As part of a project on the "Long Nine", I would like to get copies of any obituaries that might have appeared in Springfield papers for these men and their wives. Because of their significance to the community, I believe that most would have appeared there, even if they died elsewhere. I have approximate dates of death for most, but can't travel to Springfield for the foreseeable future. If you are willing to look up obituaries in newspaper microfilms at any of the local libraries, please contact me off-list so that we can discuss expenses, etc. For those who don't know, the "Long Nine" were a group of legislators from Sangamon County that included Senators Archer G. Herndon and Job Fletcher and Representatives Abraham Lincoln, Ninian Wirt Edwards, John Dawson, Andrew McCormick, Dan Stone, William F. Elkin, and Robert L. Wilson. The name "The Long Nine" comes from the fact that these men averaged six feet in height and weighed over 200 pounds. Their efforts in the 1836-1838 legislative session were successful in moving the State capital from Vandalia to Springfield. Wilson DeCamp Vienna, VA
