ray, Illinois. Just south of the village was a very steep hill. Unless the tank was completely full, you couldn't drive up it, only back up it. The cars in those days didn't have fuel pumps. They were gravity feed. Grandfather Alva fixed that. He got an extra gas tank cap, put a hole in it where he attached a valve stem. Grandmother Freeda would sit in the back seat (where you put the gas in was under the front passenger side seat), change the regular gas cap for the one Alva fixed up. Then she would put on the air pump (what we called a bicycle pump) and pump it while Grandfather Alva would drive up the hill. People couldn't understand how they could do that since they hadn't got any gas. When Alva went back to farming (about 1923), he did all the farming with horses. All the farmers walked all the time behind the horses while working the fields. Because of Grandfather's leg, he couldn't take all that walking. He fixed up a way to ride while going straight down the row only getting off to turn and go back down the next row. He did that to all his equipment. In the late 50's or early 60's, Grandfather Alva's tractor caught fire and severely burnt him. He had to stay in the hospital and had skin grafts taken from (either back or right leg) and put on (either back or right leg). It looked like some strange patchwork quilt. The first fall that the old village near Governor Dodge's home (by Cassville, Wisconsin) opened, They were looking for people who knew how to harvest corn, etc. Grandfather Alva and Grandmother Freeda came to visit and we went over there. Grandfather Alva showed them how to corn knife. A corn knife was a blade attached to leather then strapped on the hand. It wasn't much bigger than his hand. I didn't pay attention to how it worked (there were horses). Now I wish I had. Grandfather Alva never graduated 8th grade but he was the most intelligent person I thing I ever met. He read everything he got his hands on and knew everything going on in the world. He was a Republican and complained about Chicago getting all the taxes instead of the rest of the state. There was a Christian Neck grade school close to his farm house and Grandfather Alva always made sure there was a fire, firewood and water for it. Grandma Nora Fulk Roudebush went there and all her children went there also. I (Sara) was told that all of Alva Roudebush's children went there before going on to high school in Rushville, Illinois. Christian Neck Community Building was built by the community and Grandfather Alva helped built it while still on crutches. Grandfather Alva's father was a woodsman besides a farmer. When the circus would being coming to town, Alva would make barrel lids and sell them to have money to go. The Rushville Times and Herald, Rushville, Schuyler County, Illinois, Wednesday, September 21, 1927 Geo. Montooth, Civil War Veteran, Died In Macomb George Montooth, Civil War veteran, and a resident of Oakland Township for almost eighty years, died Thursday morning at the home of this daughter, Mrs. Earl Haney {Francis "Fanny" Mae}, in Macomb {Illinois} with whom he had made his home for the last four years. The remains accompanied by his family and thirteen members of McDonough County {Illinois} Post No. 6, American Legion of Macomb were brought to Rushville {Schuyler County, Illinois} Sunday afternoon. Funeral services were held from the M. E. Church at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. C. W. Monton, assisted by Rev. R. T. Artis of Camden {Illinois}. An impressive memorial service given by the G. A. R. Circle followed the services at the church and The Daughter of Veterans paid their tribute in a service at the cemetery. Only a few of the Civil War veterans were able to attend the funeral. McDonough County Post American Legion No. 6 was represented by Commander W. R. Butterfield, who was in command of the military escort that marched to the cemetery, where Chaplain W. R. Jenkins conducted the burial service, attended by the color guard. A military salute by the firing squad was the last tribute paid this veteran soldier. George Montooth was born June 23, 1843, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and died September 15, 1927, at Macomb, aged 84 years, 2months, and 23 days. At the age of two years , he came with his parents to Schuyler County {Illinois}, and with the exception of the last four years had been a resident of Oakland Township {Schuyler County, Illinois}. Then his health began to fail four years ago he went to Macomb to live at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Earl Haney. He was married Marsh 28, 1860, to Mary Jane Sloan, who preceded him to the home beyond, sixteen years ago. To this union were born thirteen children. Two daughter, Mrs. Mary Snyder and Mrs. Louella Frye preceded him in death. The children surviving are: Mrs. Fanny Haney; Mrs. Alice Van Order; Mrs. Grace Jones of Ray {Illinois}; Mrs. Effie Ashwood of Muskogee, Okla.; Mrs. Lizzie Walker and Ed of Pasadena, Calif.; and Frank and Warren of Watertown, South Dakota. He is also survived by sixty-one grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, one brother, James Montooth and one sister, Mrs. Katherine Dean, both of Rushville. He was converted during the great revival at Ray {Oakland Township, Schuyler County, Illinois} that was held many years ago in an old log school house east of the farm residence of Gilbert McMillen {north of Ray once Oakland Station}. He and his wife later united with the Methodist Episcopal Church and remained true to the faith and often during his last sickness told this children he was ready and waiting for the summons "Come enter into the joys of the Lord". During the Civil War, he was among the first to enlist for service and served his country thirty-seven months in 119th Illinois, Infantry, Company B. It was a great pleasure to talk of the experiences and love of comrades to comrades and just a few days ago, while visiting with his pastor, told of the wonderful life and love for Lincoln. Mr. Montooth was a great reader and staunch supporter of his political party. He was a very successful farmer and lived on the old homestead until about thirty years ago when he retired from farming to engage in the general merchandise business at Ray. He also served seventeen years as Postmaster. After the death of his wife he deisposed of his business and moved back to the farm. Two years later he again moved to Ray. In a short time his health began to fail and it was then he moved to Macomb where he resided until his death. Most of the time during the past year he was confined to his home. Wednesday morning, he was taken much worse. The children were called, but all they could do was to ease and help bear his suffering until early Thursday morning he fell peacefully asleep to awake in the beautiful rearms of Heaven. Mr. Montooth was always a friend to those in trouble and need and his work will live on. He was a Christian man, a loving father and a true friend and neighbor, loved and respected by all who knew him. Thus with the passing of this aged, loved, and respected citizen, another of God's appointed has forgone to the home prepared by God and His Angels, to a "House not made with hands, eternal in the Heavens". Grandmother Nora Mae Fulk and Jonathan Roudebush started house keeping in a log cabin at the back of the farm close to what in 1930's and 1940's was Elzi Robinson Farm. His farm was right against the Ashwood Farm. The house we remember being Nora Mae Fulk Roudebush's is on the northside of the land and the log cabin was on the south. That farm was the one owned by Levi Fulk. Levi Fulk's house was back by the spring. It must have been a log cabin. Harriet Robinson, who lives in that area, says she has a picture of a log cabin that must be the one that Nora Mae and Jonathan Roudebush started housekeeping in. Harriet told that to Geraldine Toland Roudebush. Grandmother Nora Mae Fulk Roudebush taught Grandfather Jonathan Roudebush to write his name but his Granddaughter Betty Roudebush Bader says that she thought he could also read a little and write a little but neither very well. She figured that Grandmother Nora Mae Fulk Roudebush had taught him what he knew. Her son, Alva talked about his mother's large garden and fruit trees. I remember him saying there was several apple, peach, pear and plum trees. She also had grapes, blackberries and raspberries. She even grew watermelons and muskmelons along with all the vegetables and beans. Alva told that in the root cellar, they kept watermelons and muskmelons past Xmas wrapped in straw. Nora even has special sheets (just used for this) she'd put on the roof to dry the produce she grew. First thing in the morning (after the dew was gone on a sunny day), they put anything out in one layer and every evening all there pick up until the next morning or they were dry. Her granddaughter, Betty Roudebush Bader made a drawing of the inside of her house and told about the furniture in it. Betty lived north across the field from her when she was growing up. Levi Fulk, a resident on Monroe Street, between Eleventh and Twelfth, died on Friday last at the age of seventy-three years. He had been failing for some time, but not bedfast until the past few days. His son, Charlie Maro started putting an "s" on the end of Fulk so it was spelled "Fulks". Mom said they laughed and thought they were putting on airs. Grandfather Alva Roudebush said he was told that Levi had 7 brothers and father (others say 3 or 4 brothers) that fought for the South in the Civil War. That they were overseers on plantation. We haven't found any prove. Said that Levi was paid to marry Elizabeth and that he had to go off and get a divorce before he could do it. Grandfather Alva thought it was New Orleans but no one knows for sure. Said they changed Robert Franklin's birth year. Hi, I am trying to find out if Peter and Catherine Stone(Stoner)who had sons Emanuel and Daniel, had a daughter named Sarah. She was born in 1830 in NC. They are listed as Stone on the 1850 census in Schuyler Co. They are Stoner on the 1860 census in McDonough Co. Sarah was listed on her marriage certificate as Sarah L. Kennedy when she married William Kennedy. I found Peter and Sarah living with them in 1860. This made me wonder if they put her married name on certificate by mistake. Does anyone have an idea about her? Pat ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
