Hi Marilyn, Nope. No writing on the back. I wish we had known about these family photos years ago before the latest generation passed on. One thing I've learned from this is identify all my photos I take now. I may know who they are or when/where they were taken, but 100 years from now..... well....... Don't give up on not having any old family photos. I had been told for years there were none of our Lofy's, Graeff's, Salmon's, etc and figured I'd never know what they looked like. That's what this box was full of. If I ever do figure anything out about the photo I'll let you all know. Patty >Do any of the pictures have names on the back? Since I and my family are >orginally from Spfld., I would be interested in knowing. Hi: Just this afternoon returned from Springfield and looked at my mail. That is a WONDERFUL photo - wish I knew what my ancestors looked like back then to identify them in the picture! At first I thought it was taken in the State House, but with all the brick walls and 'road' decided it could be the Abe Lincoln train depot. You can see the brick walls and in front of the first row of folks there is brick. The posts and intricate detail on them, reminds me of the depot. Sure wish I had seen this before I went up there, I'd have checked it out! haha. Sorry. I'm sure someone there in Spfld. could drive down-town and check the depot out - altho' the brick platform was concreted probably about 40-50 yrs. ago. Do any of the pictures have names on the back? Since I and my family are orginally from Spfld., I would be interested in knowing. As I said, I don't have many pictures of them so wouldn't know them if I saw them! Your "pay-load" sounds great! Good luck Marilyn - Clearwater, Fl Walter Gaddis wrote: > . One of the photos is a large > photo of what seems to be some sort of town event. I am looking for information on Heinrich Herman YOUNG family. He was married to "Jetty" LUNING of Warren County, Missouri on March 2, 1893 in Menard County,Illinois. They had at least four children, Walter Adolph, Otto B., Emma, and Loren Edward. I believe they belong to the Catholic Church in Petersburg. They may have lived around Lincoln, Logan County, Illinois area. Any information will be appreciated. Spelling of names may vary Thanks in advance Jackie
I am researching the Whitman family name. Any information would be greatly appreciated. My greatgrandmother, Emma J. Whitman married Jeremiah Nichols and they lived in the Springfield area in the late 1870's. Emma ( Jane E. on some records) was the daughter of Margaret Whitman, but I have not located her father - name unknown at this time. Thank you for your time. Phyllis M. Posted on: Sangamon County, Il Query Forum Board URL: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Sangamon?read=1580 Surname: Berry, Johnson, Lytle ------------------------- I am trying to discover if the Margaret Berry who married Thomas Johnson in Sangamon Co., Ill on 9-9-1828 could possibly be my grandparents. All I have is that Thomas Johnson was born in Ill. and his wife was named Margaret. Their son ALONZO DECALVIS JOHNSON was my great-great grandfather and he married MARY ELIZABETH LYTLE, in Missouri in 1883. Alonzo was born in Decatur, Ill. 4-2-1856/57. Have you discovered any further info about your Berry? Thank You. Helen
Greetings, Before you two guys leave the subject of HUMPHREY, I would like to add my two cents worth. My great great grandmother was Ellen Abigale Delitha Jane Humphrey. She died in 1938. That's all I have on her, except that my grandmother was born in 1884 or 1885 in Barclay, Sangamon, Illinois. That would put Ellen's birthdate at about 1865 or so. It doesn't appear that we have a connection from what I have seen posted between you, but, on the chance that I missed something, I wanted to mention it. She was certainly in the right area, anyway. Tim Hogan, denver.
No, there are only the seven people listed in the previous message: Henry Van Meter, Surgeon; John F. King, Lt. Col; O. H. Abel, Adjutant; G.W. Judy, Col.; G.W. Mourer, Q.M.; J.M. McLane, Major; A.S. French, Asst. Surgeon. It is a formal portrait of those seven people with "Field and staff of the 114th Ill. Inf." hand written above the photo. The names are hand written below the photo. Henry Van Meter began as the Asst. Surgeon and was promoted to Surgeon on 8 Dec 1863; the group was mustered out in 1865. therefore, the photo was taken 1863-65. I may have misinterpreted some of the initials on the names because it is in very fancy writing. V. Hi Patty, it looks like the late 1800/early 1900, from the dress. I noted that all, or most of the men are wearing some sort of ribbon on the upper left of their jackets. Not many children or young people (on the left hand side). No idea the location but maybe it's a company gathering, or a club/organization/church gathering. Maybe the men were all given some sort of award (I noted that at least one guy, in the front row, was wearing what looked like some sort of medal in addition to the ribbon mentioned above). With the lack of children, I'd don't think it is a family picture; there would certainly be lots of young ones visible. What time period did men where the bowler hat? What type of men wore them? For example, at one time in London, only those who worked in the financial district wore black suits with bowler hats. What type of women could afford to wear hats like the ones shown? Whelp, that's my two-cents worth. Neat picture though. Paul
I don't have any idea. I'm not too experienced in telling the age of photos from the dress of the people. I was hoping someone on the list might be able to tell us. Patty At 10:59 PM 7/5/00 -0500, you wrote: >Do you have any idea what year this was taken? >-- >Carol Papke >carol@papkeville.com

Years ago, my grandmother gave me a photograph of her grandfather, Henry Van Meter. The photo is of the "Field and Staff of the 114th Ill. Inf." during the Civil War. According to ILLINOIS AT VICKSBURG by Charles Koch, 1908, that infantry division was made up of men mostly from Sangamon, Cass and Menard counties. The photo was taken between 1863 and 1865. The others shown in the photo include the following: Lt. Col. John F. King, Adjutant O.H. Abel, Col. G. W. Judy, Q.M. G. W. Mourer, Major J. M. McLane and Asst. Surg. A. S. French. I may have misread some of the initials--the name of the unit and names of officers & staff are hand written in fancy lettering on the border of the photo. Are there any descendants of these officers on the list? V. Sheffler s066@fullnet.net
Hi all, Sorry about the problems earlier. The photo is now viewable at <http://people.ne.mediaone.net/wgaddis/springfield.htm>. I had forgotten to upload the photo with it and every time I checked it hadn't noticed my computer was finding it on my hard drive instead of on the server. Guess I enjoyed my vacation too much! Anyway, if anyone can help identify any of the people in the photo or where/when/what for the photo was taken it would be much appreciated. Thanks, Patty
