Hi Marion - (and all) I live in Springfield, and do quite a bit of local & statewide research. Yesterday (Mon) I needed to do some lookups at the Univ of IL Springfield-campus IRAD (Regional Archives Depository) - - and while awaiting their grad-student intern to finish copying an 1851 probate case file for me, I looked through their original book of Sangamon Co Marriage Index (Brides) - Your Fern E. Martin and Arthur F. Aber married in Sangamon County on July 17, 1912 In this original Bride's index - this marriage item gave both the marriage date AND that the license/record would be located in vol 9, pg 409. However - if one looked at the Marriage Index Books housed at the Sangamon Co Clerk's office, the marriage date would not be listed in those books... only a cert #; no date. They combined both their Brides and Grooms index books many years ago (that's why the UIS IRAD was able to obtain the original Brides book). Sangamon Co Clerk's office charges $12 for marriage license/return (certified only).
