    1. Cemetery Damage
    2. Robin Petersen
    3. Hi everyone, In today's Peoria Journal Star, there was an article regarding the Manito cemetery, in Mason Co, Illinois. It seems that recently vandals toppled headstones and broke numerous other markers. This is one of the oldest, most historical cemeteries in the area. The most severely damaged was a marble monument for Bartholomew F. Seelye, born Jan. 25, 1825, died April 11, 1884. The Manito Township Supervisor, James Fleming, is trying to contact a relative of the Seelye family. Hope someone can help! Robin Schuyler County ILSCHUYL-L McDonough County ILMCDONO-L

    1. Schuyler Co Family
    2. Bookout
    3. Howdy Folks! I just subscribed to the Schuyler County list, and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Meg Gentry Bookout, and I descend from two families that were in Schuyler Co pretty early-Hollingsworth and Reno. My 5th g-grandfather was Abraham Hollingsworth, who died near Rushville in December 1837. His son Avenant Hollingsworth married Mary (Polly) Reno in IL in 1822, the daughter of Jonathon Reno, who had come to Schuyler Co from TN really early-his daughter Louisa was born there in 1826. Jonathon was a wandering kinda guy, he lived all over the place, finally meeting his maker in Springfield MO in 1838. He was stabbed to death, helping a merchant "clear out" some rowdies from the store. He was 57 at the time, so he must have been one tough dude! One of Avenant's brothers, Gabriel, stayed in Schuyler Co and supposedly helped build the Jail that is now the Jail Museum. Haven't found out if this is true or not. The Hollingsworth family has also passed down Lincoln stories, which I am sure EVERY family has <grin>. A couple of Hollingsworths DID serve in the Blackhawk Wars at the same time and same place as Abraham Lincoln, so maybe the stories are based in truth. Anyway, that's my introduction-I'd love to hear some other Schuyler County stories! Meg in CA

    3. Sara and all, > But the cost of hiring someone will stop that type of job from becoming > reality. Yeah, unfortunately, that is true. Even if the volume were such that a courthouse could hire a person to handle the load, before doing that they would probably just say "no more". Copying for genealogists is really a courtesy, isn't it?. Someplaces you have to state why and which relation you are in order to get copies - and only if they deem it necessary. We _are really fortunate to have such wonderful, understanding people who work at the Schuyler courthouse. I've only gotten copies when its absolutely necessary, because most of the original books have been filmed by the LDS and can be ordered from a family history center. When I lived in Idaho, that's where I got most of my documentation. Never in my wildest dreams did I really believe I would someday live nearby! Ain't life great! Robin

    3. Wouldn't it be great. But the cost of hiring someone will stop that type of job from becoming reality. How about a volunteer group who would do the task? They could request a small fee for the expenses of running the group. The people at the Schuyler County Courthouse are a great bunch of people. Some of them have family who volunteer at the Historical Society. You don't find that at most courthouses. I could name a several where they treat you as their worse nightmare. Over the years, some of the people that the Schuyler Courthouse have become almost like friends. I've never wrote them with a request, always have went when I was there. The first day I'm there I go to the courthouse and let them know what I want and let them copying it at their own time, not while I'm standing there. Pay for the copying or at least leave money for what we think it will cost, then leave telling them when I'll check back -- next day or later. On the last day I can pick the copies up, I go and get what is done. One time, my sister and I had pick out about 30 full probates we wanted copied. They couldn't have possibly have copied them in the time we were in Rushville. We left money for the copying and postage. They copied and mailed us the probates and even wrote us that we hadn't left enough many. It took 2 months. Even through copying is part of their job, it's low on the list of what has to be done. Remember "Courtesy" -- "Patience" -- "Understanding" -- of other's circumstances. Sara

    3. Dixie and all, I've been giving this alot of thought of late. Last week, I went to the Rushville courthouse to get copies of a few probates and found that the circuit court office is being renovated, and they wouldn't be able to get to the books for at least four months. Can you imagine the amount of requests from genealogists that will be builtup by that time? This got me to thinking that its too bad the county courthouses don't hire one person whose sole responsibility would be to gather archival material from all the different departments, make the copies, etc. I would assume that most departments (circuit court, recorders) are located in the same building, and that none of them have the archival material on the computer, but are in books. What I wouldn't give for a job like that! Robin On Fri, 13 Aug 1999, D. Dixie Davis wrote: > I've seen that many of you are having trouble getting genealogy data > from some of the court houses. 3. I've seen that many of you are having trouble getting genealogy data from some of the court houses. The following explanation may help you understand how difficult it is for some of them that work there, especially since the records are not on a computer. Sincerely, D. Dixie Davis Dixie - the river rat ++++++++++++++++ D. Dixie Davis, Hi! ----- here. :-) Mom took the 3 e-mails you sent concerning the Mason County Court House, Nancy Glick, and genealogical research to her office yesterday, and after careful thinking...they realized that 2 of those incidents mentioned in the e-mails took place in the office next to hers, the Circuit Clerk's Office...not in hers, the County Clerk's Office. Also, Mom said that her boss, the County Clerk, ---- --------, told them that genealogical research is not their top priority...well, obviously!...BECAUSE that is NOT what their job is to do...that is sort of a side-job-like-thing. ...and, in those e-mails where someone complained about time...and...talking on the phone and getting info....Mom's response was: "All of that information is in a book. We have many, many books here that would have to be gone through to find the info. Our info. is not on a computer system, possibly unlike other counties that have a computer-based database," where they can search for something while still on the phone and happily give them the info. they want. In my opinion, those people should be lucky that they get any assistance at all! They obviously are not intelligent enough to realize that the jobs of those in the County and Circuit Clerk's Offices are not jobs that deal with helping genealogy nuts! Mom says: "Our office is a staff of four (4) with our boss (5), and it used to be six (6), and that was in the past, when the office wasn't as busy with recording info. and we were not in charge of running animal control for the county. So, we have fewer people doing more work. ...and mom, working at the court house...is also a genealogy nut, and so she tries to meet the needs of other family researchers as time permits after her normal work duties. The workers in her office are busy preserving today's information that will be history tomorrow." Bye, bye now... :-) ++++++++++++++++

    3. Hello, My GGG grandmother Elizabeth (Grimes) DeGarmo left Randolph County, VA about 1837 with four young sons, and arrived in Illinois probably in 1838. Elizabeth purchased land on the McDonough/Schuyler County line, and spent her older years in Schuyler County. I have found her in the 1870 census living with a son, but she is not listed in the 1880 census, therefore, I'm estimating she died about 1874. One of the descendants of Elizabeth (Grimes) DeGarmo, Vada Sims feels Elizabeth was likely buried at the Prather (Guinea) Cemetery. Does anyone have an index to that cemetery? I would appreciate any assistance to locate when Elizabeth died, and where she is buried. Thanks. Bill DeGarmo

THey lived in these townships: Camden, Brooklyn and Bainbridge. I have found a possible relative in Brown County --- John B. INGRAM who might be the brother of John B.? Of the children of Uriah and Permelia, one was my ggrandmother, Louisa Etta "May" INGRAM, b abt 1879. She is the person I need to find. She was born in Plymouth (Hancock county?) IL. Since her mother died when she was only 7, I assume her grandparents (BOX) raised her? There is no 1890 census, so this makes it tough. I do know that her sister Susan never married, and lived with the BOX's until thier deaths in 1900-1901. They are both buried in the Thompson Cemetery near Littleton. Susan then moved to Grayson County Texas -- no more info known. My ggrandmother Etta "May" INGRAM married Thomas LONGWELL of Knox County IL in 1897 in Washington Co IOWA. They had one son, Charles LONGWELL in 1898 in either Maquon IL or Macomb IL or ?. I have not been able to find a birth record. They had a nasty divorce in 1900 in Knox County and May didn't show up in court to fight for custody of her son. She was never seen again. I did find a marriage record for C. H. WAGNER a potter, to a May INGRAM LONGWELL in 1903 in Monmouth, Warren County IL (not far from Knox County). But I've checked census records and city directories and have not found them again. If anyone has clues to any of the above families, I'd LOVE to share! I hope this stirs up something..... Valerie Boatkitten@aol.com
