    1. [ILSANGAM-L] Spring Creek Church (Spring Creek Settlement), 1826-1879.
    2. Robert L Webb
    3. I'm working on sketches of several early Baptist churches in Sangamon County. One of them is Spring Creek. It was supposed to be located about eight miles west of Springfield (1861 Springfield) and one mile north of the road to Jacksonville. I haven't been able to locate the precise spot or find a deed. Some of the early members, whose name was Kendall, later moved to the county where I now live (Hancock). William Kendall (1770-1845) is buried in Hancock Co., in the Providence cemetery, but was probably a charter member of Spring Creek church. I have the following names as members of Spring Creek Church: Brice W. Alsbury (joined in Nov. 1828, ordained as a minister by another church, later, I believe). Robert Bagby (already an ordained minister when he joined in about 1841 or 1842; he was also a member at one time of the church at Lincoln's New Salem. I have a sketch he wrote of himself not long before his death, and his obituary). Daniel Brundage, James A. Brundage, William H. Brundage. A. Burnett Thomas Burnett Nathan Butler George Davenport (1781-1845, came to Sangamon Co. in 1819). A. Foutch (this may be the one born in 1797, who was one of the commissioners at the time of the building of the courthouse, which became the Old State Capitol) Harmon Haggard Allen Hamilton William P. Hazlett John B. Hinman Tandy James (not sure of spelling - very difficult to read on my microfilm) Benjamin Kendall, Barzillia Kendall, John H. Kendall, William Kendall Jr., William Kendall Sr. J. Martin Stephen Pool J. F. Pyatt S. Ray, and T. Ray Lewis Robertson Elder J. H. Senter (also once a member of New Salem Baptist church at Lincoln's New Salem) David Simms Andrew Steele Reuben Underwood T. B. Wright Someone may be able to enlighten me about some of these folks. 3. On the 1874 Sangamon Atlas there is a church shown in Cartwright Twp. NE 1/4 of Sec 25. This is approx. 1 mile or so from Spring Creek and is about 2 miles north of Old Jacksonville Rd. From what I can make of it, it appears to be about eight miles west of Springfield (present day). I can't verify that this is the Baptist Church, perhaps someone else can? It is still on the 1914 Atlas, but not on present day Atlas. At 04:52 PM 02/17/2001 -0600, you wrote: > I'm working on sketches of several early Baptist churches in >Sangamon County.
