GRANDMA'S DISEASE Author unknown courtesy Connie Washburn There's been a change in Grandma, we've noticed her of late. She always reading history or jotting down some date. She's tracking back the family, we'll all have pedigrees. Oh, Grandma's got a hobby - she's climbing the FAMILY TREE. Poor Grandpa does the cooking, and now, or so he states, That worst of all, he has to wash the cups and dinner plates. Grandma can't be bothered, she busy as a bee, Compiling genealogy for the FAMILY TREE. She has no time to babysit, the curtains are a fright, No buttons left on Grandpa's shirt, the flower bed's a sight. She's given up her club work and the soaps on TV, the only thing she does nowadays is climb the FAMILY TREE. She goes down to the courthouse and studies ancient lore, We know more about our forebears than we ever knew before. The books are old and dusty, they make poor Grandma sneeze, A minor irritation when you're climbing the FAMILY TREE. The mail is all for Grandma, it comes from near and far, Last week she got the proof she needs to join the D.A.R. A monumental project all do agree, All from climbing up the FAMILY TREE. Now some folks came from Scotland, some from Galway Bay, Some were French as pastry, some German all the way. Some went West to stake there claims, some stayed there by the sea. Grandma hopes to find them all, as she climbs the FAMILY TREE. She wanders through the graveyard in search of date and name, The rich, the poor, the in-between, all sleeping there the same. She pauses now and then to rest, fanned by a gentle breeze, That blows above the Fathers of all our FAMILY TREES. There are pioneers and patriots, mixed in our kith and kin, Who blazed the paths of wilderness and fought through thick and thin. But none more staunch than Grandma, who eyes light up with glee, Each time she finds a missing branch for the FAMILY TREE. Their skills were wide and varied, from carpenter to cook, And one, alas, the records show, was hopelessly a crook. Blacksmith, weaver, farmer, judge - some tutored for a fee. Once lost in time, now all recorded on the FAMILIY TREE. To some it's just a hobby, to Grandma it's much more, She learns the joys and heartaches of those that went before. They loved, they lost, they laughed, they wept - and now, for you and me, They live again in spirit, around the FAMILY TREE. At last she's nearly finished and we are each exposed, Life will be the same again, this we all supposed. Grandma will cook and sew, serve cookies with our tea. We'll all be fat, just as before the wretched FAMILY TREE. Sad to relate, the preacher called and visited for a spell. We talked about the Gospel, and other things as well. The heathen folk, the poor and then - twas fate, it had to be, Somehow the conversation turned to Grandma and the FAMILY TREE. He never knew his Grandpa, his mother's name was..... Clark? He and Grandma talked and talked, outside it grew dark. We'd hoped our fears were groundless, but just like some disease, Grandma's become an addict - she's hooked on FAMILY TREES. Our souls are filled with sorrow, our hearts sad with dismay. Our ears could scarce believe the words we heard our Grandma say, "It sure is a lucky thing that you have come to me, I know exactly how it's done, I'll climb your FAMILY TREE.
Hi, does anyone know anything about the following family? Jacob Fowler, supposedly from SC, wife Rebecca?? They had a daughter, Elizabeth, supposedly born in Jefferson Co., KY, 1800, who married Richard Springs Black in DuBois Co., IN about 1816. The Blacks moved to Schuyler about 1825, settled on the site of Rushville, but had to give up that farm and moved south into Woodstock Twp. Other children of Jacob and Rebecca? Fowler were: Mordecai, who married ?? Riley, probably in IN, William, Isaac, Mary, Sarah and Rebecca. All of these people moved to Schuyler in 1826-1827. Most of this info is from the Combined History of Schuyler and Brown Co, 1882. (Many thanks to Carol Longwell Miller for transcribing it!!) Any other info, particularily on Jacob and Rebecca? woulf be much appreciated. Mary G. in NJ

I need the name and dates of the Bolton-Bolton's who are burried in the Round Prairie Cemetery. The cemetery is about 3 miles or so from the old town of Birmingham Illinois. I believe it to be in Schuyler Co, not Hancock, although it sets close to the line. Any help appreciated. Evelyn in CA

Seeking info on the family of PLEASANT PEELER and his wife ALICE. They resided in Schuyler County from at least 1840. They were still there on the 1850 Census. Could someone check and see if they are on the 1860 or 1870 Census?? Their son SAMUEL PEELER b. 1828 in TN, married ELIZABETH BARKER (d/o William & Katherine Barker who also resided in Schuyler County) on March 28, 1850. THANKS Carolyn in Oklahoma

Hi everyone, Just wanted to let you all know that this evening I uploaded the book, The Way To My Golden Wedding, by Rev. David Hindman. To cut down on loading time, I've separated the book into three parts. I hope you'll enjoy it. This is a book that was my great grandmother's and is the autobiography of her cousin who left Pennsylvania in 1846 and came to Rushville, Illinois. He was one of the "California Boys" who went in search of gold during the gold rush, and served in the Civil War. Many Schuyler names are mentioned, and reading the descriptions of the trip to California, you'll feel as though you are accompaning them. The book is listed under Archives - Documents and Articles. Also, when you visit the Schuyler County ILGenWeb site, be sure to check "What's New" first - that is where I am listing all the changes and additions. Some new additions this week: Prairie Farmer's Directory to Schuyler and Brown Counties Biographical Review of Cass, Schuyler and Brown Counties Additions are added daily. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilschuyl Take care, Robin Schuyler County ILGenweb Coordinator

Please feel free to drive by and comment. I recently found an old newspaper with an article describing the histroy of Frederick. I was amazed to see that it was written by my grandmother. It is transcribed as best as I could read it because the newspaper had deteriorated quite a bit. This is my first post to this list (I think), I thought I better quit lurking and try to contribute. I recently examined the BLM Land Patent Records for Illinois and came across some deed entries for a George Cochran, 1818, in Schuyler County. It seems he was given some land parcels for services rendered as a soldier, parhaps in the War of 1812. Now, the truth is I've been looking at any and all George Cochrans (and all of the variant spellings of this name) for some time in the hopes of finding a link to my ancestor Lewis Cochran/Coughran born in 1811 somewhere in Illinois. However, up until now I haven't had any reason to go so far north at this early a date. I thought that there weren't any true counties this far north in 1818. (Perhaps I need a quick education in the history of the formation of Illinois counties.) Can anyone shed any light on this George Cochran? Is he related to the Jackson and Randolph County Cochrans? Does anyone know the names of his children? Thanks, Bob Foster
Hi, I desperately need to talk to someone who volunteers at the Schuyler County Jail Museum library. This is in regards to the Schuyler County ILGenweb site. Please reply personally. Robin Petersen robin@firedragon.com Schuyler County ILGenWeb coordinator http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilschuyl
I could not get to the info. Apparantly I ran out of memory. Could you tell me what additional info was posted on your site? Linda
Both Linda's and Robin's wonderful information on the Manloves sent me back to my files, and in looking over my Manlove-descended line, I came across several other NC>IL names that Schuyler County researchers might recognize: BODENHAMER, HORNEY/HARNEY/HANEY, DAVIS, HIATT, CHIPMAN, HART, ANTRIUM, and WELBORN. Gosh--you all make me feel like I've come HOME, even though I've never been further east than the Grand Canyon or further west than the Hudson River (one of those "flyover people"). Thanks to Linda, Robin and Sara (and to Schuyler researchers I don't yet know about), Maureen

Hi all, I am not researching the Manlove family, but found the following regarding the early Manloves: Futhey and Cope, HISTORY OF CHESTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVNIA, 1881 "To George the Second, King of Great Britian, etc.,...The Petition of the People call'd Quakers, from their Quarterly Meeting, held at Concord the 12th day of the third month (May), 1735, comprehending all of that Profession who inhabit within the County of Chester, in the Province of Pennsylvania, and the Countrys of New Castle, Kent, and Sussex on Delaware in America, Humbly Sheweth,...That the majority of the first adventurers for settling and cultivating these Countrys under William Penn, our late Proprietor and Governour, being Quakers, chearfully transported themselves and ffamilys from their native Land that they might in this Retreat enjoy Ease and Quiet...That the few of those first adventurers who are yet alive among us with their Descendants and Successors on the border of Maryland perceiving that the Ld Baltimore by his Commissioners declin'd executing the agreement for Settling the boundaries, and hearing of the threatening us'd by some of the Inhabitants of that Colony that the said Ld Baltimore would use his endeavours to possess our Lands and our Labour...Mark Manlove Juner; Ebenezer Manlove; Luke Manlove; Absalom Manlove (among many others). This is a very long petition, and deals with the border dispute. Robin On Fri, 5 Mar 1999 LManlove@aol.com wrote: > I would not say that there was a disconnect with the MANLOVES. Lori, First: Was the Samuel Warren or Warren Samuel family living in the town of Huntsville or the township of Huntsville? Lots of boys between the ages of 10 and 12 would work on other peoples farms. One of my grandfathers always seemed to have unrelated boy/young men and girls/young women living with him. They would have helped with the farm work and housekeeping chores for some money. Others would go living with someone during the school week so they could get an education and would do work for their keep. Check Robin's Schuyler County site for more census <http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilschuyl> I'll keep an eye out as I put things up on my Schuyler County site <http://www.usgennet.org/~ahilschu> Sara LB2R2us@aol.com wrote: > > I'm realitively new to doing genealogy and to using this forum, e-mail from > county. I'm realitively new to doing genealogy and to using this forum, e-mail from county. I can use any info to help me understand rights and wrongs of what to do. My g-grandfather lived in Huntsville, Schuyler. In the 1850's census he was living with a family named Warren, Samuel. His name was Harrison Brooks and he was 10. What reasons would there be for him to be living with another family? I am having trouble finding all the links for my families, cause I'm not sure of all the clues on where to look. Is it possible to be researching to many different branches of familie? Thank you so much for this opportunity and for all the info that you supply. I'm very grateful for the time and engery that is taken to keep these sites running. IL has some of the best for info and ease of using. Thankyou-thankyou. Lori Brooks Reed
