Would anyone be able to give me suggestions as to how I might find what church a Rev. McClifford would have been affiliated with in 1863 in Springfield? I have a marriage record showing John Fogarty married Annie Tierney, 18 Feb. 1863 by Rev. McClifford, but no church. I suspect Catholic. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thank you Katie
Yes, I have a good web site for you. It is http://home.att.net/~Local_Catholic/ When you get there, scroll down to the world map and click on "United States" link. That will take you to a states page. Click on the "Illinois" link and that will take you to all the diocese and parishes of the state. Scroll to the Diocese of Springfield where you will find their web site and contact information. From there you can contact them about this. Ask them to check the "Official Catholic Directory" from the year you want (this is an annual publication of all parishes, priests, and religious at least for U.S. and Canada--I am not sure of the world). If this was a Catholic church in existence at that time with that celebrant, they can pinpoint the church and address, and be able to tell you if that church is still in existence. If it is no longer in existence, they can tell you where the records are located.
