Anyone know where I can obtain or see copies of Springfield city directories from the 1850 to 1880 era? Will I have to visit Springfield? Thanks for any advice. Scott Roth Glendale, Wisconsin
Posted on: Sangamon County, Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Sangamon/1787 Surname: Farley ------------------------- I am looking for a James Farley who married and died in Sangamon County, Illinois. James was born in Dublin, Ireland on May 14, 1845. He married Maretha Anne Mann. His date of death is unknown but reportedly took place in the town of Riverton. According to data I have recovered, the James in my own family was more likely born in 1843 or 1844 (so the year in the other date I found might be off). He was born about 20 miles from Dublin, Ireland in County Meath. His parents brought him and three siblings to Morgan County, Illinois to the town of Meredosia, about 40 or 50 miles from Riverton. Later, the family moved to Stephenson County, IL. However, records show that James and his brother, Patrick both served in the Civil War in the early 1860's. And, as soon as Patrick got out, he moved to Morgan County to do farm work for a year. The thought occurs to me that James might have done the same thing, and might have met a girl in neighboring Sangamon County, whom he married on May 11, 1872. Basically, the James in Sangamon seems to be a close match to the one in my family (whom we lost track of after 1872). All we know is that when the rest of the Farley's moved to Dakota Territory in the 1870's, James did not come along. This historic house, located at 924 S. 6th Street, is included in Dr. F. S. Barringer's "Historic Homes of Springfield," published in 1966. I believe it is out of print. The notation reads: "This house, retaining so much of the grandeur of early Springfield, was built in 1867. The builder was Wm. A. Turney, who was born in Galena in 1832, married Maria Warren, and came to Springfield as a young man. Turney was an attorney and became clerk of the Supreme Court. The Springfield Director of 1869 records -- "Turney, William A., Clerk of the Supreme Court, 6th between Cass & Clay Streets." "In his early years as an attorney, Turney spent sometime in New Orleans obtaining right of way for the Illinois Central RR. It was shortly after this that he built this house, and the effect of this trip to the deep south is immediately obvious in the architecture of his home. The beautiful iron grill work of the balconies was brought heere from the south, and the design and trim of the windows with their inside shutters suggest the French influence of New Orleans. "The house was one of the finest of Springfield at that time and became a center of the social life of the community. Mr. Turney died in 1875 and his wife in 1899. The home was left to two daughters, Annie, who married Thomas Baird, and Maude, who married James A. Kimber. The two daughters and their families then occupied the house jointly, and Mrs. Kimber in later years told of the many gay parties and soirees of those early days. Mrs. Baird died here in 1931 and Mrs. Kimber lived here til her death in 1945. William Kimber, son of Mrs. James Kimber, still resides in Springfield. "In 1921, the large central stairway was removed and the interior altered so that the home could be converted into four apartments. In 1945 the house was sold to Wm. Frasco of Riverton. Mrs. Grace Potter, widow of James Arthur Baird, son of Annie Baird, still lives in the grand old mansion. "The house interior still retains much of its original grandeur despite the modification of the 16 rooms. In the front room of Mrs Potter's apartment are large oil paintings of Wm. and Maria Turney, both handsome and aristocratic personages. The ceilings of the rooms are quite high and the wood trim ornate. The furniture which is victorian or mid-19th century, includes marble top tables, handsome mirrors, and a beautiful old ship's desk. "The entire house, both exterior and interior, still breathes the life of one hundred years ago. We pray the house will not be torn down and may be left to live on, a memorial to a chivalrous past." The book includes a 1966 photo, as well as an earlier one "from the collection of the late Mrs. James A. Kimber." It does not mention a John Turney, and lists only the two daughters. Some of the dates don't match those in your query. Hope this answers some of your questions. D. M. Ross

Posted on: Sangamon County, Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Il/Sangamon/1785 Surname: Turney ------------------------- does anyone know about a Turney house in Springfield, Illinois? According to the Galena Foundation brochure on John Turney, a Galena lawyer, it stated a mansion-type home in Springfield was built by the Turney family around 1835, that in 1974 it was still standing (with Potters living there?) and that the house was mentioned in "Historic Homes of Springfield, Illinois" Does any one know of the house or the historic homes book? Or about the John Turney family? His wife was an Arnett, his son William lived in Springfield, in 1870s he brought his father's body from Galena to Springfield for re-burial near Lincoln. Any help appreciated. Mary hlm@qtm.net

Posted on: Sangamon County, Il Query Forum Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/USA/Il/Sangamon/1779 Surname: KEIRS, BURKE ------------------------- Looking for information on the KEIRS family, namely the family of Robert William KEIRS, m.Elizabeth. They came from Scotland about 1881 and he was a coal miner. In 1924 they lived with their daughter Margaret. Other children included Robert, Bessie, John, Annie and William. One of these married or was at least with Oveta BURKE and had a son named Robert Wiliam KEIRS. I am trying to find out who that missing person is and any other information concerning Robert William and Elizabeth's decendents. Am willing to trade decendent information if I can find the son who was with Oveta BURKE.
Hello, I was hoping someone could look up information for me in the 1870 census. I am looking for James Thomas Brown and his wife Margaret (Leamon) Brown. James was born about 1826 in Springfield, Sangamon County, IL to Delos White and Ruth Ann (Morgan) Brown. I show him in the 1850 census for Sangamon County at Dwelling/Family 1433/1433 with his wife and three children. His father Delos White killed a man in a Springfield coffee house October 3, 1853 and he was bound over to the Circuit Court on a charge of manslaughter. Delos jumped bail and his property was sold to discharge his recognizance. Delos, his wife and sons, James Thomas and Jacob Jones left Illinois. I show that Delos and James Thomas were in Sidney, Fremont County, IA in the 1860 census. Delos died 25, Sep 1863 and is buried in the Sidney Cemetery. There is no record of his wife's death in Fremont County, IA. James Thomas was not in Iowa in 1870 and neither was his mother, Ruth Ann (Morgan) Brown. I suspect they went back to Sangamon County, IL. One of James' sons did stay and marry in Fremont County, IA. James' younger brother Jacob Jones married Nancy Martin there and stayed in Fremont County, IA and raised 9 children. Since his father, Delos, was deceased I'm sure James felt he could go back to Sangamon County with his mother and family. Most of the family is buried in the Morgan Cemetery so if anyone has the resouces to see if James Thomas, Margaret, or Ruth Brown are buried their I would appreciate the information also. By the way, James and Margaret were married in Sangamon County, IL June 19, 1845. I hope you can make sense of my ramblings. Thank you for your help, Sincerely, Charlene Swan Kes6135@aol.com

Yes, IRAD has death records (probably in ledger form) for Springfield from 1886 to 1918, and Sangamon county probably has them as well. IRAD charges minimum of $1.00 for first 10 pages; $0.10 each afterwards (I think). You can write to the county, too: Sangamon County Clerk, 200 S. 9th Street, Room 101-County Building, Springfield, IL 62701. They charge $12.00 per record, and no personal checks are accepted (certified or money order only).
