Cheryl You are so good to post for your county. I need an obit, very recent, Phillip Schickedanz who died June 16, 2006. He is a cousin I recently found and did not get to contact. Thanks so much. He was a judge. Could someone do me a favor and look up the first name of a male Scroggins, died 13 June 1969, buried in Auburn Cemetery? His wife, Mary, died 16 August 1971 and is also buried there. Bill Scroggin

An excellent idea, Lee Anne, one I followed through on several years ago. As County Corodinator of Jersey County at the time, I asked for and received all the death records they had for Jersey, which entailed many legal size pages that were mailed to me. After I typed and put them online, I copied them, made a book and donated to IRAD so others would have access to the information instantly. IRAD interns are great and I consider them the #1 place to go for research if they have the records in the Archives that you need. Just check their holdings for the county in question. In fact, Dan Dixon, the President of the Sangamon County Genealogical Society was once an intern at IRAD and was a great help to me many times. The new Lincoln Library has a very nice genealogy room. Upstairs is the microfilm section for old newspapers Kent

The real estate books in IRAD are large, way to large for normal scanners. A digital camera might work, but would likely take multiple shots of each page to get one page and then stitch them together.. The media lab is just outside the IRAD room and may be able to provide advice. You have to be very careful. The materials are very fragile. Since most of the details are already abstracted, someone would need to prepare some index to the media that cross-references the existing index. It would be great if someone contacted the people at IRAD and worked out the details. If people can transcribe the materials that is also helpful. The old style writing is sometimes difficult to read. Having it transcribed and made available on the Internet would be helpful for many people. This takes time. Again if someone is interested, I'm sure the folks at IRAD would love to hear from you. Dave Hunter

They have him listed as being born in Germany. I have found Alvin and his children. Most were born in KS and OK. He then went to CA. His mother also ended up in CA, but not the same area. He comes in on my England line. Elisha England from Goochland, VA was my GGGGGF. He was William & Elizabeth Fairies England's son. He left VA and ended up in Monroe Co., KY. Any info will help. Thanks
That's a great question Lee Anne. Here's the answer for the material in the Presidential Library. Yes BUT. Some researchers took their cameras and began taking pictures of documents. A VERY IMPORTANT WOMAN came and screamed at them, made them stop. She said they were going to sell them or some such nonsense. Since she knew everything there was no reasoning with her and the researchers left. Several letters of complaint were issued and supposedly the issue was resolved. I haven't heard more. As to IRAD, in theory you cannot go into the storage area. An intern will go get the materials for you and, I think, make the copies. I suspect they would let you take a picture but I don't think they'd let you scan it. Some of those documents are incredibly old. I have copies of some from 1827. The Archives in general seem to be staffed by people who really want to preserve our records so they would likely be open to donated digital files. They are also open to transcriptions but they want a whole document transcribed, not just bits and pieces. You don't actually have to go to IRAD in Springfield. You can call them up and have them see if they have something for you. If so they will mail it to you. They have a lot of other county records including pre 1839 Logan County which is what I've obtained from them. Start here: http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/irad/iradholdings.html Be sure to read all the way down the page so you'll know how to order. As IRADs go, the one in Springfield is pretty good. They seem to get the best interns. Cheryl Rothwell
Are people able to bring digial cameras or scanners in while they research? If so, wouldn't it be great if anytime someone scanned the material for his or her personal use, he/she donated a copy of he digital file to the Univ. of IL, Springfield? Lee Anne
I'm researching the surname PERKINTON. Has anyone come across that name anywhere ? I do know that a branch of my family moved to Illinois about 80 years ago. IRAD at the University of IL at Springfield has original property record books going way way back (early 1830s I think). They have some old court records also. They have early probate records. These have all sorts of good information in them - sometimes medical bills, property (real and personal) distribution, auctions, etc. These can tell you not only who descendants are but sometimes they bring out relationships that are not necessarily obvious, by someone getting more than some one else. They also have the guide books for these that have been published by the genealogical societies so you can find the reference then look up the original. Most of this is Sangamon County, but I've seen some records for other places as well. I haven't been there for a while but they were only open 9 to 5 Mon thru Friday. Much of this information is in original books or originals are in files. The information desperately needs to be imaged and transcribed to preserve it for future generations. Much of it is crumbling when touched. Dave Hunter
I am trying to find out the gravestone inscription for Samuel Vancil who was buried in Wimmer Cemetery in Auburn Township. Looking especially for a birth year for him. Hope that someone with an Auburn Township Cemeteries book can do a quick lookup. (I tried to buy the book but was told it was out of print.) Thanks kindly, Dwayne Wrightsman Lee, NH

If your looking for Sangamon and sorrounding counties, you can also check out the IRAD office at University of Illinois, Springfield. I haven't been there but they should also have a fair amount of local records submitted to the State for archiving - such as marriage, taxes, etc. (for this region of the state).
