    2. I have read the Life on Sugar Creek book. It was great. I grew up near that area. The townships in Sangamon Co. were not formed until much later than you are talking of, so who knows what they called Island Grove in the 1820's. When the townships were formed Island Grove TWP was larger than it is now and also contained what is New Berlin TWP. Margarette

    3. Margarette, There may be a way to identify the exact location of some of these extremely early churches like Island Grove, but the only way I have thought of so far is to identify where the people lived who were members. In the case of Island Grove, we don't know the name of a single person who was a member of the church before it dissolved in 1828. There may be a clue in some of the oldest church minutes of its sister churches if we look hard enough. I just wanted to point out to you that there was an Island Grove church which was born and died before the one you mentioned. There was a lot of upheaval among the Baptists in this area at this early date over the mission system. The final decision was made in 1832 in a session of the Sangamon Association held at the New Salem Church at Lincoln's New Salem. We have the minutes of 1823 (partial), 1828, 1830, 1831, and 1832 and most years thereafter. We do not know even where the Association convened in the years 1824, 1825 and 1827. We know it was held at Lick Creek in 1823 and again in 1826. Robert Webb On Thu, 23 Nov 2000 11:07:47 EST MaggeD@aol.com writes: > I have read the Life on Sugar Creek book. It was great. 3. Sally, I do find a Matthew P Crowder and Jane Crowder as members of Salem Sugar Creek church (we have a copy of the records of this church), which was organized in 1830, in the vicinity of the State Police Headquarters near Lake Springfield (I think I can point to the exact spot where the church once stood). 3. Margarette, In a book I have called Life on Sugar Creek, there is a map which shows Island Grove as a settlement west of Springfield near Spring Creek, north of Lick Creek. It may well be far enough west to match the location you describe. However, I believe Island Grove Church was organized in about 1824. The first Baptist church in the county was called Sangamo, which was organized in 1820, and joined the Illinois Association that year. A church called Lick Creek was organized in about 1822-23. A church called Springfield (not in the city, however, but on the bank of Howell's Spring Branch near what is now New City - southeast of Springfield) was organized in about 1824, and also Island Grove. A church called Sugar Creek was also organized in about 1824. In 1826, a church called Spring Creek was organized west of Springfield. The minutes of the Sangamon Association for 1828 record the fact that Island Grove Church is desolved in fellowship. Minutes of Union church in Morgan Co. reveal that Island Grove church had requested help from them to settle a difficulty in May 1827. The Island Grove Church at Berlin was organized in 1833, according to the history of the Springfield (Missionary) Baptist association, and was a "Friends to Humanity" church - meaning it was organized by Baptists who had divided over being willing to fellowship their Baptists forebears in Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia, who had slaves. It was a different church than the one I was referring to. John Crowder was a member of the "Springfield" church in Cotton HIll township, near New City, before 1830. He was one of the founding members of the Springfield church in August 1830, which was a Primitive Baptist church originally and bought property at the present site of the Central Baptist Church near downtown Springfield, in 1834. Elder Aaron Vandeveer was the first pastor, and he was a staunch Primitive Baptist. The church grew to 80 members under his care, but was then influenced to turn to the mission system when the division arose. I noticed in the history of the Springfield Association that they refer to the Sangamon Association as a small body of five or six small churches. But the fact is that the Sangamon Association had 39 churches and 1100 members in 1830, and during the remainder of the 19th century it had between 15 and 20 churches all the time. I haven't found anything on Philip Crowder yet, but will keep my eyes open. 2. I think the Baptist Church that was in Island Grove was later moved to New Berlin. I have tried to find out about that church myself as I think it is possible that some of my ancestors could have been members. I cannot find any information on it at all. Island Grove is a TWP but the town of Berlin called "Old" Berlin may have been called Island Grove earlier on. I believe the church in New Berlin is Missionary Baptist though but it may have been Primitive Baptist originally. I thought I had some notes on this but haven't been able to locate them. 3. Mac, I would like to know the answer to this also. I "think" Island Grove was a small settlement, probably in Island Grove township, and my notes say it was near Spring Creek. There was a Baptist church established there sometime between 1823 and 1828, called Island Grove church. My research has turned up some other early settlements which may not have ever developed into towns but rather (like Lincoln's New Salem) disappeared from the map. One was McKinney's settlement. I have NO idea where it was located. By the way, the Baptist church at Lincoln's New Salem is part of my research, as it was identified throughout its history with the Hardshell Baptists, as they are sometimes called. Not too long ago I was over there, and mentioned to one of the guides who that I was a minister of that faith. He told me to go over to the Blacksmith's home, as he kept the Hardshell preachers overnight in his home. When I went over there, several of the women dressed in clothing of that day started talking with me. One took me inside and started questioning me about our beliefs. I heard a couple others come up to the log building outside and ask, Did you know there is a Hardshell baptist preacher here? The lady I was talking to heard her, and spoke up and said, "We are in here hardshelling right now." Ha. 2. Thank You very much Elder Webb. Ishaim Caudle was born April 22, 1804 and died May 3, 1891. His son Ishaim Wesley was born November 27, 1850 and died around 1949. I am trying to find out if Ishaim Wesley was married at that time and if so, who were his family members. We know he had two children, Ross born about 09-1880 and Grace born last of 1881 or around January 1882. I am unable to find any information on Grace, where she was born, baptized etc. Unfortunately I have no information on Primitve Baptist Church. I found out that he was a member of the church on his obituary notice in the paper. Thank you for your help. Avie

    2. Robert, I am interested in the Primitive Baptist Church members. My great grandparents Ishaim (Isom or Isham) Caudle and his son Ishaim Wesley Caudle were members of the Primitive Baptish Church. They lived in Illinois, around Wayne and Lawrence Counties. Would you check and see if you find them in your list. It is greatly appreciated. Avie

    3. Avie, I recognize the name of Isham Caudle as being a Primitive Baptist, and will let you know for sure, after I get back from some seminars the next two days, and have a chance to look at my database, and see what church he was a member of, or his son. Meanwhile, do you know the year of their birth and death? Thanks for writing. If you have any data that relates to the PBC history, feel free to let me know, as I need all the help I can get in a project like I am working on.
