I have only recently begun researching Sangamon Co., IL myself. But somehow I stumbled on this link to the Illinois State Archives. I found listed two references to a cousin of my great-grandfather. I found his marriage in 1870, and I found that he had been active in the US Civil War which lasted from 1861-1864. I suggest you do a little searching there--you might stumble on something. You might also inquire of the Illinois State Archives whether they will do some preliminary research for you. One researcher, a number of years ago, said they have a rather detailed card file, which now must be on computer. A suggestion also--I believe, but cannot be sure, that on the LDS website there may be a link to a Research Outline for Illinois and also for Missouri. A good reading may suggest some avenues for you to pursue. Just a suggestion from a researcher who doesn't know the answers but who tries to figure out what resources to use to try to find the answers.
