Posted on: Sangamon County, Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Sangamon/1718 Surname: COLBURN ------------------------- PAUL COLBURN was born approx. 1761 in Hollis, Hillsborough County, NH. He and his wife (MEHETIBEL BALL) had 11 children born in Sterling, Worcester County, MA. In about 1815, PAUL COLBURN, his wife and some of their children left to go west. They arrived in Morgan County, IL approx. March 1821 in what is now Loami. Children who accompanied him to IL were SALLY, MARY, ISABEL, ISAAC, WILLIAM, EBENEZER, and ABEL. William had a son EBENEZER born April 9, 1833 in Sangamon County, IL. This EBENEZER married Nancy A. Huffmaster. ABEL COLBURN married DEBORAH PHELPS July 1794. They had nine children, JOSEPH, ELVIRA, ISABEL, IRA, ASHSA P. (who married JOHN P. DAVIS), LUTHER, NATHAN, MELINDA, and EMELINE. I am descended from PAUL'S son EBENEZER. EBENEZER married JULIA SMITH. They had seven children, ADNA P., WILLIAM, CHARLOTTE, MARIA, MARY P., BURFITT G., and ELLEN. BURFITT G. married LUCINDA LARGE. They had several children, one of whom, JONER (who married Frankie Myra Langley), is my great-grandfather. I am quite interested in finding any information I can pertaining to BURFITT G. I know he died sometime between 1870 and 1880. I am also very curious about his name.

    2. JoAnn--Did you notice that message sent about Greenberry and his son Sterling came to Illinois with PATRICK CROWDER from KY? Have you come across any Crowders during your research? I haven't. How are you? and how was the Reunion? I'm still plugging along slowly and still have my same brick walls. So I placate myself by doing Scrapbooking. I started 2 years ago so I could make a Family Album and in those 2 years have done 3 Retirement Albums and am just finishing my 3rd Wedding Album while keeping up with Albums about our retirement here in Alabama. As soon as this Wedding Album is finished I AM GOING TO TRY A FAMILY HERITAGE ALBUM. my best TO YOU MARY WITTLOCK

    2. Jane, If you write to the Lincoln Library at 326 S. 7th St., Springfield, Il. 62701 and ask then to look for an obit for you they will send you what they find. The obits have to be during this time frame though: 1861 - 1934 and 1960 to the present. They have been very helpful to me and I didn't have to wait that long. I also have never had to pay for a copy of an obituary. Hope this helps you. Connie

I have a gap with GREENBERRY DONNER. I have not proved his birthplace or parentage but know he died in Menard in 1864 leaving minor children who a L. D. Cox accepted their guardianship. One minor was STERLING DONNER and his daughter MYRTLE PEARL DONNER married into my husbands line of ancestors. Others have suggested that I chalk up GREENBERRY'S parents as that of TOBIAS DONNER who was brother of George & Jacob Do you have anything on GREENBERRY DONNER

    2. Steve--I have been collecting Donner info for several years. The only thing that I have not proven is Greenberry Donners birthplace and parentage. I know he married in Indiana to a Nancy Bettis and eventually ended up in Menard. When he died 1864 his minor children were under the guardianship of an L.D.Cox. One of these children was STERLING DONNER and his daughter MYRTLE PEARL DONNER married into my husbands ancestors. Over the years I've been told to chalk up GREENBERRY DONNER as the son of TOBIAS who of course is GEORGE'S brother along with JACOB DONNER. do you have any info on this family Mary L. Wittlock

    2. Lincoln Library is the Springfield Public Library. They have quite a collection of historical books on IL in general in the general collection and Sangamon County and other Central IL counties in the Sangamon Valley Room on the 3rd floor. They also have tons of obituaries. For books you may also want to check out the STate Historical Library which is located underneath the Old State Capitol building downtown. They have many, many resources. Dave Hunter
