Hello all. I noticed that someone had mentioned they had been in Springfield several days this week doing research. Perhaps some of you do not know of the Sangamon County Genealogical Society which has been in existence since 1968. We have a security copy of the microfilms for birth (July 1860 to 1916) the early births up through 1916 are spotty as these records were not REQUIRED by law until 1916, marriages (1821 to 1925) and deaths (1878 to 1940) time period. Portions of these films have been indexed. Those indexes are listed on the publication page of the Sangamon County Roots web page _http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilsangam/scgs-pub.htm _ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilsangam/scgs-pub.htm ) . The records we have indexed to date include: births July 1860 to 1884, marriages 1821 to 1905 and deaths 1878-1890. This is an ongoing project that we would appreciate more local volunteers to help transcribe. These films may be viewed during open house events and on Tuesday nights when we are open since we only have the one copy of each microfilm and thus need to keep them at the society office. The film machines that we have, however, do not make printed copies so transcriptions need to be made when viewing the documents. We do not charge to view the documents in house. If someone wants our genealogist to do research on a specific name during a specific time period we currently charge $8.00 per request. We will be open Saturday September 16 from 9 am to 1 pm and on Tuesday September 19 and 26. Everyone is welcome to visit the society and learn more about their Sangamon County ancestors. Please email me personally at _Dbutton2@aol.com_ (mailto:Dbutton2@aol.com) if you would like to request a search of these records. We hope to see some of you Saturday.
