I am trying to discover the birthdate and birthplace of Ensign Jack Waldo Dempsey, USNR, who died at sea 16 Jan 1944 (missing in action in the Pacific theater). The NARA WWII online casualty index for Illinois shows his wife, Dorothy B. Dempsey, living at 1425 S. 5th in Springfield. Dorothy (my father's cousin) was born in 1923 and grew up in Springfield. Dorothy later remarried, and family members know little about her first husband, though they are under the impression that he was from Sangamon County. The 1920 and 1930 censuses show a number of boys named Jack Dempsey living in Illinois, but there is none in Sangamon County. How might I find out when and where Jack Dempsey was born? Guy I.
