Greets to all from Virginia! I'm new to the list and am researching the LAYMAN family who lived in Springfield, IL but were originally from Warren County, Ohio. Can anyone tell me if there are directories for the city of Springfield in the years 1870 and after? If so, can SKS check out this name, Jesse Layman or his wife, Elizabeth Clendenin Layman? Are there any death/cemetery indices for Springfield? This is the scant information I have on Jesse Layman and his family. He was listed in the 1870 census for the city of Springfield, Sangamon County, taken on 3 August 1870 on page 282: Jessie LAYMAN, age 56, white, male, born Ohio (head of household) Occupation given as laborer. (year of birth about 1814) Elizabeth Layman, wife, age 48 white, female, born Ohio (year of birth 1822) Jennie Layman, daughter, age 21 white, female, born Ohio (year of birth about 1849) Robert Layman, son, age 17, white male, born Ohio (year of birth about 1853) Frank Layman, son, age 12, white male, born Ohio (year of birth about 1858) I dont know the location in the city of Springfield where the 1870 census was taken---for the categories, Dwelling house, numbered in order of visitation, 2118, and Families numbered in order of visitation, 2001. The Asst Marshall" appears to be Wm. P. Emery. Is there information on where/which part of the city of Springfield he conducted his enumeration in 1870? I believe the Laymans may have been in Sangamon County as early as 1856. Per 1867 estate of Samuel Clendinen in Warren County, Ohio"Elizabeth Layman, wife of Jesse Layman, residing in Springfield, IL was to receive a one-eighth portion of her fathers estate." Jesse Layman and Elizabeth CLENDENIN were married on 8 December 1847 in Warren County, Ohio. Elizabeth Clendenin Layman was born supposedly on 26 April 1822. The family was Presbyterian. Jesse/Elizabeth Layman were on the 1850 Miami County, Ohio census and sold land in Miami County, Ohio in 1856. Does anyone know this family? I would love to trade info. I have plenty on Elizabeth CLENDENIN Layman's family. Appreciatively, Mary Louise Townsend Potomac Falls, VA
