Surnames: BALLARD BRADFORD STEIN WHITE Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/xg.2ADI/2857 Message Board Post: "BALLARD -- Serving The County" (Pulaski County, Missouri) "Pulaski County pioneer Bland N BALLARD came to these parts probably in the 1820's from Sangamon County, Illinois. He eventually became a very prosperous stockman and influential citizen of this county. His father, also named Bland N. BALLARD, is listed in the Pulaski County History Book, Vol. II, as being county sheriff from Jan.1, 1863, through Jan. 3. 1838. The elder BALLARD also served as a county court justice in 1858 before dying in 1861. He was also said to have been collector of the state legislature at one time. The younger Bland N. BALLARD (the subject of this article) enlisted in 1861 in 'Company A, under Col. STEIN,' in the Confederate Army. He served four years and took part in several engagements in the Civil War before being capture near fort Smith, Arkansasn, and transported to St. Louis for nine months in captivity. When he was paroled after the war, BALLARD returned to Pulaski County. BALLARD was married to Sarah WHITE in 1867. She preceeded him in death in 1878. This marriage produced fove children-- Maggie, Olive, Charles, Cora, and Sallie. He then married Elizabeth BRADFORD, a doughter of Neely BRADFORD, in 1879. Four children-- Lucy, Samuel, Neely, and Winnie-- resulted from this marriage. In 1888, Mr. BALLARD erected an expansive two-story frame residence at a cost of $800. It is likely the one in the photograph printed along side this article."
